I 100% agree, this game requires about as much time as a D&D campaign. If you are not willing to invest it’s probably a 7.5. If you are willing to make this “your and your groups game” it very likely could climb to a 9 or so.

Really great review and agree with nearly everyone's points. The game is dense and heavy that will feel frustrating if you only play it once in a while. If however you dedicate the time to it, there is a chance Aeons Trespass will be the best campaign game you've ever played.
I played it solo with permanent setup and it truly meets all my expectations. I wouldn't play with more than 2 players honestly because of all the decision making and titan losses.
I'm starting cycle 3 now and the journey I've been through up to this point is incredible and can't wait to see how it concludes.

To Camilla's point about player elimination, I think many will find that 2 players is where this game shines, with each player piloting 2 titans. This also helps with rules overhead/retention, and simply getting through the thing from a time perspective. A wild gaming experiment. I'm glad it exists.

    • @Rodfather_Prime

I’m with you, I think two players would be the spot. Solo is too much upkeep, 4 players causes player elimination and constant vigilance to make sure everyone is grasping the rules.

Most of this style of game where the player unit count is set at a fixed number work best with 1 or 2 less players than the total number of units. 2-3 Player always has been the optimal group size for boss battlers with long campaigns.

Played this three times now at 4p count at around 10+ hours. As they said, combat is lucky, frustrating, and brutal as well as repetitive - Hekaton 3x, Minotaur-thing 2x. A typical turn is try to reach the enemy, try to hit the enemy, then try to wound the enemy, fail more often than not. And if you fail, the enemy often pounds you across the arena. Sometimes even when you HIT them, you still get countered and knocked around. So many turns where I got knocked down or knocked back so far that I literally could do nothing but stand up or move towards them and that was it. Wait for 10 minutes for my next turn, rinse and repeat. Nothing like spending an hour blocked by maze Tetris pieces, getting to attack twice and never landing a single blow. I didn't find the exploration to be satisfying either. The story and world is unique and well-written to be fair, but an exploration phase is check off box, move to new tile, might be something there, might not. Draw a few rando cards to see what weird materials you get, lose some more reputation (so many of the choices are 'bad or worse' and the rewards make no sense), maybe get some weird mnenos card that may or may not randomly level up. The tech tree is (too) massive but largely invisible and clunky and only slightly interesting so far. The whole thing is so much randomness between dice rolls and card draws and if I have to play any game for 20+ hours before it might get good, not for me, sorry. Trying to figure out the best way to break it to my buddy who bought the darned thing that I'm out.

    • @adam551982
      @adam551982 Рік тому +4

Absolutely disagree. The battles are laegely a skill game. Yes theres rng from the dice, but you can indeed get good and destroy the primordials at early levels if you know what youre doing.

It's a low luck game if you use some brain. Have the right gear and tactics, almost auto win. Have neither, yea I can see that you need to win the lotto
Yea there a lot of down time if you played at 4 players. Worse if you die or using the wrong strategy. Most battles isnt run up and swing. people play this solo or at 2 players.
There isn't much to exploration 10 hours in, but it does grow over time

This game has some of the biggest moments (highs and lows) of any game I have ever played. You really feel, especially at the start, that you are embarking on an odyssey and that all odds are against you. The brilliance of the combat system is that every battle feels epic and important. You will win battles that you never thought possible, and lose battles disastrously. It is all part of the epic story that unfolds before you as you play the game. It is a different type of game; you just have to be willing to strap in and go along for the ride. Yes, it is extremely complicated (and I agree, to some extent needlessly). But Tom is right: with the investment, there is a massive payoff. I will say that I play this solo, and it is great solo. The thought of finding anyone else committed enough to go through the whole journey with me is laughable. It is just too much. So I get why Camila and others might not want to invest the time. But I think it is fairer to recognize that while this may not be a game with mass appeal, it is probably the best campaign boss battler out there, and given the competition in that space (KDM and Oathsworn, I’m looking at you) that it saying something.

I think it's the kind of game you'll play solo. It feels like a solo RPG tabletop game from what I saw about it and it's why I'm looking for a late pledge (I will have to find a way to extend my table).
I don't see myself introducing this kind of game to my friend as I did with Gloomhaven or too many bones. It's a big commitment and I think it's why on bgg the top player rating is 1 and 2 players.
But amazing from what I saw and I need to try the tabletop simulator demo before deciding if I late pledge or not.

  • @jasonpadgett1333

One thing worth adding: the game is best at 1-2 players. As Tom suggested, it really shines solo, and the overhead of playing four Titans is not too much. Four is a definite no-no. And three is doable, but pushing your luck with player elimination. Would love to see a Mike solo review of this one (or a look back from Tom in a year if he does play it solo). Also love imagining a Zee review of this game because he would absolutely hate it, and would be hilarious telling us how much he hates it!😂

Something that wasn't mentioned here was how the player choices drive the story and have huge impact on how this plays out. comparisons with Oathsworn don't really do either game justice. My Oathsworn experiance is the story is on rails, and no matter what choice i make I still fight the same monster at the same time, just with a different variation of tokens. ATO Im getting chased and don't want to get caught, or have my prized titan dispatched, I worry about what territory im in depending if im friends or enemies with that faction, what would have happened if i was nice to that last NPC, - its not just a different token, its a whole different story arc that changes on your decision here. Definitely a commitment time wise, but for me the story is very addictive, just like a great book.

