IF I CAN MAKE COMICS...YOU CAN!
My name is Matt Garvey & I’m a comic writer from the UK.

I know it’s daunting...and I know it’s scary, BUT you can do it!
I’m gonna be showing you (in small bite size videos) my entire comic making process from developing my ideas, to scripting, to finding an artist, to what to do when the art comes back...all the way through to how I sell my comics at comics cons and stores!

How I Made 25 Comics In Just SIX YEARS! [2022]
Mysterious Suspense #1 by Steve Ditto. When I first got this book I thought, "Wow, the writer really made the artist's job tough." ;D
"I don't get out of bed for 5%" - Touker (Dragon's Den)
Also, you just saved me £30 with the printer recommendation!
Well you can spend that on my comics then 😜
Just what I needed today, thx!
No worries matey
Artist here working on my own short stories. Your channel has quickly become my favorite for comics creation advice - I cant remember if I commented on this one before but this is one of the clearest videos I've ever seen on comic short stories plotting. This is after about 5 yeats of investigating the subject. Being American I've never read 2000 AD as its just not in most American comic shops. Based on this video I ordered and began reading Vol 1 of 2000 AD's "Complete Future Shocks." I'm learning a lot reading each one and analyzing the setup and payoff and judging how successful it was or wasn't. Before that I was reading other American anthologies and many stories in them didn't have a good structure that felt satisfying in the end. So thanks for the recommendation!
My pleasure dude and thanks so much for the compliment 💪
Already reported this to UA-cam for assaulting me in my own home with disturbing imagery. Why would you share videos of babies in your channel? Dude, that's messed up 🙈
Ha ha ha I hate you
@@MattGarveyComics I know...
Your supposed to keep the tache
Nope…you’re meant to grow it from scratch 😜
Is it just me, or does the Marvel Method sound like an AWFUL way to make comics? If Stan Lee didn't have the time to write more scripts, he should've hired more writers. He could've given them outlines of what he wanted to happen in each comic, or leave the creative decisions to them. Then, the artists draw the comics based on the full scripts.
I’m not a fan of marvel method. But I think in stans defence there just wants the money to hire more people.
I'm starting with a "magnum opus" but I've actually written and completed plenty of other, much longer things before, so I'm actually finding it quite enjoyable even though the format is different. I'll see what other issues I might run into down the line, but I plan on working page by page as I get the art done (self-publishing. Yes, I know. Expensive.)
Best of luck dude! Rooting for you
Bro, thank you so much! Really helped me. 😭
My pleasure buddy! 😜
He full of shit. Don't published comic book lost everything because guy like hime saying anyone can published a comic book this is not true.
I don’t think I’m full of anything apart from encouragement and helping people make their first comics. Please share your hate somewhere else.
great video!
Cheers dude
Hi Matt, I'm pretty new to your channel but wanted to say that your videos are great! So to comment on this video, I'm an artist and a couple years ago I collaborated with a writer who had never done comics before (they had worked on tv/film scripts) and in their script they would describe multiple things happening at once all the time. I ended drawing many more panels than they expected - they would always tell me "wow you really slowed it down" and they didn't mean it as a bad thing but more that they were just surprised at how when I drew what they described in a short blurb in the script, it wouldn't be one panel but it would end up being a page of panels - they didn't understand at all that each action needed it's own panel. Their script wasn't broken down panel by panel but was written more like a film with a paragraph describing what the character does and then had dialog following like "Character A enters his apartment shutting the door behind him and sets down his keys and picks up his mail and begins tearing it all open" which obviously would have to be drawn in multiple panels. One thing I learned from that experience is that I would definitely prefer a writer/collaborator in the future who actually reads comics because I had to educate this person all the time on how comics work. It was a little frustrating at times. Luckily they were flexible in let me do what needed to be done to get it to work.
