Filson Mackinaw Wool Work Jacket: alnk.to/5ji1bpV
When looking for the best men's wool jacket you usually end up ending on two brands...WeatherWool and Filson. Filson has a ton of legendary pieces: The Filson Mackinaw Cruiser, the Packer Coat, the Work Jacket, and even their tin cloth line is all the rage. Not too mention the briefcase. However, there is someone else on the block! Some new shawty lookin for trouble...and that's Ralph and WeatherWool. What makes WeatherWool different? Why are people obsessed with the anorak? What is the deal with the lynx pattern and a jacquard loom? Is the wool that much better? Should I do a waterproof test? Or a windproof test next? To be honest I could make this video an hour long but I had to be brief!

The Iron Snail is a men’s fashion vlog starring a young man named Michael and featuring a snail no bigger than a quarter. The two are set on taking over the world of fashion by creating a clothing line to end all clothing lines. Until then, we’re here to tell you EVERYTHING you need to know about the best clothing out there, from the highest quality raw denim jeans to the warmest jacket to the sturdiest boots…the Iron Snail has got you covered. Heyo! There are TWO active definitions of virgin wool! I’m going off WeatherWool’s blog but there is also another:
“Virgin wool is the wool taken from a lamb's first shearing. This first lot of wool from a lamb is the finest and softest wool taken from a sheep during its life. Or it is wool that has not been processed or woven. Basically any wool that has not been recycled”
I liked it better when it was from sheep that hadn't had sex. Jajajajajajajajajajaja hahahahaha jajajajajajajajajajaja
@@NikonFM2n bro I probably shouldn't but I like that comment ☺️
This is the answer
THANKS for the review Mike! We appreciate all the work and thought that has clearly gone into this effort. One point ... near the end you said KNIT but our Fabric of course is woven. I really appreciate your friendly and don't-take-me-too-seriously attitude. I also really appreciate that you, basically, live in double-time. Usually, videos go too slooooooowwwww for me! Thanks Again and All the Best --- Ralph
6 years ago I purchased a Filson Packer Coat for $495. Shortly after they discontinued the coat only for it to resurface with a flannel lining for quite a bit more money. It's now close to $1,000. I absolutely love this coat but think the latest management has totally messed with the company's product line. Discontinuing a lot of their heritage clothing in favor of more trendy items.
I own several Filson wool garmets: jackets, pants, hats, etc. and have enjoyed them very much. I also have two Weatherwool anoraks mid weight and heavy weight. The weatherwool fabric is superior in my opinion. It's much nicer to the touch and is more wind resistant. If anyone is on the fence go with WW hands down. Filson's quality is not what it once was and their pricing is almost as much as WW. Lastly, dealing with Ralph at WW is a joy. Their customer service is impeccable. Ralph has actually answered the phone everytime I've called! Nice video. Thanks for sharing
What weight weatherwool would you recommend? Worried I may overheat with the heavyweight if hiking around
Definitely the mic weight for hiking. You could always wear a merino wool garment under the mid weight if necessary. Good luck @@poolee77
I'm a medium in all filson garments but now finally looking to get into WW. Would you recommend going with a medium for them as well?
@@slickdanger_ What's your size? I find WW Anoraks and shirt jackets run large
@@mychaelpierce8049 i’m typically a large, but in Filson jackets I wear a medium so it seems medium would work for WW
Your videos are always so entertaining and equally educational what a concept!
The trick with Filson is just buying older second hand coats 😂 they’re still great and very rarely will you pay more than half price .. and I love the idea of wearing a 50 year old coat that still looks great
Michael, Weatherwool and FIlson both made a great Made in US Wool Coat-- But there are some other brands that I think you should consider in your quest for the greatest woolen coats. Those would be Bemidji Woolen Mills out of Bemidji, MN and Johnson Woolen Mills out of John, VT. While I've never had my hands on the Bemidji, the Johnson jackets are wondergully high quality-- albiet lined with tricot-- and both have been making the jackets in-house for a hundred years or more. Might be good jackets to test out- not sure if they're made with virgin wool or not.
