There's definitely a psychological aspect when faced with a provocative or unsound opening - you want to punish your opponent, but can end up overreaching or falling into some home prep.
bro it's a stupid game. live and learn, live and learn. who cares, i got beat up when someone do weird sideline of englund everytime. i dont think its worth my energy to learn these opening and im like 2000. if they really learn this shit and do their homework just to take my stupid online points then by all means, good for them.
When you do face a stupid opening, being solid and taking space with a faster development is usually key especially in lower elo in my limited exp. of low elo games. Trying to instantly punish the openings can result in overextentions and you usually faster go into positions you don't really know.
Fun fact: in russian "grob"(гроб) means "casket" or "coffin". This opening is especially hilarious for russians because for them it sounds like you're some kind of undertaker that plays a "casket opening" and literally buries his opponent alive.
Just so you know. At that time Levy wasn't that famous yet and his opponent had more subscribers on YT. That guy runs the most famous russian speaking chess channel "Chessmaster". So yeah, technically at that time Levy could say something like that.

Speaking of obscure bad openings, would you happen to know anything about the Shmoe attack? If I'm not mistaken, it's a sideline of the Hammershlagg variation, but all record of it seems to have been purged from the internet. Asking for a friend.
@@seancarterx I, for one, am being entirely sincere in this request. My friend has been looking for information about the Schmoe attack, and there are no leads whatsoever.
Why not start the response with queen's pawn d5 which is a solid central move while simultaneously attacking the grob pawn with the queen's bishop. Thirdly this pawn blocks the future attack of his king's bishop on the main diagonal while being defended by the queen. If he pushes his pawn then e5, attack it yet again with the queen while establishing a fully controlled center. How is grob even good, I don't get it. Seems terrible other than establishing the bishop on the main diagonal slightly earlier.
It's not good, but it's different enough that even with the main line (what you said) there are lots of tricks that can catch people below the GM level
I'm a player who plays super safe super paranoid, just like I do in Texas Hold-em, you know fold a lot early, but, when you pull out the crazy card, occasionally, you baffle them so that your betters play without intelligence, or rather, their intelligence plays against them. I will play the Hippo as black and white, then pull the Crab out of my ass, and win by surprise. But isn't that the essence of tactics, and of strategy. Do not do what they would dearly love you to do. The Grob has a sick genius that only Grob, Claude Bloodgood, and the delightful Michael Basman fully understood, and also Gotham's bête noir, whose games I would very much like to study. Basman's version of the Hippo was the St. George, (and the Creepy-Crawly) which is another Diagon Alley to surprise those who think they know your chess. Also useful both as black and white. Then... go back, to the Caro-Kann, both as black and it's chameleon twin, the Saragossa as white. Then.. wait. The fog of war slightly clears, and you survey the map, sift the spies, and push. Thanks for your gift of that moment of Russian. Salut.
