I have had alocasia's for years, and i'm happy to say that I have never had spider mites on them 🙂I love how many corms they produce, they are such beautiful plants. 🥰
I can understand the comment of philodendron looking the same…just like anthuriums, or monstera, or hoya, or almost any other “categorized” grouping. It’s literally part of the definition of them having similarities and being grouped lol! Personally I think it takes a love of each and the knowledge of each to see that just like people, we may have categories, differences, and sometimes look the same or completely different…we are still all people breathing air, eating food and getting the same sunlight just like our worlds plants! Exactly,. Lack of knowledge can outcome shallow comment/ opinion. However for true collectors, their love on certain plants can outweigh the price. But for seller.. they'll keep their eyes wide open for price drop 😂
I’m notcing that Mexican pinguiculas are getting more attention because they are a great way to naturally control fungus gnats in houseplant collections. They’re also really pretty and make a great companion plant.
It’s definitely not about the flexin and sellin anymore. Thank God. Collecting is not about making money. It’s about collecting and feeding our addiction without breaking the bank. Of course there are going to be trending and expensive plants here and there, but with the way TC is booming, we can all collect without breaking our bank accounts!
Albos and Doc Block at big box stores…I’d be terrified to be a seller. It must be something in the water bc I just bought a bunch of Hoya. I wish begonia was more popular than they were.
Begonias are big in Asia. They’re making their way to the US. Only plants on YT has a lot of the Indonesian plant cons from a month to a few months ago
Indonesia TC is focusing on LOTS of variegation in aroids TC Hoyas would rock!! So many variations grow very slow compared to many plants. Not ZZ or Monstera BMF but slow. Don’t fall for splash or tricolor. They can get those with higher light.

I invested in a number of young Anthurium that have one variegated parent. None of them are showing variegation, and the price was very reflective of that. But, if I have 8 plants that all carry the capability of producing variegated offspring, I can breed them and try to get variegated babies to sell. I'm not in it for the money, just looking to play around with breeding and make some money to buy new plants. Variegated plants are still going for a premium and I hope that is the case when my plants are mature.
I’ve recently been into the platycerium stuff. I have about 5! Half of them are mounted on some nice aesthetic wood and I can’t wait for them to get big. -jenny -omg -pegasus -bacteria -jade girl
Very good vid. One thing you were not able to touch on is the increasing number of morphological mutations that seem to be showing up on posts on social media (oh heck, their adverts, correct?). As a collector and also a horticulture professional, these aren’t plants that I would ever buy, but caveat emptor, and just interested in your opinion if these mutations will become popular in the market.
Fully agree with everything in this one, I'm looking forward to new variegated alocasia myself. Keep pronouncing it aloCAsia by the way, it's more fun that way 😂

Market is super flooded with anthurium. Everyone and their mother is half hazardly crossing naming them stupid names and making a mess of breeding. This is why the reputable breeders can still command a higher price.
What I'm wondering is how high the prices will stay when there's so much more offer around, not only in the number of plants but also in variety. It used to be simple when there were like a couple dozens each of Philodendrons, Alocasias, Anthuriums, etc. available on the market but now there are literally hundreds of them, either rare varieties making it out of collections (or the jungle, unfortunately), new crosses, new mutants, etc. So they can't all be on everyone's wishlists, right? I remember when only Monstera Thai Constellation, GoG and small-form aurea and albo were available but now there must be a few hundreds mutations documented online and the people who've been collecting for a long time are importing them from all over the world and that's not even counting new mutations that occur during propagation and the awareness around sports hunting that's also increasing. Anyway, tl:dr is that with all the new plants on offer, demand naturally has to spread out and my understanding of this is that prices will keep on going down. Also, great video, I agree with pretty much all of your points, I'm also not that excited about the new Philodendron hybrids because most of them are about variegation while I mostly love Philodendrons for their cool leaf shapes.

I think the new billietiae x jose buono's looks kinda interesting, but I cannot find a picture of a mature one anywhere. Did you ever try to make your own philodendron hybrids? I think it would be insteresting to learn more about it. How to pollinate and which species are easier and faster to get to bloom and so on...
I am bit tired of tc. It feels like we have lost appreciation for beauty in rarity. We don’t get enough time to study lifecycle of plants and understand their strength and wekness.
There are so very many different types of plants, while these newer plants are interesting I wish the planty world would move on a bit from the ones listed here. But yet I still watch these videos to see what “new “ plants are out! 🪴

100% agree! I started with only 1 or 2 that I had for a couple years, and then in 2024 I added like 20 to my collection within a few months 😂
