    I owned this car for 2 years but I’m selling it because I don’t want to mix track days and my daily. Modding it is awesome there is plenty of power there, a little bit more reliable than the EJ, and the 2015 chassis is perfectly stiffened up. BUT it runs hot for track days, the drive train is all open differential, and the trans can’t handle as much abuse.
    These have a lot of potential, David you should see the WRXs being built in the northeast; the well built ones are untouchable.

      Revo900 shouldn’t be taking a car like this to a road course lol, not what it was meant for

    • @Revo900
      @Revo900 6 років тому +6

      Snoggatog No car that is in mass production is made for road courses lol. But a lot of people like to take them out and see what they got. Some perform better than others. You can’t say a Miata was made to be put on the track but they’re the best cars you can buy and race in the same day.
      My experience with this car on the track showed where it excelled and where it lacked in comparison to its big brother (sti).

      Spot on!! only recently found out WRX not good for track with all open diffs front and back, most WRX owners don't know that and think AWD is same as STI that has all the front and center and rear Limited Slip diffs that make them handle well.

    David, thank you for continuing the conversation on the WRX/STi. I think this car specifically holds an interesting place in car culture. The looks can be divisive, the prices are becoming more affordable and bought by lots of different types of drivers, the performance is aging, and reliability is notorious. But the sound is iconic, the community is massive, aftermarket support-second to none, and driving experience is generally satisfying. As the owner of a GR STi hatch, I love my car. It’s more function over form, and fits all of my needs as a daily driver: fast, spacious, and enjoyable. Undoubtedly there’s a charm to Subaru’s, but there is also a lot to criticize. Overall, I agree with both discussion videos; you’ve made valid points, and have genuine interest in this topic. Is the WRX/STi the best car in the world, or even in it’s current (STi) segment? I’d argue no. But it remains an important car.

      Lifted Andreas....sure, but some people's opinions are dumb and not grounded in logic, but rather emotion. That is the problem these days....in many cases there IS a right answer given set parameters. There are some really dumb people out there that base opinions solely on gut feel.....that is fine and their choice, but that doesn't mean they aren't a fucking idiot. You sound like one of those people.

    • @mroberts7519

      Lifted Andreas, and since I feel you are one of those people let me make sure to make it REALLLL clear. I said in many cases there is a right answer GIVEN SET PARAMETERS. If you don't know what that means then you are definitely one of the people I am referring to....and no I don't have an opinion about the WRX vs. STI...I just get annoyed when people say stuff like "*because everyone deserves to have an opinion?"...sounds cucky.

      Michael Roberts given set parameters of his comment to a rather humorous post I think ur a bag of dicks.i don’t think it’s logical that you can’t produce an opinion on the wrx sti question surrounding this video based on your current parameters or requirements in your life not a gut feeling,plus u just sound like a jackass for being such a dick.perhaps he feels the wrx is a better car for his set parameters whether that’s logical to you or not kno body gives a fuck

    • @IAMPOPP
      @IAMPOPP 4 роки тому +12

      Yup. But they didn't and now they are doing their best to justify it. None of it matters though, it's all preference and how deep pockets are. I think BOTH the WRX and the STI are magnificent cars. I love the fact that they are almost identical but have a different drive train. I love my EJ25 engine. I love the Subie Rumble. Those that bought the WRX love the FA20. They love their car. Owning a STI I have no hate towards WRX owners. I love seeing anyone with a Subaru period. Most Subaru owners are PASSIONATE about their cars, WRX and STI are gaurenteed to love their cars and be passionate about it. My wife has owned only Jeeps and their community is similar. Waves when passing, modifying their Jeeps, and as we race or Rally our cars, they go offroading. Very similar.
      If you own a Subaru WRX and hate on STI's your not doing it right. If you own an STI and hate on WRX's, your not doing it right.

