@@nevaeh9961 It is. There is a couple of things you need to be aware of. They didn't use the best metal fasteners in places where safety isn't an issue... i.e oxidation. (I wire brushed those and painted) Didn't use much rust proofing in certain areas.... particularly in the sub frames - front and rear. If you live in state where they use a lot of road salts expect some rust in those areas. Not an issue for me since I replaced and painted/undercoated those parts. If you find one in good condition and you maintain it i.e oil and fluid changes it should be very reliable.
I love the caliber. It's the best, most reliable car I've ever owned. I've had it for 10 years or so, and the car is almost 14 years old with 210k on the speedometer, and it still going strong, I'm hoping to keep it til it hits 16 years old at least,or the engine quits.
I've owned two calibers, loved them both. Great space and great gas milage (both highway and city)... And before anyone makes acomment about this being my second one, the reason I have asecond one is due to an accident whereby while I was stationary at teh end of a line of cars due to a backup at an interchange, some asshat who wasn't paying attention plowed into my rear moving at around 60mph... As I not only walked away without so much as a minor bruise... I bought another one.
I personally love my 08 R/T with the 2.4L and AWD I am quite happy with the mileage which I constantly beet the EPA estimate both in city and on highway. I like the handling, and the smooth transmission! I also love the space and like the auto stick for when I want to play with it. Plus I have never gotten stuck in nasty weather Even when it snowed so deep that I was fallowing where only 4x4 trucks where getting threw.
I've got an 07 Caliber SXT, and I love it. The styling is right on, and performance is there when you want it, if you don't have the CVT. It handles pretty good too considering the weight of the car. I think the thing thats kinda tainted the calibers acceleration performance as being subpar is the POS CVT they put in it. Its good for just everyday driving in stop and go traffic, but for performance its the worst choice possible. My 1.8L 5 speed feels faster than a 2.4L AWD CVT equiped R/T.
I own a 2007 AWD R/T, almost exactly like the one they tested. Overall, I'm very happy with it. They're absolutely right about the acceleration. In addition to being underpowered, it's unpredictable. There's a hair's breadth between hardly moving and HOLY SHIT. It handles well enough steering-wise. The brakes feel fine, and you do have to press hard in emergency situations, which is not a problem for me. The AWD is awesome in snow and ice. Much better than a 2wd even with winter tires.
I can't explain, you already know how you feel about the car and its performance, I look at the car but it doesn't grab me to want to own it seriously, but it makes me inevitable to the facts that this car has some unhidden potential
Say what they want about the slalom on the track, but it worked well enough in real life where I had to do the same maneuver to dodge two accidents. One would have happened on the left, so I swerved right, then immediately left again as someone was about to slam into me on the right. That was one cluster **** of a situation, and you wouldn't quite visualize it without being there, but the car handled it fine.
I have a question. my daughter has a caliber 07 exactly like this in the video. my question is why would her 07 caliber rear end slide around when she hits slippery sections (icy/winter) and on dry pavement it seems fine?
+BARBARIAN757 I have a 2007 Caliber base and have the exact same problem. I'm not sure but I believe it is because of the lack of weight over the rear wheels, don't know for sure though.
mpg not as good as advertised on these (more like 20mpg or less on the freeway) but the handling is way better than it states here. Can't try to drive it like older, heavier models. It can take the tight turns that the test driver in the video was too afraid to try. That body roll is deceptive. I've avoided so many accidents in mine.
I got mine yesterday... its soooooo cool! I guess I am nearly the only one ere in Bremen, Germany with that car. And it has all available extras, including beige leather :) I totally fell in love with this car.
@coolerdude44, yes I have acquired the knowledge why the caliber srt-4 was discontinued but because of the reasons you have stated in your comment is not the reason some people wants to own the car, but thanks for your concern
had a 2009 , it was a good small size car. Traded for more space. Think Dodge should used the money they put to the new Dart on the Caliber and kept it out. If they spend the commercial dollars on the Caliber that they put on TV for the Dart, the Caliber would out sale the Dart
We've got a diesel Caliber (CRD) with manual gear and it speeds up real fast. It takes 7-8 liters per 100 km in the city and 5-6 on the road. It is like 20% cheaper than the competition, at least in Poland. Interior not that great but a good buy anyway.
These and the Sebring [08-11] are so dogged on by the 'experts', but most comments from owners are usually positive. Probably makes for a low priced used decent car. Can't go wrong with that.
my husband has a 2008 caliber srt4...its awesome...not only luxurious..but fast...but then again he has like 2000 dollars in aftermarket parts in it...in the end it will be almost 400 hp
Everybody’s a critic. They are not bad cars. Chrysler has always been the one company to think outside the box. They at one point had something for everybody’s style.
I enjoy mine quite nicely. the R/T is worth it if you can afford it. Just dont expect the R/T badge to give you much more in the way of performance. ;)
