The real issue here, is that the mentality taken doesn't take into account global sales...just NoA. "Oh, it's not going to be the biggest hit possible in North America so why bother" which then hurts the global brand. Which is a recurring issue with NoA, they seem far too caught up in what their subsidiary's perception of what Nintendo is than what Nintendo's perception of Nintendo is. It's lead to localization nightmares, refusals to bring over games, a general disdain for RPGs that are not Mario or Pokémon. NoA just wants Nintendo to be the casual arcade/party game only company...and that was never what Nintendo's identity actually was.
The title is misleading. The comments made by Reggie have nothing to do with the switch and is primarily about operation rainfall and localization. Didn’t he say he was gonna be better about his titles a few weeks back?

Unfortunately no, it still ultimately wasn't because of Operation Rainfall. And it's, just as they said, had no effect on the whole deal to "localizing" Xenoblade 1 into the west. This is all because of one person, and not NOA, it's, you guessed it, Reggie. It was just him who had a problem with Monolith Soft. Look back a little further, and you will find articles and interviews of Reggie's comment on Disaster Day of Crisis. Showcasing more of how it was just him having a problem against Monolith Soft as a studio. Just the way he talks about that game, slamming it, with things such as "it's not worth $50", and calling the voice acting in that game "laughable". Then proceeds saying it would only come to the US, if it sold well in Europe. Something he also made a rule for Xenoblade, and only by those of Europe actually getting that game to sell well enough, did he finally approve of having that game being brought to the US. But with one caveat, it being Game Stop exclusive. You see, it being Game Stop exclusive is terrible, and very indicative of how much faith, or lack of, for Xenoblade 1. Hell, wouldn't even say it's faith, but contempt I guess one could say, he has for Monolith Soft and their games. And it selling out from Game Stop stores is not a good indicator of how much it is liked, is popular, or any of that. Especially when it doesn't get restocked, but again still ultimately was a Game Stop exclusive to begin with. That is just hindering, and limiting the marketing for the games. Yeah, for all the good that Reggie has done for us and Nintendo as a whole, especially marketing campaign for the DS and Wii. He has also made some baffling decisions, such as stopping or messing with most early Nintendo owned Monolith Soft games. But who knows how he was to the studio after Xenoblade 1 came out, and sold out in the US. Maybe he changed his tune, and is willing to give them a chance more and more over time, up until he stepped down. As for the other two games in the fan campaign of wanting it brought to the US. Well, that was just because of the publishers who are the ones responsible of bringing those games over to the US. The petition did nothing really.

Very true thank goodness it sold well other wise it would have stayed as the monado story aka original was going to be called monado and the Klaus trilogy arc would have never existed Because when they made the first game that's pretty much what it was With that said I can't wait for Xenoblade X DE releasing on my birthday month.
I personally think they did already plan localizing at least Xenoblade 1 due to the fact we in Europe got it in august 2011 (NA got it in april 2012). Operation Rainfall began around june 2011 if I remember correctly which, IF I am correct, is an extremely short time for Nintendo to look at the movement and say "yes, I guess we'll crunch localize xenoblade games". It might have affected the American side of the localization, but it seemed to have been planned already at that point by Nintendo of Europe which is probably the reason why Xenoblade was dubbed in British.
I think its more fair to say it helped to gauge future interest in the IP. Given the timeline, its very fair to say that operation rainfall had basically nothing to do with XC1 being localized to EU and by extension NA. Two months to fully translate a game as large as XC1 as well as voice it is really unrealistic (and remember, these games go gold months ahead of release, in reality development on the localized version was done possibly even before operation Rainfall started.)
No, because it was sold well enough in Europe that they then planned to bring it over to the US. Otherwise it would have came out in the same year as it did. It would be about 2 years after it came out of Japan by that point, and there's no good reason for it to have been that long to do so. Also the caveat was that it's localization would have to be handled by Nintendo of Europe, and it end up as a Game Stop exclusive in the US. Reggie did this same thing to Disaster Day of Crisis, where he said they'd only do it on localizing it to the US, if it sold well in Europe. There was not much planning after that. And there never was, because it didn't sell well. What we're seeing here isn't really planning, but rather a bet. With the Rainfall stuff not affecting the outcome of said bet.
@@byronlyons3548 What I'm saying is that it wasn't really operation rainfall that was the reason for it to be released in the west, but rather Nintendo of Europe. That's what I'm saying. So it was already a planned idea by NoE. It's just that NoA was against it.

The most controversial Xenoblade thing is when Xenoblade X was released in Wii U without subtitles. Man, i'm from Chile, speaks more or last english, for me playing a game like that... But X is one of my top 10 games of all time right now, what a franchise.

