Hi Ben, thank you for the videos, very informative & nicely edited! I have a 98 Acura RL 3.5 - My odometer / trip numbers are NOT visible. I watched your videos on Radio Removal & Dash Light Replacement as it is apparent I will need to access the cluster board. Do you know IF my issue is a "bulb" replacement (backlight the LCD), OR, is this some type of chip on board replacement? I watched a video that was posted for a TL model that showed a "Chip Board" being required. Do you know if this board is somewhat of an easy replacement or is this something that should be addressed by a Pro? Thank you!
Odometer issues are common for the RL, and several repair services show up if you search "acura rl cluster repair"; eBay has a few. I haven't attempted a repair myself, nor do I know of any other layman who has attempted the repair, so I'm not sure if it's a plug-and-play fix (doubt it) or if it requires some soldering or other type of mechanical repair. You may want to check the 96-04 Acura RL Facebook group, but I didn't see any posts indicating it being a simple DIY repair when I did a quick search.
If I understand what you're saying, the trim under the steering wheel needs to be removed. You may want to watch the video again. Let me know if you still have questions.
@@carapprentice I actually just finished removing mine. I can confirm that I didn’t need to remove those lower trim panels (‘99 with Nav). Just the two screws on top of the bezel and removal of the center console so the tabs of the bezel will clear
Does the horn work? If not, it would seem that your clock spring (cable reel) has failed. I've never had to replace one, but the procedure is in the "Restraints" section of the service manual: www.mediafire.com/file/uvbmryok1ax4vbs/Acura_RL_-_Factory_Service_Manual_%25281996-2004%2529.zip/file
Hey Ben. Thanks again for another helpful video. When ordering the bulb, do they send a single bulb or a complete replacement pack? I was about to order on acuraoem when the question struck me.
This is perfect! Do you know if the gauge illumination lights are replaceable? The light that illuminates my fuel gauge is out so it’s impossible to see unless in bright sun and I’d love to fix that. Seems very do-able!
If I remember correctly, you may have to go deeper and remove the outer circuit board. Important: If so, make sure you label the circuit board screws and put them back exactly in their original holes. Thanks for checking out the video!
Here's a listing that has the official part numbers: www.oemacuraparts.com/v-1999-acura-rl--premium--3-5l-v6-gas/electrical-exhaust-heater-fuel--meter-components
Quick question Ben is it easier to replace the entire gauge or can the stepper motors be fixed? I have to tap on the cluster to get some of the bulbs to light up and the rpm gauge likes to drop to 0 and the oil light flashes.
Sorry, I didn't forget about your question. It sounds like the switch in the left door panel may be bad or there's corrosion on the contacts. Here are links to the factory service manual and an excerpt from the "Body Electrical" section: www.mediafire.com/file/uvbmryok1ax4vbs/Acura_RL_-_Factory_Service_Manual_%25281996-2004%2529.zip/file www.mediafire.com/file/gtjqwy526j6fdr2/RL9604S23358A+-+PowerMirrors.pdf/file Also, here's a link to a video on removing the door panel if you need it: ua-cam.com/video/so-sAAVUJYk/v-deo.html Hope this helps.
You may have a bad fuel sending unit. There's a test on page 11-144 of the service manual in the Fuel and Emissions section, but it will require removing the rear seat (video in the RL playlist). Here's a link to the service manual: bit.ly/3qpJbSR Hope this helps.
Hello, I have a 96 rl 3.5...the speed meter and diameter not working what cause the problem. I just replaced the speed sensor but is still the same. Let me know what cause it. Thank you.
This is a known issue with the 96 RL. There are several instrument cluster repair services online. This one seems to have good reviews, but I've never used them myself: modulemechanics.com/

I just want to first say thanks for the videos, they have been super helpful. Just did my first oil change ever with your 99 RL video. I was commenting to see if you have tried to drive the 1999 RL without the cluster? I just got the 99 RL a couple weeks ago. The issue is that the odometer does not work but everything else does such as speedometer, rpms, etc. I really like the car and want to continue to take care of it mechanically and aesthetically. I understand for the odometer is not just a bulb but rather a board. I was emailing with a website "mechanic modules" and they seem to have experience replacing the board and bulbs. I purchased the service and am going to take the cluster out and ship it to them. Do you know if the car drives fine without the cluster? I could not find much online for this specific car. I will have an update myself next week but wanted to see if anyone knew prior to that. I posted on AcuraZine to see if anyone knows on there too. I read some other vehicles (not acuras) that would not do certain things such as accelerate properly or charge the battery with the cluster removed. I just wanted to see if anyone heard of anything like this for the RL 99.
That's a good question. I would guess that the car can operate without the cluster, but I'm not sure. I would pose the question to the 96-04 Acura RL Facebook group: facebook.com/groups/1427987647415950
@@adamjmashal hey I was wondering if module mechanics worked out for you. I have the exact situation and can’t find anything online. Oh my god I literally just bought this same exact car as my first car same model year and color too lmao please never delete these videos🙏
Great first car 😀
