Apple sell 8 to 1 Swiss watches, Seiko have increased sales and many fashion watches. In fact the ratio out of 10 is, Apple 6, fashion watches 2, Seiko 1.2 and Swiss watches 0.8.
Thanks for this Adrian. I find this video very credible even though I recently offered a different perspective or possible strategy. But THIS is the long term Rolex strategy that sounds most likely to me. Thanks for the inside information ℹ️!
Marc, you're a clever guy with a background in the corporate world, aren't you? I'm surprised to see you spreading these hokum theories about Rolex being about to "flood the market", etc. You must surely understand that it is marketing 101 in the luxury branch that you _NEVER_ flood the market! Supply can never comfortably meet demand - if you want your product to be exclusive and sought-after. This is something that Jean-Claude Biver, for example, has quite openly spoken about in various talks and interviews. He wasn't talking about Rolex in particular but the Swiss luxury watch industry in general, but the point holds. The best we can hope for is that they _slightly_ ease up on the steel supply - if they feel it is beginning to lag too far behind demand. But even that isn't by any means a given. They could, for example, have a long term strategy to move away from steel and towards precious metal!?
Thanks for watching Marc. Always a pleasure having you here. Whatever we hear, there’s always going to be a massive cloud shading the truth about Rolex. We can only report on what we’re told.
@@BarkandJack Clouds or no clouds, Adrian, I'll grind up my Rolex and swallow it in a banana flavour milkshake if Rolex ever "flood the market". It's not happening because it would be disastrous for Rolex if it happened. Simples.
Adrian can do make some videos on fitting a nato strap to various pieces? Rolex sub, Daytona, omega’s brietling and Panerai. I want to see how your NATO’s would look on these brands then I can go mad ordering them for my collection. It’s hard to imagine the look and a few friends I have spoken to would get a nato but don’t know how to remove bracelets and what sort of spring bars they need to make sure they don’t fall off. Perhaps you could add spring bars to the shop or do a strap and bars?
Hi All, Maybe I have been lucky. I got my All Black (Green Arrow) GMT by a tip-off from a mate that one was recently arrived at an AD and unallocated. I went in a few hours later and it was my first ever Rolex (sentimentally bought on day of mum's birthday) in 2016. 2.5 years later after about a 10 month wait I have a Rootbeer GMT. Lovely too! I love them both. Wear em, enjoy em keep em! Simples!" Don't crowd the forums asking what one you should get on basis of worth, value, appreciation, forum views - buy what you want/makes you happy!
Get well soon mate... Surprising to hear those VIPs wait that long. That said, ADs have absolute control over final allocation - as an example, I know a very reputable AD where the manager's brother in law got a daytonaC with zero purchase history or wait... Probably ahead of several VIPs... there's no "universal truth" I guess 😅
The 114270 was my first Rolex and will always be my favorite Rolex. A return to 36mm for the Explorer, if only as an option, would be a great idea in my book. As for the supply/production aspect, Rolex's response is exactly what I expected. The expense of expansion is not worth the risk when they're selling every watch they are currently producing. Others who moved too quickly were caught in the unenviable position of having to buy watches back from ADs. Rolex is taking the wise course.
Off course they will move into retail. I have been in retail for quite some years, and in the retail landscape is shifting enormously. The future of brick and mortar in the most important cities of the world is one where all strong brands have a retail presence. Not to sell, but to provide a prime customer experience.
One thing that people tend to forget about Rolex, is that it's a charitable trust and not a company with shareholders. Omega on the other hand, have investors to please so they need to turn a good profit. Rolex make the numbers they are able to, the popularity and attraction to certain models is down to us. The ADs are the ones with the wait lists and you need to shop around to find one who is open to a fairer distribution of the "must have" models.
This is what Rolex do. Very good marketing on rolex part. They know there not patek or any other high end. They have just got a great marketing team. Make them hard to get and suddenly everybody wants one.
