This awful NBA free agency decision involved a Jason Kidd rescue mission and ... Patrick Roy?

  • NBA free agency is weird to begin with. NBA free agency gets especially weird when a player changes his mind mid-stream. That's how you end up with executives and players frantically bothering -- and even holding captive -- a guy trying to make one of the most important decisions of his career.
Such was the case in 1999, when star power forward Antonio McDyess planned to sign with the Denver Nuggets, a team that had traded him to the Phoenix Suns just a year prior. Despite Denver's inferior salary offer, inferior team, inferior weather ... it's just what Antonio wanted. Until he didn't. And then he did again.
McDyess's waffling sparked an all-out pursuit from both the Suns and Nuggets, which led to a very strange scene: One team trying to keep him focused inside their arena while the other team sat outside the arena, desperately trying to get in and rescue Antonio. It was weird.
CORRECTION: 7:33 we included a photo of Marc Denis, not Patrick Roy. we will be going to bed with no supper as a result.

it feels like the nuggets pulled a lebron and there was this plan to have him leave the team so they could improve through the draft since no free agents came to denver at that time and they did go 11-71 and that roster feels like a tank roster like 2015-2016 philly or 2011-2012 bobcats levels of tanking and then he comes back maybe the team had this plan without telling him or he could of been involved in this plan and knew the whole time....thats what it seems like to me...maybe i am wrong....who knows

As a young teenager I was a huge Jason Kidd fan. Didn’t understand why McDyess left Phoenix. I was so disappointed. They signed Tom Gugliotta. Not same player as McDyess. Kidd and McDyess had a great chemistry on the court. Could have maybe done some damage in West if everyone was healthy. I don’t know if they could beaten those Shaw and Kobe teams. Thanks for bringing up some good memories...Be safe and well!

The only thing missing from this is the GM who traded McDyess was Allen Bristow. Who compiled a Nuggets team that went 11-71 that year. Issel was made GM after Bristow was fired. Also, Van Exel during the strike that year was training with McDyess and that friendship is what had him go back to the Nuggets.
As a Nuggets fan, the signing was good at the moment, but long term it did not provide the results they wanted.
By 2002 Van Exel and Raef LaFrentz we’re traded to Dallas, MyDyess that year has an injury where he sat out that whole year and during that offseason, McDyess was traded to the Knicks.
Tough period for us Nuggets fans

I got an another Maccabi Tel Aviv fiasco for you guys. the year is 1998. A euroleague game between Maccabi and Cibona Zagrev. The last game in the first stage of the regular season. Maccabi won the first game between the 2 teams by 19 points. Down 73-57 with 01:30 left, Maccabi coach, the "colorful" Pini Gershon realized they could not win the game. They also realized that it's better for them to lose by at least 19 so Cibona would pass them in the group table. that way, Maccabi would get a more comfortable draw in the next stage (meaning teams Maccabi feels are weaker than the other possible draw). So Maccabi started jacking up hopeless 3's and quickly fouling Cibona Players. Cibona's coach caught up though (He was fired from Maccabi the year prior) . he told his players to intentionally miss free throws. so then we have a couple minutes of hilarity including a Maccabi player accidentally banking in a 3. In the final seconds and up 17, A Cibona player gets 2 more FTs. He bricks the first one. On the bottom of the screen you can see Maccabi player Gur Shelef, instructing his teammate, the 7-3 Constantine Popa to go for the "accidental" tip-in to their own basket after the upcoming, expected miss. Alas the Cibona player was one step ahead and made the FT. putting his team 18 points up and making sure Maccabi wouldnt reach their goal. Let me know if you want more context and stories about this story. they are a plenty!
