Revisiting again this masterpiece after 9 years
Same
This is one of the best studio/live performances not just in metal, but music in general. This band doesn’t exist without any member, they’re all perfect.
Right here with you guys!
Amen!
back when the BAM was a fam.
Unpopular opinion: BTBAM performing 'The Parallax II' album in its entirety makes them one of the best bands of the 21st century.
Seeing them play Colors in its intirety was one of the most insane experiences of my life tbh.
@@sauced4183 god yeah when I got to seem them for the colors reunion tour a few years ago in Charlotte NC, it was so fucking good. They had to do a two nighter because it sold out so fast.
As someone who was front row in Philly, parallax 2 was a life time experience and I've seen them live 14 times now. Parallax 2 live from beginning to end was absolutely unforgettable
@@sauced4183 I saw them in Dallas, and I agree. The entire audience was in awe and just stood there in amazement. Sure there were a few pits, but mostly just jaws opened.
Definitely an unpopular opinion because of the genre but a correct opinion nonetheless
Btbam are literally the perfect representation of what a metal band should be and have consistently created great music without losing their edge.
That's very broad. I think they are perfect for their specific style. Totally agree about not losing their edge though
I appreciate the open-mindedness.
Like that's just like your opinion man. I'm into it though
I miss the old btbam. Mordecai, Alaska etc. but still enjoy their music now.
@@Hideousspawn13 I dont even think they have a specific style. These guys can literally play anything.
Back around 2000 or so I got to see Between the Buried and Me play what I believe was their first show ever. I think it was in Raleigh, NC. Back then Tommy and Paul were in the band, but Blake, Dusty, and Dan hadn't joined yet. Me and my friends weren't there to see them, and didn't know who they were. But about a minute or two into their set we're like, "Dude. Who ARE these guys?" I'm glad to see they're still pushing boundaries.
Did you see Prayer for Cleansing?
@@kekethebasedcat Nope. Never saw PFC
Glass Casket*
Do you remember the venue? Probably some valuable btbam history in there.
Love the Patton influence that shows in this piece. The "upside down" section remind me so much of Mr Bungle, in the best way.
Between The Buried And Me sends chills throughout my body!
BTBAM. What felt like 1 minute was actually 10 minutes... holy shit.
specialdefect describes my sex life, only in reverse.
specialdefect You just replied to yourself...
bmhyakiri good eye there
I just heard this band for the first time, and wow!!!!!!
The really interesting and unique orquestra part, to the amazing gutural vocals, to the great guitar solos and riffs, to all the prog influences... Man... and i really like their guitar tones. They sound really precise and crunchy, but not too overly distorted.
I saw their name and tought this was gonna be another generic metalcore band, but i was wrong.
They almost sound like a metal King Crimson.
@@CargoManshark Wow ! That`s really interesting. Thanks!
KC FTW!
This is the song that got me completely hooked on this band.
Same here.
Long time fan here, welcome aboard!
Kieran Wardle Will see them again next year, with Leprous and Devin. Sick lineup!
I love Paul's shredding glasses
I know everybody is up "Colors" butt and its a good album but this is the best BTBAM album hands down
Colors is better. The pacing of the album keeps you listening constantly, there's no musical breaks (besides viridian) that allow you to quit listening to it at any point, and the musical dynamics cause the next song to be anticipated (how Sun of Nothing builds up and climaxes at Ants of the Sky, making each new song it's own orgasm c;). The songs also don't have much uniformity, every song is completely distinguishable and almost sound as if each song was written by completely different musicians, but the album works very coherently. Prequel to the Sequel does not resemble Sun of Nothing at all, and neither resemble Ants of the Sky, etc, they are all full of impactful moments that are distinct and pave way perfectly for each other.
Parallax 2 is standard BTBAM, they've sounded like it since Great Misdirect. Colors, on the other hand, they'll never make an album like that again.
BassbaitGG Opinions are opinions, but I think Parallax II is a more accessible album to like than Colors. It took me 5 years to actually like BTBAM. I played the hell out of their songs on Rock Band, but I couldn't actually just listen to their music. It wasn't until Parallax II that I could enjoy their music. Now I really like Colors and all their other albums, but Parallax is definitely a more cohesive and structured album for me, and I think that's why it's a better album.