I dont know if my heart can even take more xeno games at the moment, 3 ripped it out, and then I played xenogears for the 1st time and I've never been this interested in the lore of a game in my life.
Companies spend large amounts of money every year for market research, knowing full well that estimated demand from market research doesn't necessarily translate to sales. I am not buying a single instant that Nintendo saw this huge, spontaneous, voluntary movement from their core audience telling them directly in no-ambiguous terms that they want the games, as at the very least free market research and a solid indication of interest. Of course their final decision was based on cost vs estimated demand. It always is. But there is no way that such an unprecedented grassroot phenomenon didn't contribute to establish the notion that there was enough demand to justify the cost. Reggie probably didn't do the maths himself, so from his perspective it was all about the numbers, but the maths guy in the sales projections team that came up with the numbers cannot have entirely ignored such a clean, clear, significant indication of interest from the target market.
In addition to Operation Rainfall, I'd also say Chuggaconroy also played a big part in getting Xenoblade the recognition it deserves and eventually got Shulk in Smash Bros 4 3DS/Wii U. Another thing worth noting is that Breath of the Wild is the game that ultimately made the Switch into what it is today and inspired other Nintendo IPs to make games far bigger than their predecessors. Which I do agree. But, Xenblade in general is the franchise that paved the way for Breath of the Wild. Monolith is simply the best when it comes to building large scale worlds.
@@sebastianguerrero6617 It's literally true tho. People still call him he heart of the english community even after his missteps. Must have been really important to get that treatment.

Started with XC3 as a gamble, got lucky with a XC2 bargain and currently going through XCDE. I've thoroughly enjoyed my time and plan to dive into XCX in March. A true monolith in the ARPG space, pun very intended! Where do I sign to get more of this?
Reggie's story really doesn't line up with how things actually played out at the time. Sure, there may have been some people at NoA who really wanted to bring Xenoblade over, but I do not believe that there was any serious consideration to localize the game for NA markets or even do the limited release that we got until Operation Rainfall gained notoriety. If it was anything other than a response to the vocal demand then it would have gone down differently. I'm very certain of that.
All it really proves is that corporations aren't going to be moved by simple silly petition. Which is what happened, much to the inflated fans egos dismay. The money talks, the nonsense walks. As Reggie ends up explaining, but for a different game, still the same studio, Disaster Day of Crisis. He says he would consider having the game release to the US, only if it sold well in Europe. Guess what Xenoblade did? The rest of the story tells itself.
It's easy to see that Reggie was trying to save face with that comment, they thought America would'nt care about Xenoblade and they were proven wrong. And I'm sure their very happy that they were wrong these days because it's a million copy seller ip with potential to grow even bigger. Nintendo themselves said their happy with where Xenoblade is right now.
Operation Rainfall is the name of some other story, unrelated, that has to do with people surviving from an alien invasion, odd..... coincidence in some ways.
Honestly, who cares? Everyone already knows the gist. The game sold a good chunk of its units in the US, but surely not because of NoA, they just helped limit its success once it was there...after not even localizing the game in the slightest(They just slapped the exact same gamefile from europe onto the market with no adjustments). The literal only two good things NoA ever did to the series were localizing X with all DLC pre-included and releasing Torna as a digital standalone in the US eShop. Otherwise they were just lazy and unwilling and are most likely also the reason NoE proceeded to localize future projects(Minus DE) into american english rather than british english, which contradicts both the spellings in Xenoblade 1 and the chosen lingo in the script. Screw NoA, they would have been largely superfluous if the Wii was region free without homebrew.
@pennypeach7616 also why i don't buy anime anymore. I used to believe that by buying the dvds and Blu-rays , that it would help boost the odds of getcontinnother season of my favorite anime, but that was just plain wrong. same with videogames.
Don't try to do this with a business history and saying that operation rainfall had an effect it clearly didn't, That movement was targeted in the tendo of America and everything regarding the localization of xenophobia was done by Nintendo of Europe so let's not get things twisted here
Reggie was likely speaking the truth. When it comes to making decisions on release schedules and such, it's not the internet buzz manufacturers listen to, it's the analytics. One solution, before the days when everything was localized, it was common to import games. This was hugely popular, particularly in the 16-bit era, because around 90% of RPGs didn't make it over to the west, or at least past the US. I wouldn't be surprised if most the US sales of RPGs were Europeans importing.
Yes you've proven that point handily - the nagging was mere months before the game came out in English, so obviously, Nintendo already planned to release these games in English. What's the controversy?
Not breaking any ground here in saying this, but man. . . that footage just reminds me how much I prefer the art direction for XC on the Wii. XC: DE does a lot of good almost everywhere else, but I really just have a hard time getting over the change in art direction. It's fine quality but I never really appreciated how it further pushed into its "anime-anime" appearance, if you catch my drift? I get it, XC2 engine and whatever, but it's still not something I'll ever come to prefer lol. Anyway, Operation Rainfall absolutely had an effect - how big of one no one can really say, but to act like it didn't have an effect at all is kind of absurd. The three games part of Operation Rainfall all getting ported here is not just some convenient coincidence, and without it I really don't think we'd have ever seen them come around.
@@enzoforgets9456 Yeah for sure! I own everything but XenoGears (played it, just haven't gotten around to a purchase) so I'm familiar with the history, but that's what makes the change all the more jarring in my book. XC: DE from my perspective, in terms of its visual presentation, was homogenized into looking more like the other games in the series and I don't think that's a good thing (nor was it necessary). Also keep in mind the game would have been called "Monado: Beginning of the World" were it not for Iwata so I'm just saying. . . I'd much rather have had XC: DE preserve and embrace the originals identity - specifically when it comes to the art direction - with a more faithful interpretation. Just to throw it out there, it's something I don't prefer about FFVII Remake / Rebirth either - I still think those games look fantastic but I always imagined them bringing the original concept art style of FFVII to life instead of the more "realistic-anime" look they decided to go with. I also don't prefer Link's Awakening (Switch) to Link's Awakening DX, so I tend to be pretty consistent on stuff like this.
What art direction? The Wii version had none. It's art was dictated by the models, rather than them making the characters models based on an art style. That's not what I would call an art direction. Also it looks more like FF XII, which is not unique at all. And not as charming as you make it out to be.

