- In today's video, Paul from The Studio Rats is demoing how to get the best out of IK Multimedia TONEX. This fantastic software not only lets you play through a variety of unobtainable amplifiers, it also enables you to capture your own amps and take them around in either your computer or one of the IK Multimedia TONEX Pedals.

These are the kinds of videos we need! Please do the same kind of video for the actual pedal. If you could touch on input trim settings, that would be helpful. I keep adjusting it and cant seem to find a sweet spot that fits well with all of the presets I have.
Paul
I bought the tonex pedal recently
This video was really helpful
In introducing me to the software . I’ve just been enjoying the pedal presets ( snatched practice time as usual!)
Thank you 👍🙏
Yes please make more Tonex videos for beginners like you did with the Katana series. I bought a Tonex for Christmas and tried it out and it sounded nothing like your video. I am going to give it another try after work today after seeing you explain it. Thanks Paul!
Bloomin’ great vid Paul - so informative! 👏🏻
Thanks my bald brother
Always appreciate your note and chord selection. Appreciate the info as well. 👍
Cheers!
Love the video Paul, especially how the compressor works in general with Tonex or anything, I never understand the details on how that affects tone 🙌🏻
Thank you Paul. Took yours and James advice and got the tonex. Getting around that software makes me pull my hair out. This really helps thx
Great to hear!
Yes please, a similar video for the pedals would be really useful.
Oh my, sounding great!!!!
Nice job Paul. I think we'd all be very interested as to how you would set up tonex pedal live. Incidentally, your Independence pack was the reason I bought the pedal. Killer tone!
Thanks Paul! Very helpful. I would vote for a pedal video. Cheers!
Great timing. I just bought a ToneX One
Nice one mate I bought the regular Tonex pedal partly based on The Studio Rats reviews. The presets aren't great but some of the 'paid for' captures are astounding. I love mine for home use and gigging. Good luck with yours.
@@rolandguilford8301 Yep, finding the right captures is critical, makes all the difference.
Your packs are GREAT!!!
Cheers
Thanks for all your videos. I would like to see how to interact between the Tonex and Amplitube if possible.
I am hoping that you will do a capture pack of the Amplified Nation "Steel String Singer" for Tonex, especially the normal channel. I will be getting my Tonex One tomorrow and look forward to tring some of your patches. Thanks.
Love the tone x
I so want to get my sound city first year run concord to you to try and model...
It sounds absolutely beautiful, very two rock without the compression
And good luck finding another one !
More tutorials on getting best from the Tonex software
Many thanks
Kimball
Will do!
Hey Paul, do you ever plan to do DI capture packs? Amp+Cab captures in comparison for use with power amp & speaker cab are not that great.
Great demo! It’s funny that every tonex video I watch it seems to have a lot of mid range and not a lot of high end presence. Then I realised that I’m coming from the HX platform where the default impedance is very low and most IR’s default to having a lot in the 15-20k range.
Haha it’s just funny that my ears are used to digital amps whereas the tonex platform is clearly a better representation of a real amp which I’ve sadly not had to mic for years!!
It’s so true! I bought the tonex because it’s supposed to sound like a real miced amp, then I realise I’ve forgotten what that sounds like!
I love the sound of your new Amplified Nation tone packs. They sound amazing. What set up would you recommend to get the best sound and feel in the room? I love the way Tonex sounds through my headphones, but I don’t like the way it sounds through my studio monitors. I’m thinking to try a power amp and a real cab. What would you recommend? Thanks!
I know this wasn't a question aimed at the wider audience, but I't just though it throw in my thought from my own experience. I spent months using the Tonex through a clean power amp and an orange 2x12 cab. It's great if you only want a handful of amps that work well with that one cabinet but the speaker has such a massive influence on the sound that all your profiles end up just sounding kinda the same. I also tried the line 6 power cab but in the end I came to the conclusion that a decent set of studio monitors aimed straight at our face just sounds better than what is essentially one big monitor on the floor. After month of chasing the whole amp in the room thing Ive totally leaned into paying through studio monitors and all I really needed to do was just low cut and high cut and that was enough to make it sound more natural and cab like. Might be worth playing with that as a starting point. I use the Tonex pedal into a HX effects with a low and high cut block
Are you adding any preamp gain from your audio interface ?
