Chris Webber's beef with Don Nelson was a power struggle that ruined the Warriors

  • In 1993 Don Nelson and the Warriors put all their eggs in the Chris Webber basket. They gave up three first round picks to get him, and then loaded his contract with incentives including an opt-out clause.
Nelson desperately needed a center, and he could make Webber play center. Did Webber want to play center for the Warriors? Well, no. But, c’mon, you had an outstanding, strong-willed player, and an outstanding, strong-willed coach teaming up! What could possibly go wrong? Egos colliding in an irreversible explosion with ramifications that lasted for years? Yep. You guessed it. If this beef were on a menu, it’d have three chili peppers next to it.

Small ball started with Red Auerbach, who Nellie played for. Russell was not a back to the basket center. EVERY SINGLE other center in the league was. Russell was not even the third option on offense. EVERY SINGLE other center in the league was the first or second option. Red and Russell let Sam Jones, Cousy, Havlicek, Nellie, Ramsey, and Heinsohn do all the scoring, and mostly from the perimeter. Yes, Nellie, D'Antoni and others expanded on it and of course today that' all they do. Red and Nellie used it to be different and because other teams weren’t used to defending it. Today it’s used because the centers (actually all the players) are SOFT and have zero post up skills, also because almost every player in the league just wants to shoot threes all game. It’s not original, creative or hard to defend because every team in the league is doing it. It's boring and unimaginative. In addition, due to the lack of physical defense, all small players can thrive now.

Penny complimented Shaq's game and was happy to be the Robin to Shaq's Batman. Nelson was head over heels for Bradley.
One of his first moves after coming to Dallas was trading for him (I think it was the Mashburn trade?).... he was hell bent on building around Bradley, and Bradley finally breaking through and being an elite center.
Shawn Bradley owes Don Nelson a lot. Without Nelson's man crush, Bradley is out of the league after the 96-97 season. Instead he played 8 more years, mostly because Nelson convinced Cuban that "this is the big man we need" like Obi Wan Kenobi. The Mavs were stuck with Bradley and an albatross of a salary bigger than the Morman big man.

I can understand why Webber wanted out. And Nelson was a great coach (and GM), but knowing he had that opt out, he should have laid off for that season - definitely a mistake on Nelson’s part. They both deserve blame here. They had a good thing going and were loaded with talent. I’m positive they both reflect on this and both wish they handled things differently. Ironic that Webber ended his career in Golden State - with Nelson as his coach; too little too late.

That being said, he was/is a miserable human being, a narcissist, and a bully. He probably knows it too.
His comment about “if you’re getting raped, you might as well lay back and enjoy it” should have gotten him fired on the spot.
IU tolerated his BS because he was still hanging National Championship and Big Ten Championship banners and he had a cult-like following in the state of Indiana.

I feel fans don't realize how important the relationship a rookie has with the organization can be in the first year.
whether being hard or enabling mistakes or being cautious with development , the wrong system or approach can make or break a players entire career.
Webber was probably a player that would've flourished on a team where the coach would push positive reinforcement but the leadership and tough love would come from the players themselves.
Combined with not having big responsibilities wouldve been the best plan for Webber . forcing him to be responsible for teams success, being blamed for teams mistakes but still coming out as a top team damaged dudes psyche .
and we got to see that man never get over the hump for 15 years even though he was an amazing player. he was traumatized by Nelson . it's funny to say that considering the entire team seemed to be successful in the whole.
Webber's entire career would've been different had Nelson just passed on praise to Webber for getting that team to better situation.
At least he would be aware that the tough remarks was to make him better but that if he DEMONSTRATES the improvement at least give him some credit.
otherwise not playing him and not throwing so much at him would've been best. let him earn the time. then let him earn his stardom.
