      Imagine if Americans left the past behind and joined the rest of the world in using the metric system.

    • @frequentrage3806
      @frequentrage3806 Рік тому +1

      @@carlmarks8170 The Imperial system is better for relative human experiences like speed of a car and temperature outside. 100 speed units should represent a fast speed which it does in mph but doesn't in kph. Similarly 100 should represent a really hot temperature not 37. Metric is fine for science though

    • @hypnogri5457
      @hypnogri5457 Рік тому +8

      @@frequentrage3806that's subjective though. You might say that 100C being hot is more intuitive but someone from Europe might say: Celsius is more intuitive because 0C is freezing cold, 10C is chilly, 20C is perfect, 30C is warm, 40C is very hot, etc...
      The intuition comes with time and not from the scale used

    • @frequentrage3806
      @frequentrage3806 Рік тому +1

      @@hypnogri5457 since when has anyone used scales from 1-4? It’s not natural, we operate on scales of 10s we were born with 10 fingers for a reason

    • @hypnogri5457
      @hypnogri5457 Рік тому +2

      @@frequentrage3806 It really just depends on the person. Btw, not all people used decimal, there were other number systems, too. For example you might segment each finger into 3 pieces so that you can count with your thumb. This lets you count to 12 on one hand. By this counting system the natural number is 12 and not 10. (The Egyptians used a number system with base 12 so its not just some random example.)
      What is “natural” changes over time. People will always think that the thing they are familiar with is more “natural” but in reality its just a matter of using the system and adapting to it. (Most of the time)
      Also 100F = hot is just as arbitrary as 100C being boiling water or 0C being freezing cold. By the way, my point isnt that C is better than F. Its just as good even in science as its just a different scale. (Shifted and scaled, all scientific formulas *could* be used with F. (There is Kelvin analog for F too, so its just as useful for temperatures near 0K.)
      Now the other imperial units… those are less intuitive and less practical, in my opinion - thats a different beast entirely.
      Btw: A scale of 4 is used for GPA’s in America. Some ratings are also x/4. 4 is a practical and small number. But yeah, scales of all different sizes are used everywhere all around the world.
      Some psychological/scientific surveys use 4 answers on their scale. “I strongly agree”, “I agree”, “I disagree”, “I strongly disagree”, etc… the list goes on

      Settle down. Motor paced records are a thing. I'm quite confident few other people could achieve that speed on skates, even if they were being towed. FWIW, the motor paced speed record for a pedal powered bicycle is 296km/h. Should we just dismiss it because there was a car in front of it breaking the headwind?
