Welcome to Car Apprentice! My name is Ben, and I'm very happy to have you here.
I started learning how to work on cars mainly out of necessity; my 1992 Acura Legend was starting to show its age, and I knew I would have to learn how to maintain and repair it myself if I wanted to keep it...or fatten up my bank account. Once I started, though, I got hooked!
I created this channel to pass on knowledge I've gained working on cars and to learn from others who visit the channel. We'll approach automotive repair and maintenance from the relative novice's perspective, and you'll frequently hear safety, using proper tools and techniques, and torque specs mentioned in the videos.

Did this job and cross threaded one of the bolts. Had to put in a threaded insert. This one is far easier than the rear one.

Thanks.

I have a 04 R.L . Just replaced battery and alternator the car drove fine, then out of the blue stopped starting, makes clicking when trying to turn over. It has 178k miles. I know its hard to tell but does this sound like starter to you?
@chrizstevenson9924 I would start by checking the battery's connections and verifying that it's holding a charge. Any dash lights lit?
Thanks to you I will be replacing my plugs in my 1999 RL today! I can’t believe what I used to pay the dealer to do this stuff for me. Thank you !
Great Video ! Thanks Is it necessary to remove the strut bar ? Seems like you could access the coils without removing the bar. ( I could be wrong )
Yes, the strut bar needs to be removed. Thanks for watching the video!
I appreciate that you showed in the difficult parts
It's a fun one 😀
thx, this video save my car, thx❤
How can anyone know so much?
@@CarlosPerez-r8j Practice...and a copy of the factory service manual 😀
Hi what's the part number for the head gasket?? Front and rear part number if you have it thanks
2007 - 2009 MDX's head gasket is the same on the front and the rear: 12251-RYE-A01.
@carapprentice thanks do you think it's the same for 2013?
@hmongxwb88 It's 12251-RKG-004 for the 2013. I usually search for parts on one of the dealer sites such as oemacuraparts.com, acura.bernardiparts.com, or acurapartswarehouse.com.
@carapprentice thanks yea I just called the dealership acting like I was gonna purchase from them and did confirm that both part number are the same usually they don't like to give out part number right from the start but acting like potential buyer and then asking questions helps haha
I've got 2003 Rl 3.5 leaking oil. I noticed oil on the bottom of the cat and on the top of the motor under the intake. Any ideas.
It could be the valve cover gasket...or you could have a couple of leaks. I would clean with a degreaser then attempt to trace the leak to its source. UV dye for oil, which can be purchased at a local auto parts store, might be useful.
Hi Car Apprentice! It looks like I may have to go through this process on my 98 RL! When I separated my pads from the caliper I noticed rust inside of the hollow part of the piston. Hoping that it's just from the pads, which were worn down and rusted beyond belief. I'm never letting it get like that again. Thanks for putting up such great content! I have been following your instructions for quite some time! You are my go to channel for all things RL!
Thanks for checking out the videos! Appreciate it.
How hard is it to change the top LED strip looking brake light inside the car? Mine went out 😢 lol
Same mine is a 2004 do you have to swap the whole thing?
Fantastic, I did get the screws out of order for the tac and it does not work. Do you know where the 2 long screws go? If you do, would you let me know? If you do, can you explain it from looking at the back side as you are screwing the screws in. Thank you so much. Rick H

Hey Car apprentice good morning ☀️ Can you please help me find my windshield wiper fluid motor? It needs to be replaced but I don’t know where it’s at.
It's #1 in this picture: acura.bernardiparts.com/acura/Parts-List.aspx?year=1&product=7&door=1&grade=44&transmission=1&area=1§ion=5&assembly=3058
You're awesome man fr 👍🏼 Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving.
Thats a good job but the best way is to take the hinge appart, sand/ blast it, then paint it. Paint in the ass if you ask me.
Thanks. Yeah, I wasn't interested in going to those lengths for door hinges.
Hey can you please tell me what a “maintenance required” light on the dash means? Thank you.
It's simply a vehicle maintenance reminder. The owner's manual has more details: owners.acura.com/vehicle-information