JWM isn't using the tightest weave, and the wool has a lot of pilling.
I've had mine a year and really love it though, it's great for the money but not the highest quality wool out there.
Bemidji I'm not sure about, but they do offer a 30oz wool which nobody else does.
I no longer see their hooded Mackinaw hunting coat on their site though.
Also dehen has the N-1 which is waxes canvas with wool lining
Entertaining as always! I really like the Filson work jacket.
Thank you for your video. Thank you for your channel. Thank you for sharing this information with us. Keep up the hard work… Your hustle will not go unnoticed, and should bring you success.
when you were talking about the lynx pattern and how its a better weave, i was regretting getting the olive shirt jac instead of the lynx, but thankfully literally a second later you mentioned all the colors use the same weave/yarn. whoo. great job as always. my med weight shirt jac is warm and comfy af. happy holidays to you.
Mike, another great video. Happy holidays to you, sir!! ☺️👍🤓
I really like the editing style of your videos. You could compare two brands of paint drying and the way you deliver content would make it an interesting video to watch.
Just found your channel and love it keep up the good work and the funny quips 💛
Thank you for blessing us with this creative content man! I have been binging your channel for that heritage work wear. Any chance you can do a follow up on that noah sweater or just follow up on previous pieces? Love the content bud!
Love my weatherwool so much! Worth every penny. Ralph and family/team rock. I still love my lester river bushcraft jacket as well!
I have both as well. The Weatherwool outperforms the Lester River hands down. The Weatherwool is warmer, with less stuff underneath. It also blocks wind better. However, I like the organization of the kangaroo pocket on the Lester River better. I will wear my Lester River anywhere without a second thought. The Weatherwool is still just too dang nice to wear in the woods.
Luckily I live in the NYC area. I’ve visited Ralph at Weatherwool’s headquarters twice. Nice guy and so is his wife Debbie. I visited summer of 2021 when I bought my All around jacket and recently i. Fall of 2022 to discover the status of his peacoats which are currently in production. Bottom line is Filson couldn’t pour piss outta weatherwool’s boot with instructions on the heel.
amazing video!
Omg I watch Theo and Harris and was looking at a review for Weatherwool and found this, awesome!
you're a legend mate.
Filson has gone the way of many old companies. Either lowering quality, making nearly everything over seas, jacking the prices through the roof compared to their materials and quality level, or a combination of all three. Filson, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Levi's all 3 come to mind.
Obviously I'd do Weatherwool, or another small company.
Ok
or just get a vintage second hand jacket or coat from the three sellout brand you mentioned, ive got a vintage filson double mack and it is quality
a while back i researched unto this matter and came to filson but in the second hand market. I got an immaculate vintage 1980's filson double Mackinaw in green for £350. ive since seen the same coats in lesser conditions for in excess of £400-£1000 depending on pattern and condition, whether people will hit on these now for the price is another story but im glad i got mine when i did. imho it is the ultimate outdoor harshweather longlasting survival outer garment, if paired with a light waterproof poncho then theres no doubt in my mind it would probably last a lifetime of constant wear outside in the elements. functionality in design of pockets and with the cape for added thickness on shoulder chest and back is just well thought out. They simply dont make em like they used to..... that goes for most produced items nowadays dont it
Love my Filson Packer. My first dive into the brand, I know right what a first coat to start off haha. Worth the investment.
I like your hair. Looks awesome 😎
You should do a review on the work jacket
Great content
I own a Aran Sweater market sweater (100% Pure wool) and it’s itchy, it’d be cool to see you do a video on them!
I have returned to watching the good ole snail tale😎
Hey Mike I had to break out my Canadian tuxedo this past weekend here in Miami, it got chilly. The 501's have bachelors buttons I installed for the leather ended suspenders.