    The reason I'm thinking of trading up to an STi is the lack of fueling available aftermarket fueling. I can't run E85. Also there's a huge problem with DAM fluctuating on 91 and 93. The FA, in stock form, I think is better, personally, for a daily driver, but modifying the STi is much easier than a WRX due to the fact that it's been around in the aftermarket for much longer.

    I absolutely love my 2015 wrx. 320 whp and still see over 30mpg on the highway. Low end torque and quick spool is great. The only thing I want from the sti is the transmission. The sti transmission is solid and more capable. But other than that I love the FA engine. Great choice and like he said the intake noise is so addicting driving around town. For a sport daily driver I'm happy.

    I work on Subarus. I like the WRX better. Especially doing oil changes, on the WRX the filter is right on the top and the drain plug is right on the bottom in the open. While on the STI the filter and drain plug is hidden behind a giant piece of fucking plastic with like 6 clips and like 4 screws. It's annoying to keep taking off and putting on. The WRX is also seems easier to drive than the STI although both of them are very easy to drive. The STI does pull harder though.

      Cris H I didn't like the rev hang, and after 4k rpms the car fell flat. I could feel the ecu constantly reduce timing. It's still a great car overall. Very comfortable to drive and nice. It's a good DD. I have an evo 8 as well. The sti is just more my style of car .

    I see what your saying value wise but with the sti, your getting all of the shortcomings y’all mentioned in this video and then some already addressed. It’s actually a great deal if you think about it. Just look at how much it is to really build a trans....and all the diffs....and axles. You’ll make up that price difference real quick once you start to really dig into it.

    How to tastefully modify the exterior of just about any car.
    1) Add wheels with the correct offset.
    2) Fit decent rubber
    3) Add coilovers and adjust so that your car passes the shoe test. Don't make the car look like it's on stilts, and don't lower it until it's scraping its belly.
    4) A four inch exhaust tip is generally overkill.
    That's it. Done. Your car now sits right on the road, and doesn't look like it's been painted with glue before ram-raiding the nearest tacky parts store.

    Lolwut did I hear? 1/10th the price?
    That means for $1000 you can:
    Upgrade brakes, put limited slip diffs front, center, and rear, add the secondary controllable center diff, heated Recaro power seat (limited), improved suspension, shorter ratio manual, am i missing anything?
    I want to know where you are getting that bargain!!!
    I've been trying to talk myself into the cvt wrx, but being a smartass here helped solidify wanting the sti. It is a lot extra for the money, and used, the price gap nearly disappears.
    Might be some amazing deals on the entire VA lineup next year with the FA24DIT in both WRX and STI trims.

    Better bearings, won't lean out easy and blow up, stronger material of the sidewalls in the cylinders, and like it was said, more low end torque. Only problem is rods are synonymous to piston failure, but after market, it's fine. Ej needs to leave since half a decade ago

    • @michaelbullington3182
      @michaelbullington3182 6 років тому +1

      Personally I'd bet on the reliability of closed deck EJ20 with forged pistons over an FA20 anyday; a modern EJ on those specs would take the cake.

    • @Iamdesignproducts
      @Iamdesignproducts 6 років тому +1

      The only downfall of the FA20 is the rods and then pistons. I've done a lot of research into these engines and common failures, and it seems like a real step in the right direction from the old EJ platform.

    • @nicholas5139
      @nicholas5139 6 років тому +2

      I AM Design Products Actually, you are right. Some people had the spun bearings nightmare, but that rarely happens rarely now. The pistons, like in #3 as typical subaru lol, can blow and detonate, more common than the bearings, but still not as common as the old ej. I just wish subaru would go with a closed deck like the 2.2; although price would rise, but still worth it.

    • @nicholas5139
      @nicholas5139 6 років тому +2

      Michael Bullington They actually use it for the jdm spec, but they add in the direct injection and I think the fa20 bearings. So all you would need is to do the forged pistons and you're good. Plus, a closed deck engine is the best engine.