Aaron Chisholm I disagree on the structure, I disagree on accessibility, and I disagree on it being better. Just read what I already said for structure and it being better, but in terms of accessibility, Colors has those moments like "feed me fear", "I'm floating towards the sun", "sleep on", etc, the sing along moments. Parallax 2 doesn't have that as much, since it's a concept album and doesn't have as overarching of a reach in that regards. Don't get me wrong I love the Parallax series but Colors is just much more important on most levels. Conceptually, Parallax is better but in almost every other way I'd say Colors wins.
It's okay man, I'm in the minority who thinks TGM was their best. And if it isn't their best technically, then it's still definitely my favorite. I just love the mood of that album, it's dark and mysterious, and so raw for a progressive album. I do love the Parallax series and would call it their most "accomplished" work, but there's something about TGM that completely hypnotizes me, catches my attention completely, and works up my emotions. Cheers!
Agreed. Parallax 2 blows Colors out of the water.
These guys are pretty flawless live.
Paul's moustache is so fabulous..
So good all I could do is laugh
+Andrew Cox i know exactly what you mean
Seriously, one of my all time favorite bands. I've seen them live about 5 times. Unreal live performances.
These guys Do Not get the recognition or credit they deserve dammit. I'm no huge fan either of the genre or music but their technical ability and writing is what makes this band special for me. The anatomy of and colors are my personal faves.
5:20 to 5:37 is one of my favorite things. What a brilliant band.
Exactly
Pretty Mr Bungly
And THAT, ladies and germs, is how you TRULY PROG. Tommy's vocal control is insane!
As a vocalist, seeing Tommy do the "upside down dreaming" part live just leaves me with my mouth hanging open. Like fucking what dude
That rug really ties the room together.
I am 62 and play many instruments. My son was 27 when he turned me on to them because he said ",your master" is in this band. He was correct and i love it!!
Which one? They're all elite.
@@EAL2310 Blake Richardson, but yes for sure, they are at the top of their game!!
I'm disappointed in myself that I hadn't caught onto this sooner. Love Opeth, love djent, love classic prog in the vein of King Crimson, love bands like Ulcerate and Pyrrhon... These guys combine all the best elements of those into their sound.
Paul Waggoner seems an amazing guitarist, too.
Happy 10 year anniversary to an amazing album!
I love that they use the whole tone scale. A rarity in most music.
+Deconstructed 15 Because it's an otherworldy sounding scale that is rarely used and I appreciate it when bands step a bit outside of the box (not that BTBAM doesn't in other ways.)
+Whitest White I've been playing guitar seriously for about six years now but haven't really gotten into the technical aspect of theory until about two years ago. What exactly is that scale? The fact that you brought it up makes me want to dabble with it.
Neville Allen II It's a six note scale that is made up entirely of a whole step in between each note from the root. For example: G A B C# D# F. You can play it over Dominant 7 chords to start experimenting with it. I recommend the Jazz Tutorials "4 exotic jazz scales..." video. Also, it's more of a "hit and run" scale, so use it wisely or else you'll hurt people's ears 😘.
Whitest White so noted lol
+Whitest White Protest the hero use it the right way too :) I love it but I have to be in that prog mood to appreciate it. Otherwise, I'll lose interest and skip the song and play a melodic minor song to fit my mood haha. #noonecaresss

Xylophone player rocking a Leviathan t-shirt. Respect.
You wouldn't happen to know where that shirt could be found? I've checked everywhere, and I can only find that specific design split across 3 different shirts.
DC Blunt I didn't notice that until you pointed it out. Thanks lol
pretty sure hes the original drummer from their first album as well.
Yep, it's Will Goodyear.
Marimba*
I CAN'T get enough of that switch up at 3:18
There's no way you write music like this without being a genius. All of them.
First time hearing this band. Unbelievably good. So glad I found this!
I got into them early this month too but I had heard them before (Colours and Alaska). Became a fan after listening to Coma Ecliptic
I hope they never stop making music. They are the Rush of our generation.