Rolex's best marketing team is the world, everyone knows them and everyone wants one. It's like a BMW or Merc, Aston Martin makes "better" cars but most people's grails is buying a robust German Mid Tier car, which is what Rolex is to the watch world.
Went to a similar event organised by my local AD a few weeks ago and it was excellent, saw and tried on all the watches you mentioned . Also been wearing my new 39mm Explorer 1 pretty much constantly for the two weeks I have owned it, its exceeded my expectations which were high. It simply flies under the radar, it's classy with a suit and sporty with jeans and a T shirt.
I can't see the 36mms explorer making a comeback. It's just not the way the market's moving. Besides, you can't go changing the explorer formula. Not after staying true for so long. I think the (fairly) recent changes made to the hands and lumed 3/6/9 were as radical as I'm comfortable with. If anything the explorer II is the model due an update. Either way, I'm just thrilled Rolex are giving the explorer it's time in the limelight for a change. Overdue.
I tend to agree. As a 214270 mk2 owner i'm a bit biased but I can't see much you could do to improve it beyond just throwing the new movement in it. The Exp II is a different story.
Along with the Milgauss pump prior to last Basel, I’d guess the Explorer push is to boost sales in the only sport models left to be found in the AD’s cases. At least in the US, I’ve found that the 42mm Exp2 and Milgauss are the only ones to be found at ADs. An update for any of those models come next Basel would be exciting though!
I’d say it’s just Rolexes cool Marketing & the Explorer fits the bill for adventure advertising to propel this side of them as a pioneering brand. The price in the USA is $5,677 at the AD which is £4,470
Scriak I thought it would be more money considering the price of the Rolex 39mm oyster perpetual 114300 which I consider a lesser model, but still v/nice ?
@@SGM805 In fairness, aesthetics aside, the only practical benefit of the Explorer over the standard Oyster Perpetual is the Oysterlock safety clasp. They both share the same case, bracelet and 3132 movement. However, I'd imagine the story behind the Explorer also goes some way to Rolex charging a higher price. I've owned a 214270 since 2016 and it's a brilliant everyday watch!
My AD in Dallas, TX told me two days ago that they will no longer be carrying Rolex the brand as Rolex the company is opening a boutique just down the road. There are two other ADs nearby and one of them has a separate Rolex boutique attached... not clear what their future holds.
The only thing I can see happening to the Explorer and Explorer II is an upgrade of the movement, to bring it to 70 hours like they did for the GMT Master. I love the idea of an Explorer scaled back to the classic 36mm size, but seeing that they already offer the OP and the DJ in this size, I would be astonished if they did.
Just before Baselworld 2020: - "Hey, what should we do with the Explorer?" - "Maybe we can bring down the 2 to 40mm from the huge 42mm?" - "Hm, maybe but no..." - "Maybe we can bring down the 1 to 36mm from 39 which is still too big compared to the original?" - "Hm, nope..." - "Ok: Jubilee bracelet on both?" - "Yeah for it!"
🤣 oh so sorry, I’ll just throw my plans for a Rolex in the garbage and buy an omega just because you say so. Oh wait, I’ve had both, and can’t say I agree at all.
I have just put my name down (on Monday) with a local AD for a Hulk submariner, also added a Root Beer GMT Master as second choice, and a steel and gold submariner third. Got a phone call on Thursday offering me the steel and gold sub straight away which I found very very surprising. Declined as I am not quite ready to spend over £10k, and told the AD I wouldn’t be ready until next year, and also because it is the Hulk I really want, and if spend £10k on my third choice watch, it takes for first 2 off the table for years.... did I make the right choice? Could I have made some money on the steel and gold to help with the other purchases?
They’re still (December 2020) pushing the polar explorer! Was in first page spread of the economist a few times this year. I hope they update the watch rather than discontinue the range.
@Some Phaggot Agreed. Funny, when you think that at one point the milgaus green dial was a waiting list, retailing for almost twice its value... Times have changed.
"(Omega) want everyone to have an Omega on their wrist, Rolex do what they want to do and they don't need our input" Sounds like Omega is the company I'd rather buy from...