Hello Paul.. An interesting idea would be to run the pedal into a neutral flat poweramp ( SD Powerstage?) and mic a real cab. I haven't seen this video from anyone yet. I am awaiting a Tonex One pedal to show up on my step. That is how I am going to try it as well. Thanks
New Tonex One user here. I’ve experimented a bit with turning the cab sims off and going into the fx return of my tube amps. What I’ve learned initially is that I got pretty awful results if the capture I’m using had a cab sim included, because the Tonex sort of “guesstimates” what element the cab sim was playing. I haven’t yet used any of the cab only captures (that require an IR of some sort when running direct into my computer), but I expect these to perform much better into the fx return of my amps. Will report back when I’ve got some results.
I love your captures but i wish the tonex sofware would recognise the packs i bought from your website as owned packs , they show up as to buy on the software even though i have them loaded in tonex and can use them
gr8 vid! Pls sir can I have some more like this (TONEX)
Ya, my biggest complaint on the tonex pedal is the clipping and headroom. I’m still trying to find the right amount live it seems like.
Hi Paul, It would be great if you would do a ‘getting the most out of your ToneX pedal’ video. It would also be great to know when you are recoding with it, do you go into the instrument, line, or mic input on your interface. And why you chose to build a recording board around it, rather than use the plugin. Many thanks
That’s literally the name of this video 🤔
@@QuickSticks8771Yes, it's very close to the title of this video, 😉 ua-cam.com/video/xFdmkoEhq38/v-deo.htmlsi=c3tUuU-BSB54CeTH&t=29
I have a few digital processors softwares (Amplitube 5, Guitar Rig 7, Bias FX 2, Bias Pedal and Bias Amp, Tonex) they all sounds great for recording using my Studio One 6 DAW, but sound like crap when connecting to a real amplifier for live performance. I use iRig HD 2 and have already tried using my amp Send/return to go to iRig and from iRig just to the return bypassing the preamp. They sound better, but very far from a good quality effect multi-effect pedal. Is there a way to really make it work great ? Can Tonex Capture improve the quality considering its impedance corrections ? is it a good solution for real performance in a real amp ? I've heard also about Headrush powered speakers that was made for that (in this case not using a real amp, but the Headrush as the amp/ Please, help me because I've spent a good money trying to solve this issue.
Any reason you're using an interface instead of using the interface built into the tonex?
Can you plug tonex straight into studio powered monitors??
Would it sound good???
Yea and yes
I don’t see these menus on my iPad. Version. Not seeing a way to download and add your two rock etc packs to this.
The ipad version is fairly behind the PC/Mac version. It also does not support uploading profiles to a Tonex pedal.
@@wootks wonderful, well that means I’ll have to get a laptop
Isn't it better to put the compressor after the amp?, in that way we let all the transients into the amp to have more dynamics especially on edge of breakup tones and in that way we also emulate studio recordings, most iconic studio sounds have a compressor AFTER the amp has been captured to polish the sound without affecting transients on the amp circuit
Also, when calibrating input levels is better to aim at 18dB of headroom as that's the level most modelers are calibrated, setting input levels too hot (right before clip) is not a good tip as that'll cause clean captures to sound distorted with less headroom, when we play into an amp the input level, the sensitivity, is fixed and we should aim to do the same on modelers so when we switch guitars we have a better representation of that amp in real life as we can't change input levels on amps, it's NOT the same as "volume" input on an amp neither "master" volume
Pre and post compression are completely different things. I am not going to add post compression to a tone, as IF needed that would be done at the mix stage.
The one thing is it doesn't have a effect loop
