I'm cross eye dominant. I shoot right handed but my left eye is dominant. If I keep both eyes open, and you know you'll see two beads, the left one takes precedence and I miss. If I just go up and point, I can hit sometimes. But If I use just my right eye, I hit 95% of the time. The method of pointing and shooting with both eyes opened, takes tons of practice to get your hand to eye coordination just right. Then you change barrel lengths, well, you may have to start over. Practice both and see which one works for you. I use one eye and keep that eye on the bird. Seems to work best for me.

I try to explain to other hunters when they inquire about what I did when I made a nice shot. I state its mostly instinctive but I do expain as I mount the shotgun I push the saftey off, gun is firmly seated in my shoulder both eyes are open. I'm now tracking the bird I've picked out I come from behind the bird as I push through the birds body and past it's head once I blanked out the birds bill I squeeze the trigger. I explain it's vital to keep swinging through the bird as if you never squeezed off the shot. One can watch the bird tumble off the end of the barrel if everything worked out correctly.. I also state that one should keep watching the bird you hit as it falls. A well hit bird typically one sees the birds head fold back along the body on a killing shot. If the bird has it's head up as its coming down hit it again or once its on the water finish it off. I find if one doesn't and you knock a bird down over water switch to a second bird knock it dead in the air. Sometimes the first bird when you look back a few seconds later has hit the water and dove.

The instinctive part makes a lot of sense and Zack talks about that in the next video. Our best shots can come when a bird sneaks up on us. We don't have time to think about the whole process, we just do it. Thanks for watching!

Ok so I agree with the principle of always focussing on the target and not the barrel, but how do you incorporate and judge lead into your “aim” if you can’t look at the barrel?

I went back and forth with aiming and pointing with both eyes open. And here's what a think.
Pointing is great , whenever you need to be fast on the trigger its awesome ! BUT ! It takes an incredible amount of practice just to trust yourself with that Hand/eye coordination. The problem is when you want to start tryin this technique but don't have proper shooting position already. Theres no point trusting your hand and eyes if the shotgun and your head are not in the same exact postion everytime you shoulder the gun. This point is not mention anywhere and I think its a crucial one , at least I found out it was after experiencing pointing technique.
Sometimes it works , and sometimes it don't ... unfortunatly for now thats not good enough for me ... If i clay shoot I will be pointing.
When i go Waterfowl I aim .... for multiple reasons. Helps to see if you're in line with the gun (shooting position). Also helps to figure out the lead I need to hit the bird with. Helps to see what went wrong when I miss...