Interesting but still very sceptical about wait lists. I went in to my local AD recently (just South of Birmingham) to be vetted and was told the steel Submariner date I had asked for would be something like 6 - 9 months wait time. Low and behold they have one for me to pick up within 3 weeks. The impression I got was wait time depends whether your face fits and they believe your story and not going to flip it!
Thanks for sharing the experience, Adrian. It would be awesome if Rolex shrunk the Explorer I by around 1.5mm. A 37.5mm Explorer I would be the sweet spot and I would have to move a few pieces and get one...let’s pray it doesn’t happen...lol...
I concur. I have the 214270 (mkII), and the proportion are somewhat off. At 37.5 or 38mm, it would be much, much better. Talking about proportion, the one model that is close to perfection is the new Datejust 36.
I hope opportunities like this keep popping up for you Adrian, the resulting content is excellent! 🙏 Wondering why none of them were ticking though? The crowns didn't appear to be pulled out
ugabrew I’m only assuming mate, I don’t know for certain. TGV has gotten an awful lot of hate recently after he joined WatchBox and he’s bought a solid gold president, so I’m 2+2ing here 🤣
Bark and Jack haha definitely. This was at an AD with a used section but the watch had just been sat in their safe, doesn’t look like it was actually ever sold. 🙄
@@hello835gamingtube I've heard stories of Rolex ADs selling watches to "clients" who sell them back to the AD so the AD can then sell them at the pre-owned premium. Sneaky gits.
You want Explorer predictions? Okay here’s one: Rolex expands the range to three versions - - large (similar to existing model), midsize, and petite. This would be the same strategy as with the Yacht-master. In subsequent years, new variations of metals and straps might appear. Neat, eh? 😜
Not sure I u/stand, Rolex advertises on most of the pro sporting events, golf , tennis etc, but one can’t walk into your local AD and purchase a piece of your choice.. I can go to my local dealer and order the merc benz of my choice, what sort of game is this they play?
I genuinely still think it is AD specific. If your AD is central London then you haven’t a hope in hell compared to the guy who’s AD is in Chester. Case in point, there are fellas now on TRF who have the new BLNR with no prior purchases, who just so happen to be local to small town dealers. .... Helps if your dealer likes you as a person also!
My guess is that while Explorers aren't exactly sitting in the showroom case either, you can still get them relatively easily. I'd like a new 36mm Explorer I release as well, but doubt that happens anytime soon.
Always so interested in those "dummy" watches, notice how every watch is the exact same date and time (to the second) as the others. Like, how do they make them the same weight with no movement in them? Is there a movement in them, if companies make specific dummy watches for sales events/meetings, are the gold ones really gold? And what happens to them after they have served there purpose? Do they get a movement put in and put into stock or....? So many questions!
2021 is the 50th anniversary of the Explorer II. They'll issue a piece to commemorate that event for sure. As for Basel 2020 maybe a white dial Explorer I ?
Ok everything was cool. But what about the grey market? Are the dealers selling hot watches to resellers with a little premium (or because they buy the ones that no one wants) so that they can sell them with a big premium or not?
Great video Adrian. I like your attempt at being diplomatic regarding the stance that Rolex has taken regarding the production and distribution of their watches. There wasn’t any really new conclusive information here but it was still somehow good to hear someone who had sat with the head of Rolex UK sharing and confirming things that many of us already knew or at least believed. Love your content...and so do 50k subscribers! Well done 👍🏾
Great video, Adrian! I have a black dial Explorer II 42mm and love it. The watches in the Explorer line are among the few Rolexes that don't scream "Rolex!" on one's wrist which is why I like them. A new Explorer line fills me with excitement! Since you mentioned Omega, I have to say that, to me in my opinion, the understatement of an Omega watch and the availability of almost every model in their catalogue makes Omega the more likeable brand.
My AD said they will not be seeing an Explorer for at least a year which means they are going to change something. I think they are going to put the new movement in the explorer like the GMT and launch a 36 mm (wish list!!).
