I love Head-On, it makes me feel better when I get mad at any other Jaffe game I play I wish they made more games on PSP/Vita using this basis cause it could've been a very big hit continuing the series
Head-On is one of those rare times when we glimpse into an alternate universe, and see what TM3 would have looked like if it stayed with the original creators. Would things have turned out better if this was TM3? I don't know. There are a lot of good ideas here, and it's really nice seeing characters from the first two games return, but there are a lot of questionable design choices too. Maybe they could have ironed out a lot of the kinks by TM4. However, Head-On isn't totally a lost cause. A lot of gripes with the game could (theoretically) be solved with a fan patch. Heck, just changing some numbers around to make the cars feel different would do wonders by itself.
Regarding bosses, I noticed tower tooth is way more aggressive in the psp version. The lightning attack throws sweet tooth cones at you from the top head so it deals way more damage than the ps2 version. Don't know why they made him easier
I will say this technically Twisted Metal Head On was the first twisted metal game I played officially but I've heard of twisted metal beforehand (I tried to beg my dad for TM3 but yeah my dad was a huge Christian and basically said no cause of the cover art of the game) but my first exposure to TM technically was Head on since it was 1 of my first PSP games, and I played vigilante 8 and 2nd offense before that but yeah the soundtrack for head on is still a really good banger soundtrack to this day. But yeah I do know there's some flaws since I'm taking off the rose tinted glasses. Honestly I'm glad you mentioned the mini-games like they're nice for extra lives but man some of them were annoying when I was younger especially the one where u had to go through 3 laps and not get hit by the f1 cars going backwards (that one especially made me mad when I was younger) but I pretty much agree with this video without the nostalgia glasses on but only thing is I liked the powerups since like you said in your video, it was nice when to have especially you had to go to school or get ready etc.

I never knew that. 11:01: I will say that the speed feeling samey is due to having so much turbo from the turbo upgrade. If you drive around without turbo, you can feel the speed difference between vehicles. 14:37: I wouldn't say he's difficult, just insanely tedious. His pathing is so busted he can barely drive properly if you stand far away from him and spam homing missiles.
You can have 2 of the same characters in deathmatch mode Tower Tooth is difficult without power ups is what I meant, but YES he is super tedious. Like Piecemeal in Small Brawl
I'll never hate Twistes Metal: Head-On, as the PSP version was my first ever TM game, and I played the crap out of that (not online sadly). Those were some great memories. That being said, its biggest weakness is its lack of difficulty. While the core gameplay is fantastic, It's just way to easy compared to other entries thanks to the upgrades and lackluster AI, and the PS2 version is worse since there is no damage falloff for the remote bomb and napalm. I also HATE the minigames, and if they were optional I wouldn't mind, but the fact you need to complete them to unlock vehicles and maps is just asinine. I also think this game was so close to having the perfect roster. Had Darkside and/or Minion appeared, it would have been perfect, the best roster in the whole series. I do like Cousin Eddy, but like Trapper, he feels like an underwhelming Minion replacement. I also LOVE Dark Tooth in this game, his design is badass and he was so fun to play. Tower Tooth is Tedious AF and the fact you can only play as him in one arena (which isn't even his boss arena) is lame. Overall I do like this game and love the fact it got me into Twisted Metal, but there are other entries I would rather play (Black and Small Brawl especially)

Then later on I got TM Black and grew to love it's gameplay and feel more. Head On is still an alright game, though trying to go back to it just didn't feel the same and I can see why people don't like it as much.

They kept what was good about TM2, but updated the graphics, and fixed the awful physics and cheating AI. That said, I see what you mean about it being bland; perhaps they fixed the physics *too well* and the perfect control extinguishes the sense of danger? I hate the minigames more than you do. They _are_ forced on you, if you want to unlock all the characters, which of course you do. They were frustrating, not fun in the slightest, and have nothing to do with car combat. They felt tacked on because they didn't think the actual game was enough. The only saving grace was that once I beat them all, I never had to deal with them again. The only take here I don't get is about the difficulty. If you think the game is too easy, you can play with ATV; I'm pretty sure that's why they included such an underpowered vehicle in the first place. Also, Tower Tooth is easy. He's so huge that you can pick him apart from across the map long before the health pickups regenerate, and if you do mess up and get hit, it doesn't even do that much damage. If anything, they should have made Dark Tooth and Tower Tooth's weapons more devastating, so it felt like there were actual stakes if you got careless.
Ngl, it was nice not having a Grasshopper which was complete trash lol. Though the look of the vehicle was much better in TM2. Another problem which contributes to the "samey" issue is alot of the cars look the same, they all have this uniform shape. Which I'm willing to bet is also a product of the PSP. Also a controversial take, i think Head-On gave us the best itteration of Thumper. Not so much in power, or the driver itself. I love the little detail in the special, of the car lifting when its selected.
I just don't get the collective twisted metal fan mentality that 2 is the best game when its gameplay is terrible and even if the story and flavor of it is good and fun gameplay is what you are interacting with 90% of the time
I really love this game. As a true continuation of 1 and 2. But I think the roster is TOO much the same as 2. It missed Yellow Jacked and Darkside (wich could have being the boss instead of Uncle). And at least 2 new characters beside Uncle (ATV is not even a character, it's a add for Uncle).
When I was real young this the psp version of this game was the only tm game I grew up with. So naturally I'm a little biased but last year I played the other tm games for the first time. And I still enjoy playing this game out of the others today but I am aware of the flaws, the main ones being the difficulty on hard is tm2 and tmb's easy difficulty and the fact that compared to the others in the series all the vehicles feel the same. And while I may not agree with your other opinions on it being soulless, I still have a good time with it and I think this is a W review. 👍

I think the upgrades could have worked if it was more like Vigilante 8 2nd Offense where the upgrades were handled a lot better (in my opinion).