I have a Mackinaw Cruiser and went true to size and it’s kinda bulky but good for layering and still looks nice. I watched the @Stridewise and they made fun of him at the store when he wanted to size down. That cringe had an effect on my choice and I love it. Thanks for your videos. Loved the log joke.
Rose Anvil be crushing on you bro.
LOL I saw that. Good guys
Great content as usual. Btw your channel just got a well deserved whoa bundy from yt rose anvil 2!
Team Snail! Not sure where it went, but that Filson fleece lined wool work jacket looked like a nice deal when I saw one earlier this year. Lining is an interesting concept to explore.
exactly! nobody goes shopping for filson directly from their website😂
@@briantemplin9684 the thing with liners is youre getting wool for its excellent properties but then in some cases having deathcloth cotton flannel or plastic polyester on your body between you and the wool. Whenever ive seen vintage jackets with linings the outer made of wool is always near immaculate but the inner lining looks worn stained and off colour. obv wools self cleaning hypoallergenic etc etc but then the liners are the total opposite so your getting wool for longevity but the liners going to get ruined within like a year of constant use
That is not what virgin wool is. "Virgin" refers to the first shear or the sheep. The meaning you provided is an obsolete version from ww2 times when wool was in high demand and short supply to force manufacturers to recycle more.
Going off WeatherWool’s blog here! weatherwool.com/pages/the-science-of-wool
Seems like there are two active definitions - I’ll pin a comment!
The folks (Ranchers) we work with will say LAMBS WOOL or EWES WOOL. I don't think we've ever used LAMBS. Although I have not checked with other garment makers, I strongly doubt that all the folks saying VIRGIN WOOL mean LAMBS WOOL. Also, there are companies now featuring garments made from recycled wool (which was originally called SHODDY). --- Thanks --- Ralph
Often times wish my mild west coast winters were a little rougher so I had a better excuse to spend money on jackets like this.
What has been your daily driver for jackets/coats this winter? I picked up a navy peacoat a couple months back and its really nice but I find that Im always either too hot with too 2 layers or chilly with 1 layer.
Michael, we need to know - when is your wool jacket being revealed and when can I put in a pre-order? Weatherwool is the GOAT of fabrics and I’d love some in your design.
Interesting background for the review. Where is the track located? It appears to be well used, based on the shiny rail head.
Also Filson’s warranty is up there with the best in the world. That has to be taken into account for their prices. Now I’m going to check out weatherwool. Thanks for finding me something else to toss money at! Lol😂
They’re backed up. And also much, much more expensive, but go figure. Their wool is almost as soft a cashmere. They’ll be producing a lot more at end of 2023 and 2024 tho! Which is awesome
Idk about weather wool, but Filson does have a lifetime warranty, which is amazing and worth some of the extra mark up
A good idea for the anorak might be to add a gusset to the neck.
Hey Michael, how do you store your wool jackets and coats? plastic bag? with cedar?
I think comparing those two jackets is like comparing Rolex and Omega. Both are good but just in different ways.
I have the Heavier Filson hunting coat without the furry collar. A snap on one of the pockets was lost, and I really didn't give it much thought until I found out Filson will repair items like this that have not failed from abuse. The coat is currently with Filson, so we'll see how their warranty holds up when I get the coat back in a few weeks. Did they repair the snap or not? I'll let you know in a few weeks.
The people need to know! Was it repaired?
@4 minutes, i thought i heard “Rambo” wool, Damn!
I can tell that trying to do both T&H and running your own channel, not mention trying to set up your own business, is really having its toll on you. At some point you will need to prioritise what you see yourself doing in 10 years time, working at T&H or being your own boss
Frenchman here : it's "Rambouye". Nice vid!
WOW ... I never heard that before! Thanks --- Ralph
From Weather Wool’s online pics of their Anorak, it doesn’t button all the way to or right below the chin, leaving the front of your neck exposed to the elements. Is there a way to minimize this exposure without having to use a gaiter or another layer?