Really interesting video, very jealous! I’ve got to say that yacht master actually looks awesome and not as big as I was expecting! I really want a gold president too, to only wear with jeans and a T-shirt 😂
New range of explorers definitely on the cards, them exp2’s then likely to steadily increase in value - better find one soon I’m thinking 🤔. Great content as always 👍🏻
Great video Adrian. You're becoming a "real" journalist 😀. On the explorer two theories. 1. Trying to spread their demand. A lot of people, most really, can only afford one waitlist watch. 2. Some update in the wind.
Not So Obvious Watches. Good theories. I suspect it may be theory 1, because even though it’s a popular model that’s not exactly easy to get, it’s not as hyped as some of their other pieces, like the Sub, so they might be trying to build a little more hype for other core models.
Adrian, I think the Explorer 2 will be updated next. The 214270 was just up sized and any other changes to that model wouldn't make it feel like an Explorer. I love my 214270! Get well soon!
@@marcusnns, I'm not "totally wrong". One of the more noticeable changes to that reference number is the larger size. While you are correct in saying that the size isn't the only change to it, it is one of the more immediately noticeable change at first glance. I do agree with you though. There are a few more changes when compared to the previous version like the improved movement, hands (longer and they stretch out to the minute track like they are supposed to) and a few others depending on which Explorer the 214270 is being compared to, however, I think you get the point I'm trying to make.
I'm seeing that blue YM in a few of your vids! I'm surprised you didn't go for one, given their relative good value on the used market. Having said that, there has been a recent slight increase I think. All things considered, it's still an underrated watch IMHO. Interesting video Adrian, I'm not jealous at all! Hope you get over the flu, I had it for weeks too. Cheers.
So 5 years ago i could see Rolex sports models in AD windows. What has changed? Are emerging markets hoovering up stock causing the current drip feed in europe based on Rolex keeping production constant?
My guess is that they are going to introduce variations that haven't existed before including some color variations. Possibly internal improvements as well etc.
I just got into Rolex because I tried one on and fell in love with it. I went into a AD about 45 minutes away from me and I placed an order for the gold/stainless sky dweller. he told me id have it within the year, so a few days ago I sent him a text to check in and also ask him about the sky dweller with the blue dial and he said it would be years because he has people who spend 100 grand and he can't even get them the watch, he said it very snobby, I talked to another AD and he was very optimistic about it saying to come in and build a relationship and that he's got clients way harder to find watches within a year so It all just depends, at this point im considering cancelling my order and going with the optimistic person because he was much nicer, but ill burn my bridge for sure If I cancel with the first guy... what do u think?
As many have said, a 36mm explorer would be a winner. If they released one in a similar style to the current explorer 1 but with a date I'd be all over that.

Absolutely. That exact video is in the pipeline. 👍🏻
Congratulations for hitting the big 50k. I can remember you getting to 10k.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much buddy 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Damn, that meteorite dial looks sooooooo good!
You're one of the best watch youtubers out there. No bias and no bs. Keep it up!🔥
Chris Wilson thanks Chris. 🍻
Congrats on 50 k subs , I have been with you literally from day one .

Hi All,
Maybe I have been lucky.
Simples!"
Don't crowd the forums asking what one you should get on basis of worth, value, appreciation, forum views - buy what you want/makes you happy!
Wow Adrian very excited for you, it always makes me really happy to hear opportunities meet creators I've followed for a while.
So the question is: Do you buy a GMT master or a black bay with a navitimer and a speedmaster pro?
Love the jab at the rat lol
Who's the rat? Archie Luxury??
@@JustClapIt TGV
Did anything happen between them? I don't watch TGV at all
Absolutely! Very nicely done.
The only rat is Paul Pluta. The biggest fake on UA-cam. How are you liking his borrowed watches, from Sydney Watch Exchange?
I predict a 50 yr Explorer II update in 2021. That said, I couldn’t wait, bought one. Love it.
@leicanoct already over priced. It's all the hype surrounding rolex. Alot will lose money buying high on grey market
@leicanoct I also own two rolex. Both bought from ad. All the hype now is silly and out of hand.
