Both Eyes Open: Tips For Better Shotgun Wing Shooting & Duck Hunting

  • In last week's tips for better shotgun shooting, Zach Kienbaum and Desirae Edmunds talked about mounting the shotgun, not shouldering it. When the shot gets called, the first step is to bring the gun to your face so you have a straight line of sight down the barrel. Eye dominance plays a huge role in shooting correctly. You not only need to shoot with the correct eye, but also keep both eyes open. For many, having both eyes open may make them see two barrels, but you have to know and trust which barrel is the correct one. Training yourself to shoot this way will give you better peripheral vision and depth perception while bird hunting.

Des comes with Top notch credentials. Listen to what she says! She has broke more championship quality targets than most of us have seen all clays.

First time I've heard this. But if you're hitting the targets using one eye open, does it really matter?

yes, your vision and balance are both worse.

Great video! I did the finger pointing, and I find that my left eye is the dominant eye. But I'm right handed! What do I do? I'm 66yrs old. Please help

This rule only applies to shotguns when shooting clays. What about stationary targets like a sitting duck. Are you supposed to keep both eyes open not look down the barrel and not line it up with the front sight?

yes, always. your vision and balance are better with 2 eyes open

Same here, I’m right eye dominant and have always closed my left eye while shooting. Is it too late to switch to using both eyes open? Will this make a person faster on a quickly needed shot?

Never too late, just takes practice.

Great video as always. Best example of eye dominance I've seen. Beautiful/visual!!! The shotgun images were also great. I get it now.

I’ve tried this out in the field shooting clays I’m following the clay with both eyes and firing when the clay is clear but I’ve noticed I’m now not giving the correct lead needed how do I correct this ?

hard to shoot a long gun with only 1 hand. Stick to pistols

Poor advise you can shoot right handed still even if cross eyed dominant not a lot of people can do things with their other hand I know I can’t do much with my left as I’m right handed but cross eye dominant . It’s bad to tell people to shoot with their other hand I can barely write with my left hand 😄 wouldn’t want to use a gun with it that’s for sure

you people who are lucky to be right handed and right eye dominant have no idea how hard it would be to change from right to left so stop telling people to make the change as it could take years to make that change so just tell the people to keep both eyes open.
