    I never have felt so much of a "feeling being there" as in Curse.
    I think large part of that is great background art. I still would want to live in Blood Island.

      Thanks! I basically just drew and painted places I would want to go to and explore and vacation at. Luckily for me and the game lots of people want to go the same places I did!

      @@billtiller1754When I played the first Monkey Island as a kid, I noticed small details: When Guybrush stands at the beach on Monkey Island you can see the top of the mountain in the background, and when he's standing on the top of the mountain, you can see the beach with the banana tree. This blew mind. Unfortunately there's not much perspective stuff like this in Monkey2. But when Curse came out, I absolutely fell in love with the background art. I've spend hours checking out the details, looking at all the locations from different perspectives. I'd take screenshots of the artworks and compare it to the map view to see how accuratetly the world fits together. It's really awesome, and sadly wasn't done in any Monkey Island after Curse.

    It boggles my mind that future Monkey Island games didn't continue on the art style of Curse of Monkey Island.

      Every Monkey Island had its own unique art style.

      @@danielalbu Yep. Pretty much. I would have done a sequel to Curse but no one wanted to do one at the time and I wanted a break from MI , plus I wanted to work on a 3d Indy game so I went on to Indy Infinite Machine. Larry and Jonathan were inspired by Tim Schaffer's breaking out of doing old IP and creating new IP, so they wanted to do that too with a game called Vanishing Act which was inspired by the movie Baron Munchausen by Terry Gillian. Marketing I think was against doing that at the time though because it was a pure graphic adventure game, which they feared wasn't going to turn a profit. I disagree A LOT. Same thing happen years latter with Sam and Max Freelance Police I heard.

      They sort of did. While they didn't stay 2D, they kept the characteristic clouds that Tiller designed.

    • @billtiller1754
      @billtiller1754 Рік тому +4

      @@Blokewood3 Yeah. Those clouds are popular. They were really done on a whim to help break up the banding you would see in the sky due to having so few colors. Seems like most MI games after that kept them.

    I just want to leave my appreciation for A Vampyre Story here and mention how much it impacted my life. It's my favorite game and has been ever since I played it over 10 years ago.

    He has done the best the could both on Curse and Escape, he is a big factor Curse is my favourite game. The art on these games is epic.
    I would love to hear more about those games. I like he brought pirate stuff and went travelling before.
    Thank you very much for your work!
    I was not born when Curse came out but I supported him on Duke Grabowski.

    • @billtiller1754
      @billtiller1754 Рік тому +5

      Glad you helped with Duke. That was a fun game. I think there may be a good chance I can get the next four chapters done. Crossing my fingers! And I didn't do much of anything on Escape. I just recommended Kathy Hsieh, who had colored backgrounds in Curse, be the lead artist on Escape- keep the lineage going visually. I made some suggestions but I don't think anyone wanted my suggestions.

    Thank you to Bill and Daniel for this wonderful talk! In addition to all the wonderful stories from throughout Bill's career, it's great to hear so many details about one of my all-time favourite games (MI3). I still dream of a high-res remaster/remake, with ample budget and time to flesh out the final third of the game. It was especially exciting to hear Bill mention he'd love to work on such a project at the end (3:44:39). I will definitely buy it, so until it's announced, I'm going to imagine it into being. ✴

      @@danielalbu I just watched it! It sounds like there's a lot of things he'd like to change, so who do we have to talk to in order to make MI3: Special Edition happen? Like you said, all the 90s kids who grew up with it are adults now, and we treasure all those games!

    Another great meaty interview! Thanks!! Curse is still one of the best looking games ever, so lush. I remember getting it for christmas when it came out and pretty much being immersed in that world for the rest of the holiday, the music and art creates such an amazing atmosphere. Though I was aware of Bills name as a background guy since the Dig, he was involved in so much stuff I was never aware of. Very cool to hear these stories. I have to try his own original games at some point, been meaning to for years.
    Not too sure about the potato chip analogy =D

    Would love to see any Curse related artwork you did, I loved the barbery coast recent work too, how possible do you think is that CMI is gonna get remastered (or better remade). Was the production time small and the game ended too fast? I liked the style of Return but I was bummed when I did not see your name there.

    • @billtiller1754

      I couldn't tell you. I have not talked to Lucas about it at all. I'm focusing right now on A Vampyre Story 2. But afterwards I would make a proposal to do it. I'd at least like to repaint the backgrounds. And I'd love to make the animation 3d, but I don't think Larry would want to do it- too much like Lucas redoing the affects for the original trilogy is I think what he said. But who knows. Its really up to Lucas Arts what, when and with who they want to to do anything with. I'm glad you liked the new Barbery Coast art. I was having fun doing it. It was sort of a proof of concept to see what it would look like.

    MK3 is still a great game (minus the ugly and tedious rollercoaster ending).
    Vampyre story lacks soul, interesting backgrounds or characters. The sequel unfortunately doesn’t appear to do anything different.

    @billtiller1754 sorry you didn't get to ride the gokart !!! you deserve it !! so great to hear the DIG anectodes ! what we would give to rummage those archives !! :D
    Personally I feel like the distant zommed out view due to the backgrounds being made for smaller, lower rez characters and the empty rooms in order to use the backgrounds without puzzles just added to the atmosphere and made for a more unique game^^ The DIG is the one adventure game where I'm not so compelled to double click "to edit out" and skip, and I'd rather bask on it's beauty.
    Thanks again for another great conversation Bill & Daniel.