@leicanoct I am with you on this.
Rolex's best marketing team is the world, everyone knows them and everyone wants one. It's like a BMW or Merc, Aston Martin makes "better" cars but most people's grails is buying a robust German Mid Tier car, which is what Rolex is to the watch world.
@@Jan-mw1wf I agree. I have a Mercedes and two Rolex. Would love a patek or Aston Martin though!!
6:15 a watch dial made from an actual meteorite is so unbelievably cool.
Lol, I Saw That Double Clip Around 3:40. Get Well Adrian!
Really sorry about that mess up. I should have given it a full run through.
@@edwilkes4694 Precisely! 😂
The price in the USA is $5,677 at the AD which is £4,470
The Explorer retails at £5,000 now in the UK after the price rises last October. It used to be £4,800 prior to this.
This is one of the only definitive evidence i've seen regarding Rolex's response to the current problems. Good work.
Explorer is being pushed likely because the Explorer II doesn't have a ceramic bezel yet, so that's what might be coming in Basel 2020?
My AD in Dallas, TX told me two days ago that they will no longer be carrying Rolex the brand as Rolex the company is opening a boutique just down the road. There are two other ADs nearby and one of them has a separate Rolex boutique attached... not clear what their future holds.
Great video Adrian. Lovely reference at 7:35 - a very British way of saying it. Wonderful :-)
Haha. Thanks mate 👍🏻
Found a new sea dweller 44 at an AD today should i buy? Can't make my mind up value wise. They don't seem to hold for the new ones.
Just before Baselworld 2020:
- "Hey, what should we do with the Explorer?"
- "Maybe we can bring down the 2 to 40mm from the huge 42mm?"
- "Hm, maybe but no..."
- "Maybe we can bring down the 1 to 36mm from 39 which is still too big compared to the original?"
- "Hm, nope..."
- "Ok: Jubilee bracelet on both?"
- "Yeah for it!"
Haha. You’re probably right. Although I wouldn’t mind the jubilee on the explorer.
Bark and Jack there you go, sold! 😂
Problem is 42 mm isn't huge for an awful lot of blokes 40 mm looks like a lil girls watch on my arm so maybe both sizes
Buy an Omega, or even better, a Grand Seiko. Superior quality, and you can actually get one.
🤣 oh so sorry, I’ll just throw my plans for a Rolex in the garbage and buy an omega just because you say so. Oh wait, I’ve had both, and can’t say I agree at all.
@@HH60gPaveHawk hahaha wut
More color was added to the Air King. Maybe they will go that direction? It would be nice to see a 37mm option
Thanks for sharing your insights! Looked like a quite nice event :)
I want a 36 and 39mm Explorer with an updated movement, and both a white and a black dial with glide lock. Would be dope.
Yes! A white dial 36mm explorer with an updated movement and glide lock would be the dream!
Yes for white dial.👍
They’re still (December 2020) pushing the polar explorer! Was in first page spread of the economist a few times this year. I hope they update the watch rather than discontinue the range.
Explorer is basically the only steel sport model you can buy with short wait
Not only, airKing and Migaus are even easier...
@Some Phaggot Agreed. Funny, when you think that at one point the milgaus green dial was a waiting list, retailing for almost twice its value... Times have changed.
"(Omega) want everyone to have an Omega on their wrist, Rolex do what they want to do and they don't need our input" Sounds like Omega is the company I'd rather buy from...
why?... You like being told what to do like a little bitch?
So, tldr; same shit as usual, empty decorated trays in AD, keep on waiting,
got it.
Cheers 😁✌️
Exactly, or event worse. Don't bother waiting.
Love the the gold day date. Does make you feel powerful.
Naaa... Going to the gym makes Ya feel powerful! 🏋️
Wondering why none of them were ticking though? The crowns didn't appear to be pulled out
Me too. I love free food 👍🏻
@@BarkandJack you replied before my edit whoops! Shed some light on the dead hands? 😂😇
@@lukefromtonight Haha, sorry. Yeah all the watches were dummies, no movements inside.

