This is the greatest rivalry in the world. How could it not be? They are literally next door, sell the same products, both around over 100 years, started by members of the same family who feuded...how much better can any rivalry ever be than this? Fantastic! Thanks for doing this video!
Ones a liar and only been there for 97 years.
Like Pats and Geno's in Philly.
@@blaed011 yeah except the locals don’t embrace the rivalry. We shit on it lol
@@michaelcooke6267 why so lol? Curious to know from someone who actually lives there.
@@EddiXP We dont, this guy is talking out his ass.
"What year did you open"
"Ummmm, We wear gloves"
😂
That dude does not get paid to talk lol
That shit made me cringe so hard lol
dude took 10 seconds to reply to the first question 💀
I thought he said 1917, then he said we wear gloves.
"They're there, and you're not there."
"No, we are there. We are here."
They were there first, never mind the pic. ALTERNATIVE FACT.
If he says that picture is bullshit than its bullshit!!
The old man even said "don't believe the picture" 🤣😂🤣😂
Don't listen to picture
@@beclops “they can make it everything”
the guy from lafayette in the background while dave is eating at american! classic!
“They are there and you’re not there”
“No we are there… do not listen to picture” 😂
Hahahaha that was funny
My wife and I just walked into American coney for the first time to give em a try after this. And I SHIT YOU NOT, there was a guy from Lafayette screaming at the big fella in the video making the dogs.. We were floored to see it first hand right after this! This rivalry truly is hot and legitimate 🔥 !
That's hilarious 😂

"I fucking love this city." I love when people realize how great Detroit is. Gotta have some grit to appreciate it
Been to Detroit numerous times. Such a kick ass city. People are fantastic too. Pretty sad people have this perception that Detroit is still 2008 Detroit. Couldn’t be more false. Detroit is badass! The suburbs are great too. Royal Oak is a fun ass time.
*Owner LAdy Cusses like a Sailor* Yup, shes a Detroiter.
@@The_General_Zubas fuck yeah :)
The thing about actually being from Detroit or flint cities like these you don’t give a shit what others think about us 😂😂😂 recognition is for the weak
🎶"Put your hands up for Detroit, I love this city"🎶 truest song ever
My favorite video on a pizza tasting channel is a hotdog rivalry. Wild.
Hahaha. Yes bro.
Pure Michigan
Lafayette seems way more chill and old school plus the old guy is hilarious
No American is the one ☝️
💯 . True Detroit
Lafayette is the spot. Having had both, They taste damn near the same. But Lafayette, has FAR superior vibes.
Yep I like it better.
Anyone who says American is wrong… everyone in Detroit knows this
83 years old been going to both since 50's, I love 'em both
Right answer! Both are great!
It's looks like the modern day Hatfield and McCoy's. I wish I could try them both
Thank you for your service sir 🫡💩🚽
Catching the other owner staring down Dave was amazing.
Literally up and down. She was on his top!
Time stamp?
Yeah. I seen him staring at Dave through the window as well. Kinda creepy and hilarious.