they screwed up as the CVT does not have 'Autostick' as a CVT has no gears to shift, and yes the CVT feels a little more sluggish compared to the auto or manual off the line but man it goes like stink once you are rolling as the engine winds up to 6000RPM and stays there until you lift, but under normal driving the lack of shifting keeps the fuel efficiency high (I think the wife's is rated at 41mpg) not bad for a 175bhp car
@ecurules be able to haul people, cargo, and whatever else with more storage capacity, and interior space, while still being cheaper (in price) than a mazda 3 etc etc. Perfect for students, or lower income families. Not saying any of the other cars are bad (i had a mazda also. Thing ran like a dream after 500k kms.) but they serve a different purpose.
Ride like people. They don't like riding with the seats down like I thought they would. Like to look out the windows and with the seats folded and the movement of the car, they can't get their balance. Have to remember that the back windows go all the way down unlike my old Tarsus that only went down part way.
they got a shitty caliber, i just have a standard model and it gets 0-60 in 6.2 seconds flat, the ride is amazing, the only real issue is if you do step of the gas around 30 is it will drop out of gear momentarily and cause a slight hicup
@mrlovesjesus811 i don't think it does, i think dodge just stuck a hammer under the hood and called it a day. they should know by now that power isn't everything.
@mrlovesjesus811 then why would anybody want a car that can't put its power onto the road, has a $3 interior and a $2 suspension and gearbox, and is pig-ugly? please explain the appeal to me.
I also drive this car. Mexicans at work laugh because I drive it. It's black and has a Russian flag on the back. (Don't ask questions)- but it's a badass car
I don't think of you as anything but a person with an opinion, it neither right or wrong and yes I read and saw that comparison test but I still have my thoughts about the car...........
wth? 0-60 in 10.1 seconds? with 172hp? cmon' a pontiac vibe with the 2.4L engine does 0-60 in under 9 seconds with only 158hp. i think GM should try to make their CVT like the nissan ones, those perform much better.
I rented one of these for a week. What an dreadful car. Cured me of any desire to buy a Dodge. Fuel consumption STILL languishing in the mid 20s while the Corolla does 35mpg.
@mrlovesjesus811 the srt4 was discontinued because it was horrible and nobody bought it. it's slower than a golf gti around a circuit, yet it has 80 bhp more. it was pathetic, much like the standard calibre.
lol 10.1 second. I love the way this car looks, I have one right for a rental, but its the 2.0L one. Anyway, the cvt is odd, the rmps go up while the engine tries to catch up to it. Kind of odd. I want the SRT 300 horse power version that came out.. sweeettt.
@MysteryMusicManTV i dont. i drive a SVT Focus. and I do like american brands, with recent cars both Ford and GM have the ability to create good interiors, look at any of the 2011 fords or the Buick Regal or the CTS i just dont like dodge because they put no effort in their cars. you can make a nice interior. look at the new 2012 focus itll cost under 25k and has an interior that looks like it should be on a car that cost 35k. if you want something cheap go buy a toyota, theyre built in america
I Bought a 2009 Caliber SXT The engine has no power thing runs like a sewing machine totally bizarre transmission slips in and out of gear had to replace the muffler right away as I couldn't stand the sound of the engine. Put a KatBack muffler sounds a lot better .Drive the damn thing in low gear 60%of the time as once you put it in drive the rpms drop off to 1000 and acceleration drops to 0.
I was stuck with one of those during a rental last week..WHAT A LOAD OF SHIT this car is! Cheap quality all throught this car..What happened to the great designs of Chrysler?
Its a roomy car and its comfortable for long drives. The dash board is kind of shitty plastic but fits together nice and the engine is loud but its a reliable car. I had my two years and it hasnt broke down once. The headliner and seats are nice. I mean its a $16000 car. Where the fuck do you get a car for $16000. The ford Will start. If you can get the key to turn but the dodge starts every time.
cheap plastic basic dash....almost bought 1......liked outside but the inside is cheap...got a 140bhp tdi vw golf instead....butch better....you can get the same engine in this aswell i know.. in the uk.

we had a 2009 as a rental. Shitiest car ever made. I swear i though it was like a 2001 and not a 2009. Everything is made from hard plastic and the seats are shit. Drives shit. This is why they went bankrupt. This is one of the worst cars i have ever driver. Id rather buy a hundai, kia for twice as much as this car is worth then have this car.
that car is a POS. just compare one of these to one of the new 2012 ford focuses or a mazda 3 or a golf. that interior is awfully cheap and really has no taste. dodge is a crappy brand.

What does GM have to do with rating Chrysler/Dodge engines?

I live 4 miles from work... It doesn't matter if I drive a Prius or a Peterbilt. I do like the R/T, but WITHOUT that stupid CVT !!!
@pafro77 remember that americans use miles per US-gallon, so that 25mpg is actually 30mpg in your terms.

get the srt4
Cars like these are the reason why chrysler failed.
Lmao, Well I have the Original SRT-4! The model that is actually appealing. But you will be damn sure I will be going to test drive the Caliber SRT-4.
I have a 2011 best car we ever had