  • @dashumankapital
    @dashumankapital Рік тому +7

I can see their points, but at the same time even in cycle 1 the whole story and fighting and your control about the fights changes (you can increase hit probabilities a lot with new gear and you need to play a bit with the triskelion parameters) a lot. Also the primordials change a lot with higher level. (e.g. in the first fights with the Hekaton you would prevent to stand in front of columns, but later on they can prevent you from thrown from the cliff and you can easily stand up with new gear). The story is great (and I don't perceive the story parts as that long) and gives you more space for strategic decisions (in Oathsworn you only get tokens here and there or get wounded or so on)
Oathsworn is also fun and much more accessible, but ATO, once you are hooked, gives you so much more (as Tom said, he thought about it all the time). I finished Cycle 1 solo and will now start cycle 2 with some friends.

Don't get me wrong, the game is really good but I don't think its a good idea to introduce your friends into this massive game straight into cycle 2. They're gonna get crushed not only in battle phase (the primordials act completely different than those found in cycle 1) but also in the voyage/adventure phase (the map is a lot more brutal than that of cycle 1).

Well, actually... they are reasonably well hidden if you're not looking for them, but they do exist (and they're not common, to be fair).
A bit of a shame about the focus on luck mitigation, as you get so many more tools available, but I can understand how the very lack of those tools early (and isn't that a thing, to call "20 hours in" as "early", hah) has an impact, as well.
Overall, I think this was a great review considering the inherent limitations.
I do agree that this is a game which by its very nature will only be appreciated by people that already favor large campaign games and/or boss battlers. Well rated within its niche, but just not something that -can- be really appreciated by the larger portion of the gaming public, and that's completely okay. There are numerous games I wouldn't give a second look at, which occupy the Top 100 list, or are generally loved by the broader community.
We all have our own preferences, and I am pleasantly surprised to see this game rated as well as it was here. I can definitely understand the (ever-increasing) depth of mechanics making this difficult to inconsistently table, but I liked how much the three of you appreciated the story provided.

Aeon Trespass is definitely better if you find the time to play it and even if you do not have so much time it would be worth to invest time into this game.
Oathsworn = like some reviewers mentioned. Good Story but only decisions with no consequences you only get different tokens for your next fight.
Aeon Trespass = on the other hand this really gives you choices that influence your game now and onwards even through other cycles.
That´s a HUGE difference in my opinion.
And sorry rating a game like this before you even got a nymh is too early (i guess i got one after 5-6 hours in one of my campaigns.). I had my first nymph very soon in my campaign, and most of my early fights with monsters where really fair.
Seems like we played different games.....
I can definitely understand the point with setup and bookkeeping. Some people already said this in the past about KDM.

Explaining that you get bonusses if you lose a campaign and that you can get better chances next time.
Explaining that there a quick start rules for the following campaigns, if you want to play one of the campaigns again without playing the one before.
    .....
What i want to say with this is that there is much more to the game that was not mentioned and i don´t know if you have thrown all of that things into your score or if you just said:
"Okay i have invested enough time now, i will just rate it based on what i experienced and not on what the game has to offer in total."

While the story of ATO is awesome, after I’m done, I don’t think there is reason to go back. But the emergent story-telling of KDM means every time I go back, there is something different happening. Not true. Hard to learn and hard to master. Combat is fun and theres def a skill gap to learning how to handle each primordial at different levels. Once you "figure out" the ai decks adn targeting rules, youll start to catch on to best positioning, which gear to use, using distance as an advantage, when to attack to force an ai deck shuffle, when is it a good idea to escalate the deck versus when its best to wait, should i try and hit this upcoming bp card? Should i hit this bp card knowing it will be a miss but this specific titan will leave the appropriate amount of opening or break tokens in the kratos pool greatly increasing the chance of causing a wound. Should i pass on this titans turn to increase the rage on my other titan to swap who controls the priority target token? Should i forego a few attacks to get inside a city to increae my evasion? Theres a smorgasbord of things to do and thats early on. Just wait till you get a bunch of gear and fight nastier beasties. THEN the gake really opens up!

I love how it makes every battle crescendo into these intense make-or-break moments, but it also adds a lot of complexity that leaves KDM’s combat system feeling very smooth and simple by comparison (though no less brutal!).

Your titans are expendable, you have quite a bit of them in stock so losing through titan loss isn't as common as you are making it out to be. Campaign loss can still happen yes but repeating the cycle is still fun because you are not stuck reading the same passage again plus the fights are still fun. This is coming from a guy who spent 150+ hours (fighting the same set of primordials 10-15 times each) in playing cycle 1 twice, one solo and one in a group.

I'm not saying it's not a (relative) KS success. It's not a negative statement, it's just reality. Games that are mostly only available through KS are niche.
Only 8000 persons WORLDWIDE backed "Aeon Trespass: Odyssey", and not many more will have an occasion to play it. And that's, more or less, the same people who backed other big campaign games like KDM.
That's the initial "raison d'être" of the KS system by the way: a way to produce games that are so big, expensive and "niche", that they wouldn't be able to be sold to enough people on retail to become profitable.
On retail, selling only 8000 copies of a game is considered a failure. Most retail games sell 10k to 50k copies. Sell more, and you have a successful game in your hand.
Only a chunk of hobby gamers buy games through crowdfunding (I don't judge, I do it too! ;) ), and yes, people who like the types of games you find on KS will throw a lot of money at them (a lot and directly, so those games are profitable enough for their creators).
But casual gamers (the huge majority) will never even think about paying that much money for a game, and spending that much time on only one big campaign game.
8000 people compared to the number of people who will play a mildly successful retail game (as I said between 10k and 50k copies for most "doing ok" games) are not many. And I'm not even talking about the big retail games: how many more people will play games like Ticket to Ride, 7 Wonders, Splendor, Carcassonne, Kingdomino... at least once in their life?
Yes, KS Campaign games are niche, and Aeon's Trespass seems to be even more demanding than most. Not saying it's a bad one though.