Best part of the vid 😂
I live near Detroit and this rivalry is real, I’ve gotten in serious fights over my love for Lafayette
That is why detroit sucks u fight over hot dogs
Especially when everyone else around the country knows Chicago dogs are better
@@SubieCaleb Chicago hot dogs are for people that wish they were vegan with all of those veggies. Detroit does better Chicago deep dish than Chicago too.
@@hattorihanzo2275 detroit pizza and dogs are represented accurately by the detroit lolions playoff success in your lifetime. A joke. Scram rat
@@SubieCaleb That's funny. There not. They are way overpriced though. We have at least 4 high quality manufactures in Michigan. You have what, Best and Vienna?
“We clean the floors and bathrooms” is the biggest cheap shot of all time.
I don't know about that! Go in there bathrooms and you will see what there talking about, I have. For coneys I prefer Lafayette. Bathrooms I prefer American lol
You wouldn't know if you never been ,it's like the cops bathroom vs the firefighters bathroom ,the firefighters Is always cleaner
@@hardanalljr.3138 I worked in night clubs back in the day and Men's room is always cleaner than the Ladie's room.
In Mexico the competition throws Dead dogs and cat outside your restaurant. I think that takes the cake
It's also literally the only thing American can brag about with Lafayette
Thanks for Coming through.
Welcome 2 Detroit! *Plays the Trick Trick song for a few hours*
As someone who has had both many times, they both use different chili, and different hot dogs, and one uses white onions and one uses yellow onions. They both use different mustards also.
The devil is in the details...Lafayette for me
What dogs and which onions do each use?
Here's a twist, they are actually working together, selling double the dogs. How could you buy one and not the other 😂😂😂
If you’re from Detroit you know this. Lafayette is better though but everyone always buys two
@@SA-km2io FACTS. If there wasn’t an invented rivalry, nobody would go to American. They bank on tourists (like Dave) hitting both spots.
@@perfectsense3240 yes sirrrrr. Spot on.
@@SA-km2io your correct
@@SA-km2io Dave liked American better tho
Very sad to these two places struggling. Glad you’re helping them out. Went there years ago and found myself in American as the wait was slightly less. Thanks Dave!
Ahh man are they? That sucks
Pres: “how well known is it you two don’t like each other?”
Them: “it’s... it’s pretty well known”
😂
When I was 10 years old, my uncle took my dad and I to a tigers night game, we sat on the right field side, Rusty Staub was the right fielder and Mark the Bird Fidrych was pitching. It was a perfect summer night game, the stadium was completely full and the Tigers won. After the game, the fans stayed and clapped until the bird came out for a bow. We then went to the coney, not sure which one and I had my first coney dog. I have since been back whenever possible, one time I had 4 coneys. I will never forget the memories.
I love DP (not something you want to shout in public for SO many reasons) but this episode is my favourite. Hats off, amazing. Made me laugh all the way through as I tried to spoon feed my 1 year old a banana mush. Don’t know how much she ate but the content was spot on. From a tired dad in the UK … thanks!
That was so entertaining I'm not even mad about him not giving a score.
Lafayette 10x better
We need a score.
Super glad this was the number one comment displaying I'm not even going to watch the video now
@@bigdumbchannel you need too. I think this is his best video

Dave is a man of the people. I love that he's spotlighting so many small businesses. The government has really fucked everything up
yah.. I don't think the government created this virus.... so there's that.
@@qrome20 Oof, that didn't age well.
He should review government officials.
So dope they made a killing during the 2024 NFL Draft 🤑
One Dave dramatically pulling out his wallet to pay, everybody knows he’s waiting for the owner to say it’s on the house🏠
It's so funny hes donated like millions yet he still stiffs people irl lmao. Dave is lowkey a comedic genius.
😂
Lmao
So his donations cover the pizza shop? They have no connection whatsoever. If someone is capable of donating Millions to charity than that is great for them but if they are coming into my business and expect free food that's not happening. You can donate all you want but that doesn't pay for my food ingredients bills etc.
I would do the same thing
Born and raised in Detroit and this is my favorite thing you've ever done. Detroiters love their Coney Islands. You got me hooked on Prime Pizza in LA now too.
Check out his jacket
This makes me want to visit Detroit. Funny video. The rivalry seemed wholesome and friendly 😂
“Don’t listen da picture!” 😂😂
"Don't Listen to picture ... " Dave is the friggen best to go back over there. Priceless as usual, a true American treasure.
I want a whole series on this rivalry
It's one I just can't think of the title check on youtube
We need an old school man vs food documentary
ONE CONEY IS NEVER ENOUGH - No matter which one you try! You will be back for more.
Like the guy said 2 is the perfect amount
Especially once you eat a Flint style coney

