    Lyrics
Living in lies by the railway line
Pushing the hair from my eyes
Elvis is English and climbs the hills
Can't tell the bullshit from the lies
    Screaming along in South London
    Vicious but ready to learn
Sometimes I fear that the whole world is queer
    Sometimes but always in vain
So I'll wait until we're sane
Wait until we're blessed and all the same
Full of blood, loving life and all it's got to give
    Englishmen going insane
Down on my knees in Suburbia
Down on myself in every way
With great expectations I change all my clothes
Mustn't grumble at silver and gold
    Screaming above Central London
Never bored, so I'll never get old
So I'll wait until we're sane
Wait until we're blessed and all the same
Full of blood, loving life and all it's got to give
    Englishmen going insane
Down on my knees in suburbia
Down on myself in every way
Day after, day after day, day after
Zane, Zane, Zane, Ouvre le chien
    Day after day, day after
Zane, Zane, Zane, Ouvre le chien
    Day after
    About David Bowie:
David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie at 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

OH MY GOD. I heard this song on the radio driving home from college once 20 years ago and I have been searching for it ever since without success. I bought like a dozen Bowie albums and none of them had it. Just tonight I was lamenting to my husband that there was this one Bowie song I was never able to track down. I told him all I can remember was it "sounded like it was from the 90s and it was a real vibe 😅." And he says, "Have you heard Buddha of Suburbia? I noticed you never got that album." And I popped on youtube and BAM! A 20 year mystery solved. This song transports me. Gorgeous. Why did I never ask him sooner?? Lol.

Ben Tyreman This got bad press? Really?! This album came out in 93, right? I was 7 in ‘93, and only knew Bowie via my fav childhood fantasy flick, but when I went through his 90s catalogue, I always thought that this album, soundtrack or not, was probably in the top 3 best albums he released in the 90s. I’ve seen retrospective reviews that praised this album, so I had no idea it was shit on initially. That’s wild to me. ✌🏼

There’s a lot of his 90s stuff that wasn’t well received at the time - by fans and critics alike - because it didn’t fit the trajectory they wanted or expected his art to follow.
Retrospectively, of course, a lot of it is really good. It makes sense when you understand what he was trying to do, and how what he was trying to do didn’t always match up with what the fans wanted him to do.
1: Outside is one of my favourite Bowie albums. It doesn’t always hit its mark, but I love what he was going for. 20 years ahead of his time, as ever.

Fun fact: I'm sure most of you recognized the riff from "Space Oddity" at 3:23, but there's actually a more obscure reference a bit later in the song. Bowie's repetition of the line "Day after day" and starting at 3:45 "Zane, Zane, Zane, Ouvre le chien" comes from his song "All the Madmen" from the _The Man Who Sold the World_ album. _Ouvre le chien_ is nothing more than a nonsense phrase that Bowie came up with, which translates from French to "Open the dog." If any of you have been keeping up with my fun facts on these Bowie videos, specifically the one I posted on "Jump They Say", you may remember that "All the Madmen" was about Bowie's schizophrenic half-brother Terry. The nonsense phrase "Open the dog" was probably in reference to his schizophrenia.

    • @thewomanwithnohead
      @thewomanwithnohead 6 років тому +34

      Right !
That "Ouvrez le chien" sentence also comes from an old Surrealist short movie from Luis Bunuel & Salvador Dali called "Un chien Andalou". Which also inspired the band Pixies ... That's an insane link without any end :-) !

I'm not a huge fan of "Greatest Hits" albums....🤔 By definition they tend to be an artist's more commercial work.
Bowie's gold lies in the hills of the work he produced in the 70's & in particular the three albums that make up the holy trinity of what is widely considered his greatest period.
If you would like recs for album tracks, let me know, I've been listening to the guy for probably 50 years now!
