- Most...difficult...song...EVER! OK, maybe not, but definitely the most technically difficult song I've ever attempted - BTBAM Lunar Wilderness. This one pushed me to the absolute limits.
I still hadn't entirely learned the ending to the song when I decided to do a draft recording to see if all the cameras and mics were working. I ended up getting through to the end, which was pretty much a miracle and was the reason for my facial expression after getting over the hump at 6:50 :-) Thankfully all of the hardest parts had passed. It was funny for me to watch the video on this one - I was so much in the zone that I was making all of these unconscious facial expressions, talking to myself and even yelling in parts, lol.
I worked hard trying to learn all of the madness in this one. Blake Richardson is without a doubt a phenom. He threw everything including the kitchen sink at this song. I spent many hours practicing the busy fills, blast beats, and even the sticking patterns on the slow jazzy parts. I have tons of respect for Richardson - not only does he play this about as close to perfect as humanly possible, but he also created these insane drum parts. I know I didn't play it exactly like him, but I tried to stay as close as possible. Each time I listen to the song, I hear new accents or note patterns that I didn't catch the first 50 times I listened. But I'm so glad I took this journey - it's such an epic song.

DO MORE BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME PLEASE!!!!!!!
I come back to this video every few months, not only because it's one of their best songs, but because of your absolute uncontested crushing of this cover. Love your work.
***** Thanks man...this was definitely one of the most challenging songs I've ever attempted. Richardson is an absolute maniac, haha.
11/05/2024 incredible drummer!
I just love the expression in the lead to the outro "chorus" where he knows he has aced this song. The man is a pro.
Haha! The priceless look on the face when you get over that hump. I know that feeling...
I think I've commented on this one before, but since I refreshed my memory by watching your efforts again, I just wanted to say you did a great job. Blake Richardson is by far one of the most skilled and talented individuals I've ever witnessed on a set, and you did an excellent job. You kick ass, man! I fucking love BTBAM!
Man, it feels like we are kindred spirits with each new song you cover. Amazing work and tastes
Richardson's drumming is some of the hardest stuff to cover, especially how long all BTBAM's songs are. Saying you killed it is an understatement. I know the exact feeling of getting past that one part of a song, excellent job
haha man that face at 6:50. Too good. I'm no drummer, but even i can recognize how technical this song is. Very good job
This song is god tier level difficult. Especially 6:30 to 6:50
Holy cow! That was freaking amazing! I also liked when you completed each difficult section and smiled almost like "nailed it ". Haha!
This song is godlike on drums. Pure heaven
Wow... that was quite an undertaking John! Great job! Great timing and BLAST BEATS! Thanks for sharing your talent with us!
holy stick flip at 2:52 that was amazing! good cover man. good song to pick as well, that intro is nice aint it
Jazz and Metal in its beautiful form.
“Ohhhhhh. The empty space of home”
Beautiful bro.
"Home, the empty space of home"
I love this song so much. I think you and Blake may be the only two people on this planet that can play it this well haha. Absolutely amazing
This is just incredible. There are 3 people who are blind or something. You are so good! It most feel great to play this song this perfect!!
Yeah man this is probably you're strongest video. I've attempted btbam songs in practice, but this is phenominal.
Fucking KILLED it man. I dont think anyone write such diverse and complex drum parts like Blake Richardson does. And you were the perfect doppelganger.
I read your article on the early and pre-human diet! Not only an amazingly talented musician and a but a Ph.D in Anthropology? My respects for the work and dedication you've put into this, I seriously look up to you. I'm also amazed by the fact that you sound better with every video, however impossible that might seem!
This probably took so much effort. Props to you Johnkew, you've done an incredible job.
John, as a fan of BTBAM, that was epic, but as a fellow drummer, that was art. Everything was played beautifully, and your stick control is up there with Blake himself. 2013, lookin' pretty damn good.
THAT FACE @6:50 RELIEF. Love it, great job.
Thank you! Seriously, listening to that recording over and over, it's amazing how cleanly Blake plays it.
Don't know the band. Read from your post about it and, you know, just a click and let's see. Man, even not knowing the song, I can see the hard work, and only listening could tell it's perfect. Nice job!
Dude... Are you kidding me? I'm a drummer, and I can handle 1980's cockblock rock and 1990's grunge, but this? This is another level altogether. A level I didn't even know existed. I mean, I knew about GROWL metal, but this shit is actually melodic. Well, to some extent. Anyway, I'm about to totally rethink my approach based on this vid. Bravo!
Well done, man! Fucking wonderful cover. Blake would be proud!
outstanding work my man, bbtam is one of my favorites. I've watched all your videos and I'm really impressed by this one. keep it up!!!
So clean and powerful, you have really become an amazing drummer in the last year or so when you started recording in your kids play room in the basement! Rock on brotha!!!
kudos to you man! hats way way off,,,i cant even begin to imagine how unwieldy it would be to memorize and flawlessly fulfill !!!!!
Best btbam cover on youtube as far as i'm concerned. Would love to see you tackle more of their tunes.
Cymbals are mixed/edited perfectly! Very nice cover
You talk about Peart been a beast on another post. Man, here seems like you'be been like that. Wow. Don't know the band or song, but could say you'be done it right. What a hard work dude!!! It sounded just great!!
good stuff man...it is truly a great accomplishment to be able to to comprehend all of the intricacies in this song let alone play them....well done sir you should be proud
Makes me wanna cry, sooo beautiful! Amazing job dude
simply brilliant; congratulations on completing such a piece.