We are moving the button up closer to the neck. But the funny thing is, i did not design the Anorak to be a true cold-weather piece. It's designed for wear over one or two light layers in temps down to roughly 15F/-10C (and up to room temp) but people keep pushing it to colder and colder weather. --- Ralph
@@WeatherWool awesome, thanks for the reply, Ralph! Hope you’re doing well.
good stuff
Isn’t it a bad thing that the buttons would rip a hole in the garment rather than just popping off? It’s much easier to replace a button than it is to fix a hole.
Hopefully you can stop in Utah on your way to or from California.
I absolutely love the look of these jackets, specially the Lynx pattern. Then I saw the price tag and almost spat out my coffee. I'll say this, I am not cheap and understand a really good jacket is going to cost some money.... but almost $900 is insane. I am willing to pay more for quality and North American made, but that's pretty hard to justify (to the wife anyway lol). One day, I will own one of these....one day.
😆 $900 for a natural American made product that will last essentially as long as you maintain it.
Lovely.
please convince him to do flat black jackets n more colours in general, please convince him to make a longer edgy style or historic jacket filson is leading in design slightly
What shoes you wearing
A The Iron Snail Weatherwool Workjacket in navy coming soon?
What are those danner boots that you are wearing ? 🤩
wonderful
Once I get rich someday, I'm definitely buying that Filson jacket. What a beaut.😂
Ebay brother. I got 3 jackets for around 1000. Look at Pendleton jackets also. 2 were new with tags, another was mint from the 60's.
When you say, “Weatherwool exceeds strength,” what strength are they exceeding?
any thoughts on Sugar Cane Whitesville Japanese Tshirts?
Dude most of Folsom is not made in America. Weather Wool is a 100% wool and raised and made in America.
WeatherWool hands down best wool garment you’ll ever purchase.
It just means weather wool goes a step beyond. So its better ;)
Filson has a lifetime guarantee any repair no problem! That Jacket is called the Timber Cruiser
I'm 6'4" and about 150lbs. Should I still go with XS in mackinaw cruiser? I'm pretty much always size S in everything.
the arm length might be an issue?
Well I went with S and it fits exactly how I want to. Room for layering but doesn't look stupidly baggy. Sleeve and body length are perfect. So if anyone my size happens to read this I suggest true to size for sure.
Haha I literally just ordered the Filson Mackinaw work jacket 2 hours ago! I went true to size (L) so hoping it fits! If anybody else has the jacket could you let me know your sizing? I’m 5 10” and 185lbs. Thanks for the great video!
You’re a Medium in Filson
@@spirodoggy30 This
Shit…. Got it for 50% off so hoping to make it work
If you got the Mackinaw Crusier, then yes you're a medium not a large. I'm 5'10" and 160 pounds. But if bought the slimmer fitting work jacket, then perhaps a Large will fit.
Love how Michael is always getting into the nitty gritty technical details of traditional fabrics and materials. I’d much rather watch something like this which actually teaches something interesting over your typical “top ten” or “best” video which is basically just a cookie cutter format for uninspired youtubers to fart out lazy consumerist opinions on what crap you should buy. If any top ten youtubers are reading this, no offence. i dunno maybe just try to be more like Mike I guess
Filson wool packer would be my choice.
This video is the first video where I actually went out and got the sponsors product lol
Hi! Can you maybe make a list of Heritage stores people should visit in New York City. Obviously the red wing store, naked and famous and 10ft single should be there, but i feel you would probably know a lot more places people should visit. Thank you!
Viberg, Alden Madison, The moulded shoe
Self edge, standard & strange. Dave’s of ny . Kauffman 😊
I wish I had the money to buy weatherwool.
Call us ... keep an eye on the Specials/Lending Library -- Thanks - Ralph
is the weatherwool itchy?
