Oh and next time I'll use a more stable stand!
Awesome demo. I have a Jupiter 8, my third one in my lifetime. I remember when they were 600.00 back in the mid 90's. It's funny, because back then, digital was all the RAVE.. LOL Everyone was fascinated by the new LCD's and the piano patches that sounded more realistic for the time, you could hardly get rid of analog just like you can hardly get rid of a Baldwin organ today! The Jupiter 8 really is a dream to play and to look at.
I could listen to Dave play and talk about this synth for hours!
I had a Jupiter 6 for a decade, bought one in 1993 for $600 with a hard case and it was mint never used just sat in the case for years. It was probably the best synth Ive ever had. I never had a Jupiter 8 and at todays prices I wont ever but I have the Jupiter 8 plug out on the System 8 which sounds pretty damn sweet. I played a Jupiter 8 ages ago when it was newly released and I was impressed but too young to afford it! The synth was literally bigger than me.
Exactly. If there's one single word to describe the wonderful 12db filter on the Jupiter-8, it's "fizzy". Indeed, the 12db filter slope on the Jupiter-8 is unlike any other 12db I've heard on a polysynth.... it's fizzy as Pepsi!
It was Dave's excellent CS80 video that brought me to this. I have always seen the JP8 as my holy grail of synthesisers. I'll never afford one (except virtually) and its helped me understand and appreciate the JP8 even more than I did before. Thank you so much for such an informative and wonderful film
One of the coolest polys ever. Thanks for the video
When he mentioned the Memory Moog's unreliability issues...I immediately remembered the the time when poor Jean Michel Jarre's memory moog went haywire during a live concert of Oxegene...he persevered and somehow got it behaving normal again !
Great overview! But it missed one of my favorite features of the Jupiter-8 - all the arpeggiator modes (except Random) play in the order you played the notes. Many synths have a specific mode for this (which goes by many names, such as "Played", "As Played", "Order", "Assign", etc.), but on the Jupiter-8 it works in all the modes, which is super cool, because it means you can combine that with the other modes. If you just play a chord with good timing, it works like a standard arpeggiator, but if you play the notes in a specific order, they play in the same order in each octave as it goes up and/or down through the number of octaves you set. Fortunately Roland got this right on the System-8 version of the Jupiter-8.
I played with a JP8 at a music shop in the 1985. I really loved it. Sadly my family had just immigrated so it wasn't possible to buy it. One of my fave synth and a legend.
OMGosh! I heard sounds of the CARS, RUSH, Depeche Mode. I could also listen for hours! Great job.
Dave is such a great asset to the synth world, UA-cam and his software. We are sooooooooo lucky to have him in our world! Great video on the Jupiter. I am attempting to get the most out of my Jupiter (Boutique).
Just perfect. This instrument is a real gem and there has been nothing like it since. I think Roland need to re think their current products. Very informative Dave - Thank you. Love the piece at the end.
This is ultimately the best Jupiter-8 video ever made, such a great tutorial. Thank you very much!
Owned two of these over the years. First one was a 12 bit (sounded dark/creamy and warm) in 2001. Was a gigged board - bought it for £1300. Second one was a 14 bit (alot brighter and stable then the 12 bit). Purchased in 2007 for £3000. This was genuinely mint. Not the average crap you see selling on eBay for £17k+. My 14 bit was a genuine studio piece - there was no restoration needed. Cosmetically and electronically immaculate. Sadly, around this time I split up with a long term partner - when through a down period and made the decision to sell. I got my money (which at the time I thought was a good result). However, in hindsight - one of the poorest decisions I've ever made.
To all those who still dream of owning one. Unless you've got deep pockets - and can afford the £400+ annual service costs I would look elsewhere. They are a beautiful machine - very little compares - but the financial outlay will soon tarnish your dream of ownership. The best time to have picked these up was back in the early/mid 1990's.
I get you,I sold a load of gear in the 90s when I was skit. Roland’s Jupiter 8 vst Is pretty decent.
This has to be the most beautiful polysynth. The colour scheme and design of the panel layout is so pleasing. The sound isn't bad either, of course..
We need more of Dave on UA-cam, he's too knowledgeable and witty for only occasional appearances on SonicState.
Thanks Mr Spiers , another fine walkthrough.
Wonderful! Thanks so much for the video, really enjoyable.
Simply brilliant! Thanks Dave.
Loved this Dave, thanks for taking the time and effort to put this together!!!
Man I love ALL your videos guys!
Great overview and in-depth demo on the king of synths... the sound and harmonics are rich and full of life... so organic and powerful. Someday, I hope to own one myself... someday. ;)
Long live the Roland Jupiter 8!
Excellent in-depth and patience tutorial.. Looking forward to more! Cheers
Best tour of the Jupiter-8 ever done! I have always wanted one, but i don't $10,000 want one ;-) I think it's the most amazing sounding and most beautiful looking Roland of all time .Dream synth. So well done Dave, Thank You.
pleasant surprise this morning to see in my feed. first demo of the split sounds amazing thanks Dave!
Great video, love the time taken to go through all the details.
Best Jupiter 8 demo I've seen. I want!!
Awesome video. You really did it true justice. Beautiful sounds and tasteful playing as well !!
Love these videos!!! Keep it going!
Fabulous review of this magic machine with its epic sound! Thank you.
Well explained, knowledgeable and very well put together. All in all a great vid.
