The irony is, this movie freaked me out enough as a young kid with all the violence that was left intact in the R-rated version. I wouldn't have considered this extended scene any more horrifying than every other violent moment in the film, so what does the MPAA really accomplish by telling filmmakers where they need to draw an arbitrary line?

This version of the scene is more satisfying than the theatrical version of the scene, because I really despised the villains in this movie, it is also more realistic since there is no piton gun that holds multiple pitons like that.

Having rewatched the movie recently, the way this scene is shot in the original cut is way better from a filming standpoint and a character standpoint. First, it shows that Hal didn't just come out of nowhere, he actually found Gabe and helped save him, which is a HUGE moment for his character given the fact that he still blamed Gabe for Sarah's death at the beginning of the film. Second, there's no way Gabe had more than one round in that harpoon gun or was able to reload that quickly (my guess is the studio wanted Stallone to get the kill here). And third, it shows why in the theatrical cut that Hal looks like he was taking aim with the shotgun when he's revealed to be in the area.

The temperature of that water under the ice was obviously something in the subzero range, therefore this scene was one of the most unrealistic parts of Cliffhanger. Gabe was in that bitterly freezing cold water for like two minutes aside from coming up once for air. In reality, if he had fallen through ice into that extremely freezing cold water for only about twenty-five to thirty seconds, he would have succumbed to hypothermia and have been dead. Then in the following scene after Hal pulls him out of the water, his hair is immediately dry and his condition is perfectly normal. An average person would not survive in bitterly freezing subzero temperature water for two minutes. At maximum, if someone was to fall through ice into water like that for about twelve to fifteen seconds and get rescued, it would take them a long time to have their condition thoroughly restored back to normal. They would be uncontrollably shaky with serious chills and it would still take a while for their body temperature to get back its regular setting.

@@robertgarcia7024 Of course I am! I actually saw this movie at a theater in my hometown of Missoula Montana back in 1993 when I was fourteen years old. I am a tremendous fan of Sylvester Stallone in general, but since Cliffhanger was far too unrealistic like this hokey scene here, I don't like this movie. I've seen numerous action movies from the eighties and nineties! For example, 1. Cobra 2. Lock Up 3. Nighthawks 4. First Blood 5. Tango And Cash (For Sylvester Stallone films) 1. Commando 2. The Running Man 3. True Lies 4. Predator 5. The Last Action Hero (For Arnold Schwarzenegger films) Then for random action movies from eighties and nineties, I've seen 1. Road House 2. Bad Boys (1983) 3. The Karate Kid (1984) 4. Robocop 5. Stone Cold 6. Young Guns 7. Speed 8. Bloodsport etc.
See? I'm familiar with movies from those two decades.

@Milos Miletic Because dude, if people are going to make movies, they have to make sure that certain things which happen are true to life! Otherwise, it's unrealistic and lacking seriousness. Nobody would survive being immersed in bitterly freezing cold subzero temperature water for two whole minutes! Gabe would have been dead in nearly twenty-five seconds if this was for real!

It’s a shame this never got an extended, unrated or director’s cut like RoboCop did with its extended or trimmed scenes that were cut to get an R-Rating.

Way interesting! Had no idea Tucker (Michael Rooker) killed him with the shotgun in the alternate cut. I prefer this over the R rated version, it's more realistic and suspenseful. I also always wondered why he had so many holes in him going down under the ice from just a nail gun XD. Great upload from a classic 90's action flick I grew up with! Thank you :D

pred8955 Nope, again, this one was a directorial choice, not censorship. I had the good fortune to speak to Rex Linn (who played Travers) and this is covered in the documentary I made. Some of the other violence in the film was indeed cut for an R, but Travers' death is not one of those instances.

If it wasn't for this extended footage, I still would have been convinced that Gabe shot Travers three times like it was edited to look like. Now I realize he only shot Travers once while under water and eventually Hal arrived and blew Travers away with three bullets.
However, speaking realistically, this scene was absolutely hokey. Look at how long Gabe was under ice for! In freezing cold subzero temperature water, he would have already suffered hypothermia in less than one minute and have been dead. Plus after Hal pulled him out of the water, in the next scene Gabe's hair was dry and his condition was perfectly normal. If an average person was to fall into freezing cold water for possibly about fifteen seconds or so and was rescued, their condition would obviously be very shaky with serious chills.
There were actually quite a few other scenes from this movie which also were completely phony.