Got Last Story and Xenoblade when they came out at Gamestop. Still 2 of my favorite rpgs of all time.
I dont know if my heart can even take more xeno games at the moment, 3 ripped it out, and then I played xenogears for the 1st time and I've never been this interested in the lore of a game in my life.
They do listen to fans. I mean look at all the surprise character reveals in smash!!
Hell no, don't give that punk any credit
@@sebastianguerrero6617 It's literally true tho. People still call him he heart of the english community even after his missteps. Must have been really important to get that treatment.
i know this discussion is mostly about xenoblade but i dont think we should just throw operation rainfall under the bus like this because remember NOA didnt even localize the other 2 games a completely different publisher stepped in to help release The Last Story and Pandora's Tower
Started playing Xenoblade in the Wii recently to get excited for X. I've only played it 3DS and Switch so it's interesting to see what's different.
No😊
It's easy to see that Reggie was trying to save face with that comment, they thought America would'nt care about Xenoblade and they were proven wrong. And I'm sure their very happy that they were wrong these days because it's a million copy seller ip with potential to grow even bigger. Nintendo themselves said their happy with where Xenoblade is right now.
I love Reggie, but I don't believe him when he says they were already planning it. Why would they led Xseed publish if that was the case?
I'll take his word over yours.
I have never played X. I 'm really hyped for it tbh
It had a great ending, in terms of revelations but also in terms of a huge cliff hanger, looking forward to seeing the ending elaborated on.
Its 2024, why are this a conversation now?
He needed clicks
@viviorko that's 99% of UA-cam though
@ , you are correct. 👍
It isn't. The real conversation is, when is XB going to get a real combat system?

Very interesting, I think Operation Rainfall definitely contributed a lot.
We want Xenosaga remaster or remake
Can someone give me the TLDR. My adhd is keeping me from understanding anything in this video....
We need a new campaign to get those other two games remastered.
I thought it was because the localization is the worst. Changing names and a lot of things from the original japanese.
What's xenoblade? Never heard of it.
People need to understand that japan gives 2 shits about what the american audience wants. It's pretty much "you get what you get" sort of thing.
Exactly why I don't buy anything from Nintendo. A company who doesn't care about its player base deserves nothing.
@@pennypeach7616 No one cares about their playerbase. Not even Playstation and Xbox.
@pennypeach7616 also why i don't buy anime anymore. I used to believe that by buying the dvds and Blu-rays , that it would help boost the odds of getcontinnother season of my favorite anime, but that was just plain wrong. same with videogames.
I don't buy from Nintendo simply due to their egomania.
So wtf is the "controversy"?
hi OJ
Don't try to do this with a business history and saying that operation rainfall had an effect it clearly didn't, That movement was targeted in the tendo of America and everything regarding the localization of xenophobia was done by Nintendo of Europe so let's not get things twisted here
"Xenophobia"...
If they listen oj where is mother 3? Your bias is showing here…
Fantastic video.

Damn I feel stupid for falling for this clickbait. Unsub lol.
Yes you've proven that point handily - the nagging was mere months before the game came out in English, so obviously, Nintendo already planned to release these games in English. What's the controversy?
it's not a controversy. i don't like the clickbait.
The only xeno game non anime is wii version
Even prior entries to the xenoseries were explicitly anime
@@DKCreo yea i agree it def does make it less uniaue, tho i prefer the change, theres no debate on how its less unique now vs then
What art direction? The Wii version had none. It's art was dictated by the models, rather than them making the characters models based on an art style. That's not what I would call an art direction. Also it looks more like FF XII, which is not unique at all. And not as charming as you make it out to be.
@byronlyons3548 yes, thats called a direction art takes, hence the name