This is just about it - I really enjoyed this video! Your videos are nice edited between the views from each part played, each one I heard sounded great, very well captured and mixed, you got style, and descriptions are rich in details. I started from Tool and could not stop it. Go ahead bro, I know it's a hard work to get it done, but you've got what is needed, and the key thing is - have fun with it. Best regards, Roger.
Cheers! This took countless hours, but it became an obsession after a while.
Waw! This song is one of the sickest song I know on drums (with Bleed by Meshuggah and To Walk Among Them by Hacride) and you just did it man!!! It's so pleasant to watch and to listen :) Great job!
You´re an amzing drummer, thanks for putting these videos up!
Truly amazing.
That track is difficult enough to listen to, let alone drum!
(applause)
You have my favorite Careyl covers, now my favorite Richardson's cover as well.
ahaa not a problem! absolutely amazing drumming by the way! i look forward to more from you! :)
No doubt, I'd say so. It's so, so hard to get in another musician's head on technically challenging pieces. Awesome playing, man. As a bassist, I love playing with a technically solid drummer such as yourself.
Respect man, thats a hard band to cover and you nailed it
HI Eric,I've heard a lot of folks who are in the same boat as you-loving the drums but not the vocal style. It took me a while to warm up to the screaming too, but now that I have, these guys are the real deal.
I love this song. Sick band and sick cover!
Good job! That stack sounds sooooo awesome!
Great drum mix, sounds SOOOO good
This ist just awesome =D !! You are for me an inspiring hero in playing drums, thank you =)
BTBAM!
Sick cover John, I love the new studio!
I was not disappointed! I mentioned how excited I was about this on the Bruno Mars cover - this was well worth the wait.
Favourite bit of the entire album - 3:35 - particularly for the cymbal work!
Fanfuckingtastic effort dude.
Oh. My. God. Dude, you are so awesome!!!
Hahaha 6:50 "Yes! Nailed it!"
This is awesome man. Thank you for uploading your genius.
Hahaha! Man, that song looked like it kicked your ass in the end! You did great though! Blake Richardson is one of my favorite drummers, but you nailed it. Great job bro!
That little trick @2:50!! Insane god damn cover. Well done, Sir. :)
Greatest cover yet!
It takes balls to even remotely SOUND like Blake Richardson, but you nailed it my friend. Amazing work.
Thanks for clearing that up for me :) can't wait to see more from you, take care

2:07-2:20 is just pure fucking brilliance. amazing cover, man. *standing ovation*
dude this is amazing.
Thanks man, and I definitely watched Blake's video while learning this.
Sick cover; you're definitely one of the best 'youtube drummers'.
I like your thinking-these are some of my favorite parts too. There's so much going on in this, it's hard to pick out favorite fills, but these are definitely standouts. The one at 2:05 was and the following groove were particularly hard to learn.
Amazing cover man!
Great cover, mate! Great video work as well, who ever did it!
Damn John, that made my head hurt in a good way. Wow, unbelievable playing on that one. I myself have never heard of the band, and I listened to it three times trying to catch stuff that I missed watching it, lol. Well, now time for me to go play for awhile and punish some cymbals. Oh, and get well soon man, Hate to hear about the hip.
3:35 I caught that back sticking the snare drum, Very nice man!
Wow, man, that was some tough firckin' drumming! I found some parts of that song really interesting and I was hoping for more, but then they would change into something that just clashed too much for my tastes...and the only thing that kept my attention was the crazy awesome drumming!
Definitely hardcore drumming! :D
DUDE, you left me speechless! Great fucking job! A true inspiration!
Hi Ethan, thanks for this feedback. Maybe you're seeing the hand on the hi-hat? The reason being that the open hi-hat has much less rebound, so it was necessary to rebound the stick with my fingers while keeping the wrist still. But my grip has always been weird. It alternates between German and French, and in-between. To be honest, I was expecting to have to practice these fast blast beats a lot longer, but they came pretty easy. I guess whatever works :)
@kcbszone Thanks Kacey - the new studio is a lot of fun, especially being able to play at any hour of the day or night :-)
Been watching you for years and we have the exact same music interests! Just got a signed poster from Danny carey and signed drum head from Richardson all within this last month. Love me some Luke holland but you're still my favorite UA-cam drummer, keep going man!
Haha I was just gonna comment that I get that same exact smile every time I get to that point when playing this song
Dude you are nice! Sweet snare too. Astral Body has some really fun drums too!
Dude! Sick man!
Thank you so much John!!!!
Superb!!
You're amazing!
DUDE. this is amazing... PLEASE do more... I subscribed :)
Love it. good job man :D
Amazing man
@BurnThePope0514 This is GREAT feedback my friend, thanks! To answer your question above, I hardly ever do blast beats. They're a lot of fun though.
AWWW SHEET johnnys gettin physical!!! My favorite parts were....@2:05....@2:51 was way risky.. a stick flip ahhhh if i did that and failed i would've got so mad that i would have to start all over....@3:20...@3:58...@4:29...@5:21....@6:30 WAS BEASTLY!!!...& @8:04 you reached success:) GREAT JOB MAN wicked hard cover....
Nicest cover I've seen so far but it seems no one has quite nailed it.
WOW!!! Amazing work man,,, I'm sure this took lots of Hours to master,,, Excellent
So sick dude
@NYTROOPA Thanks Carm! Haha, like I said in the description, I wasn't conscious of my expressions.
Thanks Silvia, your feedback is much appreciated. I really enjoyed watching your videos too.
@Anthony Verdier Thanks Anthony- I seriously didn't know if I was going to make it through this song :)
Your drumming is amazing just as good as quality as all the videos you've put out! Please tell me what your hi hats are I'm dying to know :)