That’s a very common story matey. As you know they are very different mediums…well done for overcoming it
Artist here. I appreciate you being blunt about artists needing to be paid. Learning the business of making comics is a difficult process. In my first comic attempts I did the art on a couple sample stories/pitches for writer friends on the verbal agreement of doing something great together running on "pure love" for the medium. Stupid I know. After slaving away for weeks while also working a full time job, in both cases once I was finished the writers abandoned the projects for "life reasons" - not overnight but just being lazy and not pushing the project out and standing behind it. Their drive just fizzled out for various reasons So that left me with pages that I can never really do anything with since the stories are incomplete etc. The amount of frustration I felt was immeasurable. So I learned the hard way not to lift a finger unless I get paid upfront or sign a contract guaranteeing me 1/2 ownership. For most people comics is a low paying endeavor and for an artist it takes years of training to know how to draw well, design characters, know your anatomy, compose a page, know how to use software, etc, etc. I could go on and on. Many writers I've talked with seem clueless about this and look at artists like hiring a plumber- just a means to an end when in reality in comics the artwork and story is intertwined. If a writer comes to me and has an idea for a character and I design it for them going through multiple iterations, I feel I deserve 50% ownership of that character for bringing it to life with my unique sensibilities. To any writer out there wanting to make a comic try to remember that blood sweat and tears goes into making a great book as far as the art goes and respect that as an essential part of the process and pay your artists fairly. I feel that if you dont want to do this its better for you to just write a novel where art is not required.
Skip the business cards: Print out and put on your table a QR code that links to a website to SELL. YOUR. MERCH.
Exactly
If I’m going as a regular guest and I want to get rid of a few slabs can I sell my CGC slabs to the owners of the booths?
I honestly don’t know, matey…some organisers might frown on that, because other people paid to be there. You could go make connections and follow up after if there’s an interest
Good explanation
Cheers dude
This is very similar to the way some writes work in Scrivener using the Save the cat method. Very cool and informative thanks
Never read save the cat, but it’s nice to know I’m doing something right! 😜 Thanks for watching
I have an inquiry please am trying to reprint comic book out of stock via printing company and the problem they do require to set margins and bleeding points before uploading files and honestly I have searched all over the internet to find away to determine the right margins and bleeding points for my comic book the size is 8.5x11 inch and I couldn’t come up with an answer I would appreciate any tips thank you
176mm x 266mm is standard us size which also includes a 3mm bleed for chopping off at the printers. It’s never steered me wrong. Hope it helps
thanks
No worries thanks for watching
Love David Aja's Hawkeye, it really stands out from other comic style. Glad you mentioned.
It’s a great book! Thanks for watching
Great videos matt, think I'll start my 4 page comic then
Awesome dude, thanks so much for watching!
I’m glad I’m going the self publishing route because 50% for just getting my books into stores is just insane lol makes no sense. I enjoy personally communicating directly with comic stores who are excited to sell my books. Including MidTown Comics in NYC. So I’m good with all of that 😂 the gatekeeping days are over
Glad you’re doing it your own way matey. I wouldn’t say there’s gatekeeping stopping stores from stocking small press books. It’s more about distribution and stocking comics that store know they can sell. I’ve spoken to hundreds of stores over the years about stocking my comics. Loads to…but more don’t and that’s because the stores tell me their customer only but big two and sometimes image…but raises the question, how can they buy it if they don’t know about it and you don’t stock it?! That the crazy part. Anyway best of luck 👍 Thanks for the support
@@MattGarveyComics good points!! And thanks bro same to you!!
Take a look at Fade-in pro screenwriting software. It’s not expensive
I’ve written a few screenplays and there are several formatting tools for that. Are there any formatting tools for comics?
I think final draft has one, but I just use WORD. For comics it’s more about structure rather than format.
Thanks a lot! I’m interested in making my own comics after rediscovering my childhood dream and passion for comics. I’ve missed so much over the years and there’s a whole world for me to discover 😃🥳 Content like yours is invaluable and I feel like it’s not impossible to learn even though I’m a bit late in the start 😅🎨
You’re welcome, matey and you’re never to old to start making comics matey! 👍
Hi, where do I go to find a comic artist in person? I am not good with tech, email and most websites. So where do I go to find one in person?