I rock a Rolex II that I purchased in cash when I was 22 years old. Rarely a day goes by in 27 years when it’s not on my wrist!
Thinly veiled dig at TGV “recent events have made the solid gold president slightly less cool” 😂😂
I was wondering what he meant. Is that definitely what it was? Why would he care if TGV got one?
ugabrew I’m only assuming mate, I don’t know for certain. TGV has gotten an awful lot of hate recently after he joined WatchBox and he’s bought a solid gold president, so I’m 2+2ing here 🤣
Used Batman’s are touching £15k right now. Very tempted to go grey
It's crazy, isn't it!
Just keep in mind that once the recession hits that BLNR will be worth about 10-20% below msrp.
Noob watch enthusiast here just found your channel and subscribed thanks for the info!
Thanks a lot for subbing mate. 👍🏻
You want Explorer predictions? Okay here’s one: Rolex expands the range to three versions - - large (similar to existing model), midsize, and petite. This would be the same strategy as with the Yacht-master. In subsequent years, new variations of metals and straps might appear. Neat, eh? 😜
I love the meteorite dail!!!I
Not sure if it exist but it would fit in an Explorer2 the best. This would complete it :-)
Not sure I u/stand, Rolex advertises on most of the pro sporting events, golf , tennis etc, but one can’t walk into your local AD and purchase a piece of your choice.. I can go to my local dealer and order the merc benz of my choice, what sort of game is this they play?
Love my Explorer. Would like one with a white dial and/or a cyclops. 👍
"Had lunch with Rolex, food was good." Epic...
Looks like fun. What are the watches not running? 2:53 - those shoes tell me I don't need a Rolex!
Thank you for bringing us along. What recent events have made the President not as cool?

My guess is that while Explorers aren't exactly sitting in the showroom case either, you can still get them relatively easily.
I'd like a new 36mm Explorer I release as well, but doubt that happens anytime soon.
WI Watch Guy 36mm is lady's size
Thinking of the whole explorer theme, I got my hands on the 08 edition of the rolex magazine last summer and it was all about the Explorer range
No, your right. Having that all gold Day Date does give you a sense of power. I've had one and felt the same feeling of power. It's indescribable.
As loved by Jimmy Savile.
Incredibly insightful update Adrian - thanks very much. Given what you say about wait lists, I guess I will forever remain at the lower end 🤔
Why were the watches not running? Do they fix display models at 10:10 for aesthetics?
Makes sense to launch new explorers - it is bread and butter Rolex, it is the watch that makes Rolex. If I was to buy a Rolex it would be an Explorer.
The Rolex Explorer 39mm is the best Sport Rolex. I just hope they make more sport watches with 39 mm case ...
I really want a gold president too, to only wear with jeans and a T-shirt 😂
clockbait the gold president felt awesome! It really made me want one too. It’s a classy fuck your watch. Haha.
Bark and Jack ‘although recent events have made it slightly less cool’ - fucking brilliant hahaha
New range of explorers definitely on the cards, them exp2’s then likely to steadily increase in value - better find one soon I’m thinking 🤔. Great content as always 👍🏻
JIL WATCHES just put deposit on the ‘99 white dial Ex II today
Adrian: Now that the new Explorer 1's are out, can you make a reflection video on this video knowing what you know now about the Explorer range?
Could they make a 36mm Explorer again? That would be awesome!
Maybe for those with spaghetti arms. 36mm looks like a children's watch. Too large watches are equally ridiculous.
The Explorer is my dream watch. The classic, finest available. Hope they don't mess with a classic. Hope to own one some day.
I tried one on in watchfinder today, was going to be my target towards the end of the year. It wore very nicely but I was slightly underwhelmed.
I know what you mean. It is a very basic, no frills watch, understated quality.@@hammalamiri12

As many have said, a 36mm explorer would be a winner. If they released one in a similar style to the current explorer 1 but with a date I'd be all over that.
