How To Fly an RNAV/RNP Approach using NAV/FPA - FlyByWire A320 NX | MSFS 2020

  • With the Approach Mode of the A320NX not currently functioning for a RNAV/RNP approach, this video shows you how to perform the approach using FPA (Flight Path Angle) mode instead. This video also shows you the new V/DEV (brick) which works a like a Glideslope indicator.

    As you are flying Managed NAV with Selected FPA you should use the LNAV minima not the LNAV/VNAV minima (520). This is for the fully managed approach, using the APPR button. The 'brick' is nice but you should use the distance altitude check from the chart to monitor your profile. Remember to set your Missed Approach alt. Keep it up.

      Thank you for your message. This video is just to show a workaround for the inop APPR mode function. A full, more detailed proceedure video for this will be available soon in the Real World Proceedures tutorial series.

    I have probably nearly 1000 hours in this plane in various different states and I never knew about the fpa mode. That's so much easier for descents than using v/s and having to multiplying my GS by 5. Cheers!

    Thanks a lot for this great tutorial, I tried it with yesterday's A32NX DEV version for St. Maarten (TNCM) and it worked almost perfectly, with one exception, the green V/DEV brick didn't come down for whatever reason.

    Thanks for another very informative tutorial - great content and presentation style - top marks all round, another 'Like' from me. I have watched a few videos covering this subject and I think this is by far the best one out there. I watched this video a few times and made some notes before attempting to put what I have learned into practice using FBW A32NX on RNAV 07C EDDF (-3 deg) and you'll be pleased to hear that everything went to plan. That's it now, parking the ILS's for a while to practise RNAV's now that you have gifted me with the confidence to tackle something different.

    Why do we need to remove the FD after disconnecting the AP?

    • @barriedrew
      @barriedrew 3 роки тому +1

      To avoid any autopilot commands from distracting your concentration on the bird flying the required attitude. Keep displays to a minimum and if you select the FD use it. If you don't switch it off. Confusing otherwise.

    Awesome tutorial and got this to work for me on the first try! The only exception is that I didn’t get the green brick (vertical descent). Any reason why? I’m in the flybywire, also in track fpa mode, past the final approach fix descending at -3 degrees. I wasn’t too high because it put me right on track to land in the touchdown zone so curious if maybe the brick isn’t coded to show up currently for some reason?

    • @Easyjetsimpilot

      You only turn them off when you turn off the Autopilot and are in FPA mode. This is to ensure the Autothrust remains in SPEED mode.

    My approach button no longer work (For RNAV) (FlybyWire)(A320) when approaching runway. It works on ILS mode but not RNAV. RNAV does work with the regular Microsoft a320. It used to work every time, but maybe FLYBYWIRE changed the way RNAV have to be setup? Yes. I do follow navigraph charts for the right RNAV approach altitud.

    Nice video, but quite a few errors (MDA, early stabilised app, procedure…etc,etc).

    • @Easyjetsimpilot
      @Easyjetsimpilot  Рік тому

      You can fly RNAV approach using a decelerated approach without issue. There are some circumstances where an early stabalised approach is called for (ie when the FAF is only a few miles from touchdown) but different airlines also have SOPs for this in their airport briefs.

    • @prc6608
      @prc6608 Рік тому

      @@Easyjetsimpilot not correct: a decelerated approach can only be flow when it’s fully managed.

    • @Easyjetsimpilot
      @Easyjetsimpilot  Рік тому

      @@prc6608 unfortunately this is a limitation of the sim, as the FBW cannot do this yet. However, we can in the Fenix A320.

    I've tried FPA a few times w/-3 degrees and it works, but there is a problem. If my FAF is 2000, and I have 2000 ft set, when I engage FPA, it will not descend below 2000 until I dial the altitude down to the MDA or so...500' roughly. Any ideas why?

    • @Easyjetsimpilot
      @Easyjetsimpilot  Рік тому

      You need to pull the V/S dial to command the descent (assuming your in the FBW or the Fenix mod)

  • @CaptHawkeye
    @CaptHawkeye 2 роки тому

    Is this still valid? Tried this technique today at KLGA RWY 31, and it was a disaster. At 1700 ft, as soon as I got to ZARID, I set the LPA to -3.1, and instead of descending, the place went nose up and started accelerating very quickly. I had to shut off AP and use the PAPI and hand fly it.
