@@Dalek97 Hard to say, but the chemistry between her and 12 was undeniably excellent. I do wish 11 had gotten his own Master to play with though. I had a dream at that time, especially since both actors knew each other and were both Moffat adjacent, if they could have somehow worked Benedict Cumberbatch in as his Master. Of course, that would have demanded an entire rewrite of at least one whole series to accommodate such an awesome pairing.

Well done explaining Hartnell's departure. The sugar coated version is that he decided to leave cos of his health, but fact is he was pushed out. And as for Troughton - I think it must have been an interview with Fraser where he said that Troughton's wife was pushing him to leave WHO and do some more "serious" acting... As much as I LOVE Troughton (ahh - note my channel name...!), I think 3 seasons worked for him.

The Ninth doctor wasn't newly regenerated he'd been the doctor for ages by the time he meets rose. Who becomes his first real companion as before he'd always been running from his past & rose was the 1st person who actually made him stop running & start to properly face what he'd done. That's kinda shown by the whole Doctor fan guy & by obviously extended Media we've gotten since. Also I think part of why they didn't really bring McGann in was because he'd been the face of the doctor for most of the wilderness years along with the 5th, 6th & 7th doctors. Who became a part of the comics, books & Audio dramas of the era. So it was probably just that they wanted a new person to become the face of the new show. I think its also partly due to wanting the return to be rather secret until it was announced with the tapes being labelled Torchwood & the use of lesser known actors instead of ones who'd bring attention to the filming.

@@thewholookHonestly if they found just the right person I'd be ok with it, it's great to think we could see The Doctor at all points of his life (and them meeting each other) without much hassle, even just for some flashbacks when The Doctor's memories prove relevant to the story - But as much as it means we could have earlier Doctors "just as they were", I think it equally important to give each actor their time in the sun, unlike poor William Hartnell. Without it, we wouldn't get Tom Baker's contribution being honoured by appearing as The Curator, Peter Davison's 5 meeting Tennant's Ten, Colin Baker reprising 6 in Tales from the Tardis, which has all been lovely, and you could still have Sylvester McCoy's 7 and Paul McGann and 8 have some onscreen adventures yet! I heard a different story with Tom Baker. At the nearing of the end of each season he would say that he's leaving because of the pay, but each time, the producers convinced him to stay and up his pay, but when JNT came along and Tom tried that, JNT said "Alright", and then went looking for a new Doctor. Tom Baker has later said that he regrets leaving because it was he loved doing that job. The bit about Lalla Ward being a reason for Tom Baker leaving is just false.

i think there's alot of gaps with capaldi at this point in time. Yes you could say he left as he didnt want a similar ressentiment that baker would harbor between a new show runner but i think thats just a surface level answer to keep good connections with bbc. But there's definitely alot of other claims from the inner production that he was asked to leave nicely as the bbc was getting cold feet with viewings getting progressively less through his tenure. Perhaps one day we'll get more solid answers but to claim that he simply just couldnt handle work load when the guy was previously working on multiple productions both abroad and in the uk and his lifelong dream was too much to handle? No way. Even currently his recent comments on him not going back because he doesnt beleive in multi-doctor stories when he himself appeared in one briefly... idk im curious if the show some does end for a while and its not a deal breaker for his acting maybe he'll discuss more about it. The moffat era in general is very shrouded in mystery in some regards.

Hartnell's cause of death was his illness, so I find that very unlikely. You have to remember that Doctor Who is infamous for keeping a difficult and tight schedule, so it's a much more demanding job than a lot of other acting would be. Doctor Who being more demanding than most jobs is something the vast majority of actors who played the Doctor have attested to at one point or another. You can imagine how Doctor Who would have been particularly difficult for Hartnell given his condition, in a way that other acting jobs likely weren't.

By the third year most Doctors start showing fatigue, and I don't think that is all acting on their part, rather it just gets written into the story to explain why (typically because they have gone through pure hell by then in the previous seasons story wise). I would almost prefer a rule that no actor stays more than 3 years. @@rustybrooks8916 Eccleston had worked with RTD on a show called The Second Coming which he had enjoyed, so when he heard RTD was going to be doing Who he contacted him about it, thinking it would be a nice challenge to do something more family oriented. RTD, realising that getting such a respected actor in the lead role would lend the show the kind of legitimacy it had never really had before, agreed. Chris has never specifically said what caused him to leave but the general consensus is that something went drastically wrong during the first shooting block with Keith Boak (which I think was Rose and the Aliens of London 2-parter). The production had a lot of issues with time and budget and started spiralling out of control, at which point (apparently) Chris felt some of the cast and crew were being treated badly by Boak.
At this point - and again this is all conjecture and reading between the lines - Chris felt he had to do something and took his concerns higher, whether to Julie Gardner and Phil Collinson or all the way up to RTD himself I don't know, and he wasn't happy with the response they gave. The shooting block finally finished up and Boak was never asked back, but the whole incident seems to have caused irreperable harm to Chris's trust in the production team. After giving it some thought he told them he didn't want to stay on, and given that Tennant was waiting in the wings and desperate to do it they let him go.
Unfortunately while all this was going on the tabloids got hold of the story and went to the BBC for a comment. Someone at the BBC gave them a completely made-up reason for the departure, something to do with not wanting to be typecast. This only further infuriated Eccleston who was livid that the BBC were giving statements on his behalf without coming to him first. That was kind-of the final nail in the coffin and he has seemingly sworn off ever coming back, especially now the people who he felt let down by are back in charge.
It's important to note that his ire seems to be entirely directed at RTD and the other producers. The show and the character he seems to have a lot of respect and affection for, hence why he's done so many fan events and agreed to work with BF lately. But as for the TV show, I think you've got more chance of seeing Pat Troughton back on it that Eccleston. Which is a real shame.

Yeah I heard about this. I think, as WhoCulture have claimed, it was just a coincidence. They claim they were working on it for a week (so a few days before mine went up). As I said before, I can only assume it was a coincidence we both did it, and I appreciate people who mentioned me over on the comment section as well having my back just in case. Genuine question, why? I liked her a lot but i feel like Chibnall did such a bad job leading doctor who that i find it hard to point at her version as a decent incarnation when she had no time to show much serious sides underneath the goofiness and the contradictions the writing made her have compared to the Doctors before her.

She’s said after she left that she’s open to returning in the future so I doubt we’ve seen the last of her, but not as a leading role.
Though Russell claims he isn’t a fan of multi-doctor stories, although he’s already done one so clearly isn’t as bothered by them as he used to claim, he’s also not unfamiliar with writing for other revival doctors that weren’t his as he wrote for Matt Smiths Doctor

The regeneration process from 10th to 11th, that was written by Russell, but then after Matt Smith appears on screen for the first time, the last few seconds of the episode were written by Steven Moffat. David and Matt also played the role well in the current version of the show but this latest one just feels Wrong. R.I.P Dr. at least I have the older ones that I can watch over and over again.