If you're having trouble getting into this band because maybe they feel "overcomposed" or they never really sit on a groove like other prog bands, go see them live. Even if you have to drive a couple hours. I once thought these guys were just arbitrarily playing hard shit, but after I saw them go on after TesseracT (incredible performers as well) it all made sense. Dan Briggs isn't a human lol
“Arbitrariily playing hard shit” made my night haha.. i’ve just found these guys and loving every minute. Great stuff 🤘
preach man, dan briggs is so fucking underrated imo. his lines are always such a unique splash of sound to each track while still fitting exactly where its supposed to be
They're synthesizing from: King Crimson, Rush, Dream Theater, Megadeth, Metallica, Talking Heads, Yes, and I don't know how many other elements of not just progrock but all musics. 👍👍👍
it all makes sense.. we’re capable of beautyyyy
I saw them live in Denver before knowing who they even were at the time... Fan for life.
Amazing, well executed, raw, technical, progish, odd meter grooves with blastbeats, great work on the vocals. This is good shit. Apparently 93,000 people knew before me, ughh. Thanks as always Metal Blade
Gotta love the granpa specs on Paul.
I just heard about these guys and had to check them out.. this is musicianship at its finest. A metal jam band. It reminds me of Cynic. This is amazing.
This is just PERFECT... unbelievable. Best Prog Metal act nowadays in my opinion. Very underrated band also in the world of Prog
Featuring L.A. Beast on drums
Have a good day!
+Sir Bomb Blake should consume a crystal pepsi before playing
Lmao
Between the buried and me are so bad ass. My favorite band ever. They never fucking disappoint.
This band is a mix of Dream thester, Opeth and the Mars Volta.
Lucas Vieira and bit of mr bungle 🤟🏻
System of a down,LOG,Faith no more lol
With sprinkles of Korn and after the burial
Yes, and its too much!! They're overdoing it, could be great but now it's all a mess!!
@@kgbcorvette Nah just use your brain more
Each one of these guys have compete control, and mastery of their instruments. Its awesome. I see these guys live every chance I get. Can't beat it.
one of my friends introduced me to these guys and god damn i wish i knew them sooner. they seem to have created their own unique sound. very progressive and very heavy
Im hoping they do a Future Sequence 10th Anniversary tour cuz I absolutely fucking need to hear it live in its entirety again.
I was lucky enough to see the album played live in entirety, I would definitely do it again if given the chance, so good.
You're in luck
GUESS WHAT
HEHEHEHEH
Parallax II tour going on right now in 2023.
Blake Richardson.
You could really put any name there, they're all just over the top talented.
Makes me feel like I should never pick up a drumstick again
This is all that needs to be said.
God's real name.
thats all you had to say
Musical craftsmanship at its finest.
IT'S HAPPENING, WE'RE GETTING A TOUR OF PARALLAX II! EVERYONE STAY CALM
i love this band
How have I missed these guys for so long...
They're all technical beasts, but Waggoner just brings such a diverse mix of styles in one single song that it's hard not to start fawning over everything they do.
No matter how many time you see or hear it, it is still jaw dropping each and every time. An absolute incredible display of musical talent and professionalism. Great work guys!
Perfection in every aspect of metal
there's no way they're playing this live. this is too fucking good. how the hell
I've seen them live, and that was a number of years ago, and I can tell you that they are indeed THAT spot-on live, it's unreal how talented these dudes are
Saw them play this entire album straight through in Chicago. It was just as good as this.
The sound is being recorded and then mixed with the video. Reason why you don't get the "live" feeling. However, they are that good to play everything correctly while being recorded.
I've seen them live twice and I can tell you they definitely are that good! First time I saw them was right before they released TGM, and they played most of Colors and Alaska, and also gave us a peak at TGM by playing "Obfuscation." Second time I saw them was a year ago and they played Parallax 2 in it's entirety. I was completely blown away (not to mention that their encore was "White Walls").
Well, they've been touring for the last two years doing this exact performance every night. Practice makes perfect, no?
So refreshing to find artists who actually give a shit about their art and put real 'honest to music' effort into it's creation.
BTBAM will never NOT be my favorite band of all time. 🤘
Love your music so much guys and thank you for coming to my shit little town all those years ago in Australia cheers
Holy shit, I have goosebumps all over my body. This sounds amazing, congrats BTBAM it's no wonder they continue to be my favorite band over the past 5-6 years.
One of my favorite bands
Pure talent! I remember seeing them live in Progressive Nations 2007, (or was it 2006? can't remember :P , they were with Dream Theater, and Opeth, great concert) and they sounded just as good. They have aged well! Sounding better even!
2008 lol
Still one of the best metal fusion bands I've ever heard. How they don't do a world tour every year is beyond me.