I think Dave would have needed to actually visit the bathroom at Lafayette for that to really make sense. It's one of those "go down the very narrow staircase to the basement bathroom closet" situations.
I’m still a Lafayette guy. I lived in the city growing up in my youth, moved downtown in my adult years then moved out the burbs. Still Lafayette all day. Nothing against American. I’ve had theirs too, but Lafayette in my opinion is the shit and the vibes when you eat inside. Rugged.
Both are good, but any true Michigander knows national is better than both. It's the best chilli easily.
@@joshlewis575 National is killer too no doubt. I still give Lafayette the slight edge. Just my opinion. Both are the truth though.
@@joshlewis575 Their restaurant in Canton sucks. The Coney's I sell from my hot dog cart at Menards using National chili is better. Actually I was pretty shocked when I realized it.
Nah, duly’s all the way.
Bro Lafayette just touches the soul
Dave, you've got to back a documentary on this rivalry. So so good!
One broken english accent...everybody knows that guy works 27-hours a day.
I'm from Detroit. Eat there all the time. He's always there. Always!
@@theonlybenbaker Do you like Lafayette or American better?
@@dgan2304 honesty Lafayette. But now, after watching this, I’m questioning it. I normally go straight to Lafayette though. Something about those dirty bathrooms and rude ass staff. Just does it for me.

@@theonlybenbaker they've been yelling orders from the tables since the 80s. Nothing like 2 all the way with a Vernos
I’m a Lafeyette guy - Been 25 times to American once - but it’s true ... the shitter down the sketchy ass stairs past the boiler room in Lefeyette is the real deal! After a Red Wing game and 8 Molsons it’s more of a challenge getting there in one piece
Its always funny to me when americans talk about molsons idk why
@@leorickt.9604 its fancy import beer 🤣
Small price to pay for deliciousness.
Over 100 years of rivalry, doesn't get better
25 years of going to detroit for sporting events i've always swayed towards Lafayette. I've have American many times because Lafayette was too busy. I like both but I LOVE the extra Chili and onions on my dog. It's a sloppy mess but hits the spot. that's why they give you a fork.
Same, I don't think it's even close though.. It's like unanimous that everyone likes Lafayette.
How do I get that sick jacket???
Dave is great for helping these people. The guy at lafeyette is silly but he seems like a stand up guy
Helping ? Nobody that actually has the means to go there and eat is hearing about them for the first time from this video
Thanks Dave. Please keep doing what you're doing! Where we are in this country right now, you keep our, at least my, hope alive.
Im dying over here from the picture-proof part at the end. Spittin food everywhere. "We are here! we are here!"
The old guy at the end was hilarious: "their there, we're here." 😂😂😂

I love how Dave went back with the picture. At the end of the day I hope both get some good business out of this!

What a great episode. I’m through and through a pizza guy but this has to be way way up there with one of, if not the, best ever David.

I'm rolling at the end here, I've lived here 52 yrs and never new the entire Story but the that guy from Laff at the end is a riot- " Don't believe that picture, were right here, right here" OMG lmao...
The best is at 7:31 when the guy from Lafayette comes out and bangs on the American window while Dave is eating the American dog! Love the rivalry!

Greatest pizza review ever!! New segment getting to the bottom of food rivalries
This was a freaking blast from start to finish. The lady in charge of American Coney Island is too much 😂😂😂
I generally choose which hot dog I eat based on what year the shop opened
Unfortunately that means you’ll have to suffer a visit to Fort Wayne, Indiana for your coney dogs, as Famous Coney Island there predates both of these. Not many people realize Fort Wayne is basically Detroit’s unofficial minor league feeder city. Even the Pistons originated there before moving to Detroit.
Lafayette is the better dog. Hits the spot after a Tigers game.
I agree Lafayette is better in my opinion.
Nah

I’ve done both. I lean towards layfette. I still feel like this is a racquet. They are the same, and using the rivalry for business. I feel like the old men work at layfette and their kids work at American. And once the American workers get too old they get moved up lol
Love how the lafayettes old guy starts peering in through American coneys window around 7:40

I remember reading a Bob Talbert column in the Detroit Free Press where he told how he went to the Lafayette Coney island for lunch and was served a coney with a hair in it. He complained to the staff and the waiter just came over and pulled the hair out. He didn't apologize or offer him a new one. He just pulled the hair out and expected him to eat it.