I’d say no! If you are EXTREMELY sensitive to fabrics you may think it’s a little itchy but it’s incredibly soft and you could wear it without a shirt even
What happens when I run out of videos you have? I gotta wait? That's not fun.
“Both brands use sheep that have never had sex before.” 😂. Classic! 👍🏻
I have both and WeatherWool is just a finer garment. And for me, zero itch.
Dude I really fucking like your Channel
They make great coats, but you’re totally forgot about sleeping. Indian blows them both away.
Forgot my canadian..one of those wool sweater jackets BIG COLLAR heavy duty metal zipper..and my Canadian goose down artic parka wolf collar and pants ,hiking gaitors..and a rab rabbit fur hat..on the first day of christmas.price those babies canoe..
Hey dude! I was wondering if you still communicate with vendors like Momotaro. I’d love to connect with you on your work, we have common interests and I know Japanese :)
Funny enough, my fiancé calls me Snails as a nickname (because I walk so slow lol). Plus, I love motorcycles + American work heritage style. Imagine my surprise when I found your channel! Support you all the way 👍
That filson packer is bitchin. But now I have to to see what the wizards over at iron snail come up with before I choose a coat I that's completely overkil,l at no point would this ever not be too much coat for the weather in Sacramento... Maybe I'll just get one of those goofy looking weatherwool hats. They look goofy in a good way though...I feel like hats are a good way to get people to take you less seriously... people take me to seriously and assume I'm a crazy person... An expensive goofy hat should definitely help with that somehow. Is there ever going to be a hat episode?
Dude take your time with the vids, you need to take care of yourself not just worry about us
Their mackinaw wool hunting jacket is made in bangladesh.
turn up
want to be a firefighter, eh? are we talking about wildland or city?
Just took off my WOOLRICH heavy gray shirt. Didn't wear my Pendleton heavy wool shirt..u can't buy these shirts anymore..
Filson pockets are the perfect for men that carry a purse.
Big Bill for the win! Lol
God need needs to swap to high quality brass zipper. more authentic.
Filson prices are too high and the quality is in the toilet. I've got old filson products and my clothes were mostly Filson in the past but no more. They've turned into a ladies catalog order company instead of clothing for men. I'm kinda done donating to Filson and I hope my tin jacket lasts a few more seasons because it the last piece. Too mad Filson went the way of Abercrombie & Fitch.
You need to pause a bit in between. It is hard to watch and understand everything you are saying with all the little asides.
Oh cool flannel with wool lining let me take a look... Annnnnd it's almost a grand. Well. Nope.
Yeah, it's tough to get the point across on how superior Weatherwool is to Filson without sounding like a dick. Filson has more of my money than Weatherwool. That said, if I could only have one it's an absolute no-contest win to Weatherwool. I personally prefer the old school style of Filson, but the total package Weatherwool offers is unbeatable. Just the performance alone is enough, but Alex and Ralph are incredible to deal with. I still buy stuff from Filson. I like Filson a lot. But it's not Weatherwool.
I scouted thrift shops for old pendleton, woolrich and other virgin and wool shirts, pants, jackets.also cathartt jackets, pants, bibs.
I stopped basically 2011.i hav very nice quality clothing..I never bought Filson even used $$$$
Ps..crampons,snow shoes ,winter boots,shoes ,tents( one 4 season),sleeping bags,camping stoves,water purifiers,balaclavas, gloves .given gloves,backpacks,tents to homeless.
I hav treasures...99.9 % USA...Like one more coat hudson bay or ouch buffalo.
Oops all my cowboy boots used but all great shape got hathorn boots $450 for $ 60.. basically 99 %new..6 lbs...Danner boots..cowboy hats .
The End..
Forgive me my leather jackets, long leather coat, leather duster..another leather jacket impregnated for rain.
But bottom line I'm not a purist my underwear is virgin.
Fun fact. Automotive oil filters also use microns as a unit of measurement
after watching this, I think I will buy alpaca.
Weatherwool can't be tried on or returned, right?
No it can be!