I'm not really into this kind of metal, but watching these guys play is actually quite fun. Some serious chops here!
They are in a league of their own when it comes to prog metal.
Can't wait for the 10 year anniversary tour for this album! Let's go!
A couple of years ago I was suffering from the absolute worst anxiety I have ever experienced in my entire life. Placing and receiving phone calls was a very big part of a very new job for me at the time. I did the work I needed to each day but every second not spent on the phone was spent watching this video. It calmed me and made everything better when I was able to focus just on it. I'm not one to throw this comment around but this is an absolute work of art. I admit, I am one of those "Alaska and prior" fans but this is just so beautiful aurally and visually. Beautifully written, performed and directed. Thank you.
I struggled with very bad anxiety for a while and music was one of the few things that helped. Hope you're doing better now, man.
@@max3446 I actually got sober a little bit after I made that comment. Got into treatment and have since been working on my mental health. I was diagnosed with Bipolar I, Anxiety disorder and PTSD. It was a game changer. Still sober(6 years in August) and seeing a therapist. I really hated the idea of medication but I've made my peace with it. It has made things a lot easier. Sorry for the rant. Though never perfect, things are much better now. Such is life. I appreciate you asking.
Awesome! can't stop listening to this band, how have I never heard of them??!!!
This is one of the greatest music videos of all time.
Btbam has the perfect road trip music. After half an album you are probably already there
These guys always kill it.
they are incredible in all aspects. and so original, special unique
Before meeting this band, I thought Persefone had the most versatile style in metal.
Persefone is a great, amazing band, but BTBAM is simply next level.
It's like a collection of expert musicians carefully chosen and put together.
Absolutely fantastic. Very talented group of dudes.
I almost forgot to watch this today
What a musical journey this track is
Guitarist looking like a university music professor
Mixed with Lemmy ;)
Mixed with Father Time
Probably is lol.
Foghat's roadie finally got his day in the sun.
The whole band looks like music professors
These guys have been blowing my mind for over a decade now.
how the hell do they do it? They sound better live than on their studio recordings.
You should see em live it's insane..the played colors all the way thru no bs just straight music for an hr plus
@@Zee-hl5iu Yeah, i've seen them do Colors and Parallax II live. These guys are not the same species as the rest of us. Fucking virtuoso shit.
@@Zee-hl5iu i shit myself seeing them live man. its an out of body experience. theyre fucking kings
I like this version more than the album version actually
Just saw these guys in Regina, SK. I've been listening to the their music for a few years now, but never had the opportunity to see them performing live. What an amazing performance. Great musicians!
1:33 when you realize how delicious your own riff is
I love that fkn riff so much
The 1st and 2nd verse riffs from Extremophile Elite and Silent Flight Parliament are my favorites off of the album.
im so glad i got this album the day of release. its too good to not own
That bass player is a beast!!!
This is my favorite band in their element. It’s like a masterclass in prog
All of us growing up as young musicians, hearing our favorite bands and seeing their greatness live, I've always dreamt of having a rig like some of these brilliant musicians. Racks, 4x cabs, the whole 9 yards. These rigs cost thousands of dollars, so it's always been more of a dream than a reality.
Finally, my dream has come to fruition. That Synth stand that Tommy is rocking out on is an X series ultra mod Keyboard stand. That bad boy has 2 adjustable heights and no-slip grips on the feet. You read that right: 2 adjustable heights!!! Stomp around all you want and growl to your hearts' discontent: those keys are going NOWHERE.
I see you guys commenting on the guitar muscianship and the spot on drumming, but why has nobody yet mentioned the methodical and dare I say calculated? way Tommy's keys are being presented. Gives me chills..
LOVE this, by the way. blows my mind that this is live. most bands can't perform this well after production, you guys kick in teeth from the start.
I think most people that listen to metal, and ESPECIALLY prog, don't appreciate keys unless they are forefront and shredding. If you listen to Porcupine Tree or Opeth, the keys are not the focus, they are used for ambience and atmosphere. It isn't flashy, so most people don't notice it. Which is sad, because if you listen with good speakers or headphones, you can hear some absolutely haunting sounds that complete the whole picture.
I love the level of the professionalism of this band. Everything looks so decent and expensive. Great band)
Now that I see they have every instrument, there is no way I don't buy this.....
