Agree with all of these and would add don't ever feel guilty about talking about your Kickstarter. So many more people don't know about it than know about it.
That last point was great! Also, I totally think that you should mention about your Kickstarter, that launches on August 3rd, 2022, called Chances Are. 😘
It’s so crazy that this video does not have an absurdly larger view count than what it does. These have been so helpful. My Kickstarter will be launching over the next couple of months for my very first book, and I’m beyond excited for all of it to come to fruition.
Hey matt. I hope you're doing good! We spoke before and I have followed your advice. I finally converted all 4 of my books from RGB to CMYK 😂 they are all sized correctly now too with added bleed space and everything, it was a long process but it feels great have it in a "print ready" format! A massive weight off my mind! So I wanted to say thank you for that! You were a big help in getting me over that hurdle 🙏 Now I'm at the stage of getting it printed and getting it out there, and I'm equally uncertain 😂 I know in a previous video you spoke about a nice UK based printer and I'd kept them in mind leading up to this point. But I'm hitting that uncertainty wall again because... I always intended to self publish the books. So a while ago I brought a batch of isbn numbers. In my mind.. I was going to register them before getting the prints made. But I wanted to ask what your thoughts were on this... I haven't heard you mention isbns 😅 Am I doing the right thing, or Am I just making it harder for myself? Have I wasted money on these isbns or was it a good move? I have never used kick starter before and have always been unsure if it was the right way to go. I thought if I could get my books completed and made without it, then I wouldn't need it. I do understand now that I have missed out on building more of a following there. But I didn't want to be taking people's money until I had something real to give them for it... Needless to say its all a little daunting at this point and I wondered what you'd recommend to me at this point? 🙏
Loving these videos. The thing putting me off using kickstarter is what to do about EUVAT when selling from the UK it sounds like more hassle than it's worth but nobody seems to even mention this? Do you have any info or a link to a video about this if you've already touched on it? Cheers!
@@MattGarveyComics cheers Matt. Maybe it only matters over a certain threshold or something. 🤷♂ I haven't seen any info about it recently but there was a big deal about it a few years ago.
It’s a question for an accountant, which I am totally not 🤪 I can yeah you how to to make a comic, but money matters you need an expert. Maybe even try citizens advice
Do you have any advice about traditional publishing? Cause it seems thier either out of business, not hiring, and or insulting potential customers. I'm trying to find an indie publisher so that I own the rights to what ever I write.
hmmmm, maybe this advice will help... Most publishers other than the big two DO accept submissions, they do open and close them so you have to keep an eye out for when they are open. Companies like Image and Dark horse ALWAYS accept submissions, but you need to have a a comic ready to show and share...which leads on to my next point. You need to have a body of work,... one to show publsihers... two to pitch to publisher and three to learn how to make comics whoc is the most important. it is highly unlikely a publsiher is going to pick up your first comic, because youre still learning. its a craft it takes time to get good at it. Thats why i always tell people to start small. As for the big two, again having a body of work (based on your characters not theirs) is going to help you open doors because you are shoiwng them that you can do the job... plus you need to network and i'm not just talking abouit comic cons. Send physical comics into the bigt to with editors you'd like to work with...NOT all of them. Introduce yourself and show them waht you can do...you never know....thye might right back! its a grind, its a hustle, but you need to show publsihers that you are the BEST! hope it helps...thnaks for watching
@@MattGarveyComics Thanks. So far Ablaze and Antarctic Press haven't answered me back. With Dark Horse I need a team. Boom and IDW aren't currently accepting unsolicited submissions. As soon as I finish Senior high school I join either WSU or full sail and starr writing. I know the genre I want to write. I just need to find a publisher that's hiring. Hey at least I'll get to travel. 🤷
its gonna be REALLY tough for a publisher to take a chance on someone who is unknown with no body of work... it may take you 10-15 years of had work to break into comics if that what you really wanna do. Best thing to do is save your money, start small and make your own comics and show the world you are a writer who should be seen by putting out the best comics you can.

Off topic but can you possibly shed any light on where Screenslurp disappeared to?