    • @Iamdesignproducts
      @Iamdesignproducts 6 років тому +2

      No doubt, I'm planning on sticking with the FA20 motor for my long term build. This engine really likes to make power and torque, and closed deck is definitely the way to go, even with stock cylinders. Even at 400 hp this car's power to weight ratio rivals that of some very, very expensive cars!

    I had a 2013 WRX and the entire time wanted a STI. Any WRX owner who says they don't want an STI is lying. Look at this guys car, he's trying his best to make it appear to be an STI......I then leased a 2019 STI Limited with about a grand in extra's from factory. I put $5K down and lease the car for $350 a month. When I MAPerformace stage 2 my STI compared to the WRX I'll make a ton more HP and torque and have upgraded pistons from factory and a stout trans compared to a WRX.

  • @CrazyForCooCooPuffs

    I had a 2017 WRX, it was sketchy, didnt really like the fact that the AC compressor cycled automatically and you coudnt turn it off (this kills a 4 cylinder). The rev hang is horrible, first to second gear sucked, the shifter felt horrible (cable shifters suck ass) even after installing aftermarket bushings and shift gates, The engine sounds awesome with catless Jpipe and tomei. The car is really nice after you get rid of the TGV and EGR with a protune. Getting 300 miles on a tank is nice....what ever I bought a 2011 STi, stage 2 sounds great and yea it doesnt have low end torque but I'm much more confident with it than the FA20

      The Don some people just like the look of the wing. People also like to put in the sti seats. I dont think people wish they had an STI i think they like spending less money and getting pretty much the same car lol. I personally dont like the wing that much or care to upgrade my seats. Now thats a money waster lol. Thats why those things are not on my 2017 wrx. I got mine pushing 380hp at the crank, 336 whp and 340 torque reliably. Bren tuned as well. Stage 3 grimmspeed power package and with a nameless turboback exhaust. I’d say I got a much better set up than an STI, sooo no I don’t wish I had one😂 I don’t shit on people that have one either. All subies are great. Just depends on your preference🤷🏻‍♂️ I could do more mods to my car and still have less money invested than me buying an sti

    I think we are missing the bigger picture here. Its not that the STi is a terrible car its the old ass, outdated ass EJ25 Subaru has been using since the early 2000s . Lets face it Subaru is smart, they haven't changed the engine because the regular WRX does so well. soo why mess that up. they keep the EJ25 and they continue to sell a lot of WRX STi's and continue to sell a shit load of regular FA20 WRXs as well. its a win win for them. they put an FA25 motor or what ever they would call it in an STI no one would buy a regular WRX again. I know I wouldn't

    The WRX is for the DIY guy, who enjoys building from the bottom. The STi is a good out of the box track car. Can a WRX reach STi capabilities? Yes. But you'd be hitting the base price of an STi. The FA is so much easier to work on vs the EJ.

  • @mikehundredson584

    A stock WRX on 91 octane is not smooth, it has a horrible flat spot around 4500rpm - 5000rpm. For people who live in a state where 91 octane is the highest available I highly recommend a Cobb accessport. If I was going to mod it I would of kept my wrx but since I wanted a stock daily driver I traded my wrx for a STI. I already have a high hp 6062 powered EVO IX so that's why I needed a stock daily. If I was going to mod a Subaru though I'd go for the fa20 WRX.

    I don't see many wrx/STIs not tastefully done. You see the memes of "Subaru starter pack; intake, turbo back, accessport" thats literally EVERY TURBO CARS STARTER PACK.
    Sure there's a segment of people of like stanced cars, blast pipes whatever, but that's literally every make of car that has those groups. Then you get these guys who buy a WRX and still don't have the backbone to "defend" (not the right word I know), STis, just cause they didn't buy one.

    • @michaelbullington3182
      @michaelbullington3182 6 років тому

      Tune and Intake (Stage 1) on an FA will make the same power as a tune and 3inch downpipe (Stage 2) on an EJ; IMHO, barring the fact that reliability of both drops off after that point.

  • @jerrys7261