Did this a couple summers ago
I've been watching this whole series. Great job and thanks for posting all this content. I really like all the detail. I have one question about soaking the oil pump in water. Are you concerned that water may enter the pump itself?
Thanks! Yes, I was a little concerned about water in the oil pump, so I spent a lot of time blowing it out with compressed air. It might be best to only clean the pump's surfaces.
So when i did the timing belt on my 13 13 MDX I wanted to change seals on the cams, i forgot to loosen gear bolts when belt was on and used impact gun moving can about a 1/4 of a turn, i was hoping i didn't damage valve but when i finish installing everything and started the car i felt vibration in the engine, i knew what it was. Very expensive mistake
😮 Did you confirm the damage?
So i did my TB on my 2013 MDX and have missfire codes on cylinders 3 4 5, i checked the marks is all good unless i moved the cams and damaged valves
You don’t need to remover several gears just the one with the black oring around it(bottom gear in 4:33) after that put petroleum jelly on the other gears to lubricant them, after that it won’t make any noise and it won’t auto eject like most units eventually do
Hope this works for viewers. Thanks for the info.
You're the man! Doing this this weekend.
Hi , do you have to remove those small gear completed out to make it it more clear ? I hear that people apply lithium white grease on it and make it smoother sound
I haven't tried white lithium - probably some worth trying before removing the gears. The adapter has been working fine for two years and counting without the gears.
Is starter motor on your Acura RL the same as the Acura Legend KA7? Thanks

What's the total capacity 8.2 qts for? Is that if I completely fill it up or what's the difference about the 3.2 quart initial fill?
The drain and fill capacity is 3.2 qts. If the transmission requires an overhaul, the full system capacity is 8.2 qts.
Thank you sir. Dealing with my 04 RL 252k miles.. U helped me do timing belt and cam plugs confidently. These cars are not so scary once you dig in a little bit. The dash wiring though, that's another story.
Glad the videos have been helpful. Thanks for watching!

VERY helpful! You were succinct and to the point, but didn't go too quickly- love it. Thank you!!
Thanks! Appreciate you watching the video.
Hey good video. I'm not sure if I have this problem on my 2004 Honda Pilot. Here's what it does and has ever since I bought it used in late 2019. With no AC or Heat or any climate control function on. Driving car in any weather, warm air comes out of all dash vents. In the winter months (Southern US) literally I don't have to turn on AC and turn knob to hot, but maybe for a couple minutes on freezing weather then turn knob back to coldest position and that will be the constant warm air with AC off. In the summer months AC works great with temperature knob all the way cold. One click turning knob off cold, air blows warm. / Now I did notice one time I had reached my destination with AC on and temp knob one or two clicks off coldest setting because I was freezing, then I cut the car off and when I returned and started car the AC was regulated comfortably above coldest setting. But once I turn temp knob, it's back to either cold only on coldest temp setting or warm air one click off coldest setting. And of course warm air through dash vents with nothing on. Also I do hear a large vent door flap closing or opening real hard in the back of vehicle when I first accelerate out of my driveway, don't know what that is or if it has anything to do with my issue. I know this was long, but any ideas you have on this would be good. Thanks.
It seems possible that the actuator is not working correctly. I would follow the steps in this video and see what you find.
@@carapprenticeThanks, I will do that.
Where is the top starter bolt placed ??

eBay has become a haven for counterfeit items. I'm hoping this video is helpful in avoiding fake Honda parts. One note: I forgot that some Honda parts are made in Mexico, Thailand, and other countries. Hey I need help with locating the dash lights I want mine to look like yours with the white lights, I took my cluster out but don’t know where all the bulbs are located or even witch ones to get
I bought a cluster with the bulbs already installed. This 96-04 Acura RL Facebook group post should be useful: facebook.com/share/p/QwrhJMCX2qs33zdK/
Is it basically the same to do for the rear aswell?
The rear is very similar. Here's a link to the RL playlist that contains rear brake videos: ua-cam.com/video/yK05EtBvszg/v-deo.html