I completely agree! It's awesome to see the input from other musicians that went into the cd. I'm hoping they're going to show someone playing the woodblocks and slide whistle in bloom.
Whoa. Just found this song!
Amazing song! And in a weird way I found it soo relaxing!
The drummer rocks! :D
What fireworks! A masterpiece! BTBAM is so great! I love it.❤❤❤
dude on the xylophone rockin the fuck out
Saw these guys in 2008 on the Progressive Nation tour with Dream Theater. I was there to see DT but i'm glad I was able to see them too. I didn't know who they were then, but I do now and I love them. They were playing mostly stuff from colors. Fucking amazing band.

This is a formal request to modify that man into a meme.
Oh my god you're right
Joe Lackey Its Grandpa-ul Waggoner!
Joe Lackey here you go my friend
I'm not really a meme person so you guys can come up with a better text if you want :D

He keeps getting older, they stay the same age.
+Mark Smelser Alright alright alright
i keep coming back to this. i love it so much
8:02 is how heaven feels like
One of my favorite bands ever! Grew up playing music and one time in Portland there was a 2 story venue and I got to play a show at the same building BTBAM was playing. So fun to meet these guys and very impressed how far they have come!
Damn Blake Richardson really brings out the potential of BTBAM.. such a signature style of playing
I snagged the Alaska album maybe back in ‘05 mostly because I was living in Alaska and I totally fell in love with it! The album AND the state.
I’m wondering though, why don’t people either know about these guys or have hate for em? They’re badass!
Because “people” are a bunch of entitled, greedy, non-contributing zeroes.
Man, the throwback to Specular Reflection never ceases to floor me. :D 8:00
i LOVE when bands do that.
GlassMetropolis yup - really ties an album/concept/theme together...like a nice rug. So long as you don't wear your shoes on it.
Ran into yalls bass player at the most recent show in ATL. one of the nicest people ive ever met. Im really glad i got to see yall live i really hope i get to again
Xylophonist with a Leviathan shirt.
I can dig it.
paul comes up from the ether with his genius and i'm here for it
wtf why did it take me so long to appreciate this
It's like classical music, someone just isn't familiarized with the structure, all the changes, the chord progressio, all the harmony itself and you have to dig it, so it takes a few listenings to understand and appreciate.
i really love how they their instruments
BTBAM really surprised me with this album. I thought they were sort of getting boring after Great Misdirect and Parallax 1, then Parallax 2 came out and holy shit. It's like they're a brand new band, it was one of my favourite albums of 2012, and thats saying a lot since that year had some major releases. They sorta took this prog thing and ran with it, the first song on their new album sounds awesome too. Look forward to these guys continuing on over the years.
empire yeah 2012 was amazing for most core genres.
cro508 Core sucks, I dont care about core.
This is math core though........
cro508 it's prog metal. Core sucks, in my opinion.
Here we go, another genre argument. If it has breakdowns, screaming, singing and crazy riffs, it's core. That's kind of a rule of thumb.
absolutely unbelievable piece of musicianship...amazing
Ten years has past by, with laughter and tears. Do you remember when we went to the zoo, and that time we drank all the beers!!!! .................I promise to love you for 50 years more, even if you don't seem............. so hardcore!!!!.............Thank You Paul for doing Colors tab book almost 10 years ago, and the rest of you for making a smash record!!! You created another monster!!! Now days i'm swaggin on the dragon!! Kragen Lum and I are working on all my bad habits with guitar playing, And being the recovering alcoholic I am, i'm 2 years sober and never had more Love or appreciation for the beautiful things in life!!!!>..........Even though I haven't been down with most of the records after colors.......it still will live on.....maybe I will catch you for the 20 year anniversary tour of colors one day!!!!!!!!!! ..............do you guys remember Icon's last show in Buffalo......I was like 16 at the time and had mad hair.....but I was there!!!!! Thanks for the fist bump Briggs!!!!!! I FELT the POWER that day!!!........I actually walked out on selkies solo, that was the last song that night and went out for a smoke......and then you played Mordecai, and just as the solo kicked in while I was outside, fireworks started going off at the Bisons' stadium!!!! So I watched fireworks while listening to Mordecai solo!!!!......It was beautiful!!.......Peace
I should be working, but I'm so mesmerized by this performance I cannot look away!
