  • Episode 50. I finally take a look at a whisky Jim Murray has rated #1 in Canada for many years. Alberta Distillers do make some amazing Rye, but is this it? Well, the short answer is no. However, take a look and tell me what you think of Alberta Premium Rye. (Apologies for the video work too!) #whiskyfabric#whiskytube#whiskyneighbour #whiskyfabric#whiskytube#whiskyneighbour

This is one of my favorites for starting out and calibrating my palate. I always have a bottle because it's pleasant and cheap, and especially for the times when I want a drink, not a challenge, like after work it's just my perfect go to.

It's a stand-by bottle for sure. It's highly underrated on its own for the price. It really shines as a cocktail ingredient or (on a hot day) in a highball with some ice soda and citrus peel. My biggest criticism of it would be to call it "pleasant".

This is my favourite at this level, maybe I'm a little biased because I came to Alberta 21 years ago and had no money to buy expensive stuff, but this whisky blew my mind. Out of Canada, I was exposed only to C.C. and C.R. ONLY for Canadian whisky, but now I know and can buy better stuff, but I keep coming back to this one

“...enjoy your drink; tell me what you think. I didn’t mean to RYEmmm.” Classic, Jon. Perhaps that should be your trademark closing remark, it’s actually a good one.
Back to business: love the Alberta Premium bottle. It screams Canadian ( not like a Canadian would ever scream, mind you.). The whisky is pleasant enough but just that. Jim Murray is just another guy with an opinion. Granted he may be more qualified, learned and experienced, but ultimately its an opinion he gives. Frankly, I sometimes think he’s been spoiled by years of the good stuff and now sees bottom or middle shelf products as amazing. Similar to how you can convince yourself that a $200 bottle of paint thinner is great. It’s because you’re not used to it, it becomes special.
And, that’s what I think. (there, you have to keep the line now...)

    • @WhiskyNeighbour

I dont know if he has financial other interests in certain whiskys. I won't be buying any further issues as he might have a good palate but the only palate I have to go by is my own and I find him way off at times, like this time. I've never been a fan of Jim Murray. I started out my whisky journey with Ralfy as my guide and he's been ringing the bell of 'each person's experience is different' and 'intentionally independent from the spirits industry' since the very beginning. They may well be giving Jim Murray a much better sampling. Spirit companies, distilleries, etc... do that with most reviewers, and I'd imagine they'd be especially careful with the samples they give Jim Murray. Just because you don't get all of the nuances and range that Jim Murray finds by following his fastidious routine that most people would never bother with and don't have the time for, doesn't invalidate your experience. It's your money, it's your nose and palate, and it's your whisky. If you don't like it, if you love the hell out of it, or if your experience lies somewhere in between, then that's what's important. Sorry if this a bit rant-y. I'm the president and founder of my whisky club, and I tell the other members of my club this same message all the time. They feel like they're just not good enough to smell and taste all of the nuances that others get. It's about experience, exposure to smells and tastes (i.e. actually finding some violets and finding out what violets smell like), and individual noses and palates. Give it some time, be curious, and trust YOUR nose and palate. You got this John!

One of the very FEW true rye whiskies in Canada, One highly rated Canadian rye whisky has no rye in it at all!!!! My go to whiskey since the time of their "Alberta Sipping Whisky" so many decades ago, I believe it was also 100% Canadian prairie rye & 10 years old and I believe it IS the basis for Alberta Springs Whiskey that they spoiled by adding a small amount of corn whisky making the whiskey overly sweet.
But Alberta Premium in a mixed drink drink is great; for drinking straight go for the 20 year old!!
Canadian Club is the same whisky aged 7 years instead of 5 and aged the last two years in different wood barrels.

Why they don't release some of that high proof aged Rye in Canada is beyond me. The best ADL Rye in the world is this. Incredible stuff.
