There are many ways to approach camp assault. If you're going to take the time to prepare mortars, you should also build a wooden barracks, defensive positions, and traps or even turrets (powered by a fueled genny or pre-charged battery). Your colonists will get a good night's rest before the big fight, then afterwards, the barracks becomes a triage center. Or you can just Rambo it with a vanguard of ~50 chickens.
Oh, you thought I was joking? Chickens are like egg machine guns, they breed so fast. It's easy to amass dozens of them in a short time. Using a horde of them to soak bullets in a raid is an absolutely legit strategy. Two hidden bonuses: you can use "CHICKEN ATTACK!" as a battle cry. And after wiping out the raiders it's "winner winner, chicken dinner!"
I had my boars breeding for 1-2 years and I ended up with around 800 of them, while selling as many as possible whenever I had a chance and every attack at lest 40 of them died. They breed like crazy, I had to kill them off becose my FPS were droping like hell when there were over 800 boars + my pops + alpacas, elephants and other shit I breed. But when I let my boars free in a gunfight they take all the fire, my pops dont even need cover as all the enemies are hitting the boars, friendy fire kills more boars than enemy though :D
I also breed rats in my mountain, then when all hell gets loose I unleash my horde upon the enemy, they're swift, hard to hit, and pack a good punch, makes for a good shock infantry then i can then finish the remaining troops using my colonists
As a tip to people using mortars, never let your colonists auto-aim with them. You are almost guaranteed to miss every time because they target the center of a object, and mortars accuracy is based on a forced chance to miss a certain number of tiles from the center you aimed at. You're better off aiming for something you want to hit to be in the outer rim of the mortars impact reticle
Good approach but you should prepare a basic defense of wood and sandbag (or rocks) to not loose a colonist on the assault while mortars are missings ==¤¤==¤¤==¤¤==
At least I know what to expect when I see mortar. Quiet the distance, I can actually mow em down if whoever raid me forgot to prepare counter for shock trooper.
How do you manage to build up your mortars? When I land with my dropods on the edge of an enemy location they attack me immediatly. How can I sneak up and build up everything without being attacked?
I cant tell you how they are intended to be used, but the way i use them is have 4-5 mortars aiming at the same spot, even if some miss the concentrated fire will guarantee a few hits land, but if i get a colony of around 35 pawns i usually have 8-10 mortars on defense This guy also made the mistake of letting the pawns auto target, in order to get the best chance to have your shells land, you need to manually aim the mortars for your pawns.
The mortars in Rimworld are best used if you have a large amount of them (6-10) firing at the same time and target using HE, or using a couple loaded with incendiary rounds. HE volleys are good against mech clusters or to counter enemy mortars on defense, and incendiary’s are good on offense.

You may laugh but 50 chickens could be OP. Just ask four of my colonists who were left to die in the wilderness by a man-hunting pack of 36 hares.

That wasnt worth it, you lost 1 colonist for some food they had stored...
You're right, I just tested this game opportunity.
i lose 5 for 3
I got a bunch of my guys scars for an assault rifle, a turret and dead mans armor. And a prisoner. Before I unlocked assault rifles or turrets.
2 colonists RIP
Actually he lost 2 colonists

Taste of their own medecine, so satisfying 👌🏼
True
It's been 48 years. we still didn't hit a single mortar shell. Send help, we ran out of supplies the first year of the assault.
With Combat Extended it's completely different, those shells would have killed the enemies.
@skorn Yes, agree.
CE sucks. So do all their fanboys
With ce you would have used less than half the people equiped with assault rifles behind cover.

I'd have used a few incendiaries to set their base ablaze, keeps them busy putting out the fire and burns them a bit.
Did this one time with antigrain warhead and destroyed their base ._.

You did good, but why the mortars 🤣
Should've brought incendiary shells.
Mortars would be good in a volley, half HE and other incindeary. Like 10 mortars bombarding their base would be OP
The rimworld katyusha rocket mod should be a thing.

Try to reach them on foot
Not terribly exciting

How the flake are ur colonist not having minor break risks
Shameless mod recommendation - "Mortar Accuracy". Accuracy improves with Intellectual and/or Shooting skill.
Mortars seem really inaccurate. Are they intended to take out enemy targets, swarms, defenses, or larger structures (like power generating systems)?

If you use incendiary shells, it is also extremely effective at taking out bases or swarms of enemies

I hate how they just let it happen, luckily they are going to be fixing this soon
i dont think you watched the hole video bruh
Mortars suck for a tiny base like this.
That Guy exactly
how the fuck do you even deploy mortars in Raids?
Painful to watch this slogfest, use a mod to create squads for combat!
Not worth it...