Comic cons are your best bet, buddy. Looks who is attending and find some artists you’d like to walk with before hand and then take a walk around artists alley and have a chat with people 👍 Thanks for the support
@@MattGarveyComics ok. What are your thoughts on getting an artist from an art studio? There are no comic cons near me lately, not any that I know of, but I will look.
Not sure, matey. Think it might be pricey 😬
What about "I'm" , does that have a crossbar or no crossbar?
I wouldn’t, depends on the font 👍
@@MattGarveyComics I writing the text by hand, hehe. Kind of hard cos I cant move it around and stuff, hehe. Thanks for the info bro, very helpful.
I’m impressed, good luck…and just to be safe no capital I in i’m if you’re hand lettering 😜
When I'm at a convention and I see an artist at a table and chat and when I see other customers coming, I offer for them to look through the artist folder when there are multiple folders so that could help the artist with potential sales too.
That’s a nice thing to do 👍
Definitely very helpful information, thank you! ^u^ /gen
You’re welcome dude
Is it worthwhile to make a comic book nowadays?
Depends what your goals are, matey. I love it
I should like to make comics on moral teaching for kids even adults also mainly for sharing. I'm a writer and I published a book on moral teaching recently. I need some pieces of advice please. Thanks
Hi Matt, Thanks a lot for your videos. You got me hooked after watching your video on how to create a video for a kickstarter project. I'm an indie comic book creator based in the UK [Walsall to be precise]. I would like to contact you beyond this platform and seek your assistance on how to launch a successful kickstarter and also sell my comic books. Kind regards buddy.
Website is in tge video links matey. Happy to try and answer any questions you have
@MattGarveyComics OK great appreciated. Thnx
Comics of today are resumed to bad art tons of cgi stuff and woke propaganda That’s why manga eat their lunch
If you say so matey
Why not a movies
Structurally they are different. Movies are build around a three act structure. Comics can also be in three acts BUT it’s not moving pictures, it’s sequenctial still art. So needs to be treated differently
Really good content mate - love it and thank you ;-)
Cheers dude
Kill your darlings is an art form in itself. xP Nice videos. :D
Cheers dude
I have a idea for a hero, would like an opinion about it(if i don't ask gor much); Hero Name: Rainbow Man Real Name:Daniel "Dan" Bates Power:He can create Rainbows, which he can control into barriers and color bullets that when they hit something and change the color of the object or creature. Weaknesses: Besides a peanut allergy,he has the average human Weaknesses. What do you guys think?
It’s certainly possible unique idea, matey
@@MattGarveyComics thank you
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been scouring the internet for how to properly format my comics. I had gotten frustrated as I didn't think I was going to be able to print my comics, but this has helped tremendously. Thanks!
Aweeee you’re welcome matey! So glad it helped
I’m currently working on 3 comics and this was Great to hear. I feel like these are fair prices hopefully I’ll be releasing at least one by the middle of 2025
That’s great to hear, buddy! You got this
I was so against the first part of this video then you flipped a switch.
😜
Great insight, my heart goes also to those artist who undervalues themselves on extreme rates back in the 2000s up to 2015s. As much how people will find desperate ways to find their clients (on which most of them are not corpos.) by devaluing themselves it's best that we should all treat this as a proper art business unless you're from somewhere else outside U.S. and the tax system differs but I'd also figure it out why some companies outsource clients to save money on which why the pay rate themselves are on that level. P.S. also you said around at 8:40 - 9:01 mark I can see some folks are guilty of telling other artist what their charge rate should be during the days on deviantart (and I see some guys telling that on Quora as well) only to lowball the price based on their skill level as such and it can be discouraging as well once reality catches up.
Cheers for watching dude
Looks like my 12 pages slapstick comedy will not really fit to that layout 😅
Do whatever fits your story, matey
I got a ton of business cards a couple years ago. I might as well use them for my upcoming first con
😜