Nice One Dave cheered me up this morning
Found this after watching your CS-80 video. This, too, is a masterful look into a classic. Keep it up! Love your stuff.
This video has helped me a lot with using my Boutique JP-08! Thanks!
Thanks for uploading. This is just such a beautiful looking Instrument, I am drooling over this machine, and it sounds not too bad either. Roland Corp have produced some great gear, this has to top them all. Wonderful.
Thank you uploading this. This is my dream synth. I'll have to get it someday. :) Take care, Sam.
Best demo I found on the Jupiter 8, thank you!
That was so good. I loved the track at the end too! Very unexpected.
Incredible! I had one of these and had to eventually sell it. How I wish I still had it! It was great to stroll down memory lane watching you demonstrate it. Also let me give you a big compliment on the song you wrote at the end. It was great!
Fantastic demo of an iconic synth. Thank you.
independent pitch bend is very powerful
Exactly what I needed.. Thank you Dave
Beautiful demonstration - strangewise there are not too many really good walkthroughs of the Jupiter 8 in UA-cam and you've done a valuable addition. Hope to watch you soon again in the Sonic Talk.
Great video Dave Well done!
gr8 tutorial ..own one of these wonderful synths..the JP8 stil blows my mind😎
Dead good demonstration video Dave. Honestly this the best JP8 demo I have seen on UA-cam. Top marks! I enjoy your gameful frolics with the chaps on Sonic Talk on Wednesdays.
HI THANK YOU A LOT FOR YOUR DETAILED INFO, TIME AND FOR THE TOP REPORTS! I HAVE A LOT OF SEVERAL GEARS!
Absolutely perfect review! Saying it how it is without confusing the newish(bie) with synthesis! Very helpful indeed.
Best review of the great JP8 on YT! It's a monster synth and my object of desire.
Such an great demonstration. Like other people have said here, I could listen Dave's synth talk for hours. You covered every aspect of the mighty JP8 in such an logical and informative way. Big thank you :)
Amazing demo. Thank you.
That final track is excellent!
Excellent, Dave. Thanks!
well, this made my morning!
Awesome stuff as usual oh synth historian Dave! Please please do something similar like this for the CS-80! Kudos!!!
Perfect video.
11:08 As soon as I heard that sound I knew Cloudburst was coming 👌
In your hands it sounds brilliant,Dave
Loved the video!
Perfect video and thanks so much for uploading and sharing your guide light and step to step into how to use a 1981 Jupiter-8 in a proper way ! I am more inspired by you video and start save some money to buy one some day and I cant wait to get one hehehe
.
what a great machine! well done :)
Nicely done
my new favourite youtube video
AMAZING SYNTHESIZERS
Love the song at the end!
4:35... good lord that sounds great.
Lovely stuff. Not my words Dave, the words of Shakin Stevens.
You should do a CS-80 demo!
Very, very nice walk through of the Jupiter-8. This is just an iconic instrument... (sigh)
absolutely BEAST!!!
He does a lovely line in play out tunes, does our Dave.
awesome demo.
love the jam at the end...
Great walkthrough and gorgeous track at the end. In fact, a tutorial on that track alone would be superb.
And by the way I love the super fast filtered arpeggios in the final track. I'd love that patch.
Getting my full 45.48 attention, just explaining a synth's user interface, must qualify the JP8 as the most thought-through synth of all time! System 8 aside, why doesn't Roland make a quality 5 OCTAVE (only slightly slimmer) ACB replica, just with added MIDI, aftertouch, and chorus/reverb?
Thanks Dave!!
@7:33 I'm hearing the Z80 buzz bleed through.. A balanced cable to a balanced input on a mixer makes the JP8 absolute quiet.. I had a tech looking at this, couldn't solve it, till by coincendence I found out the problem was gone by connecting the JP with a balanced mic cable..
Beatiful sounds.. great presentation of what this iconic instrument is capable of.. (Y)
Loved Jupiter 8 for the synth loop on dreams of leaving by the human league on the travelouge CD so hypnotic
Fantastic
beautiful song at the end. Reminds me a bit to Grace Jones's slave to the rhythm album.
Other digital and analogue synths have similar ingredients: waveform oscillators, filters and envelopes. Some with excessive menu diving, others with lovely interface. Yet, very few really shine. I could convince myself my JD-XA hybrid synth can be the same as Jupiter 8, with as good performance controls. Jupiter 8 must be more than the sum of its parts.
Fantastic ! A video synth manual
emulation please :) you guys did an amazing job with Oddity, would love to see you guys do a jupiter remake!
Most in-depth demo of the J8 on youtube. I would not trade my Prophet-5 for one though. 😎😎😎
Very nice
Synthelicioso! Muy sabor!
Great video. Hey, by the way: anybody know whatever happened to that Jupiter 8 demo vid that for a long time back around 2010-2015-ish had the text written on the screen: “Thanks for making this the most watched Jupiter 8 demo on UA-cam!” ?? That was the best demo I’ve ever heard. Soundwise anyway. Not that this isn’t great-the guy just had some amazing sounds in his vid…I would just sure love to find that user again…
Dave yeah yeah
I have a JP8 with Grooves midi and. Memory expansion for 20 years. It's a sound monster i never ever will give away. It has such an organic sounds not like vst's
Awesome
That is such a mint Jup 8.
agree, thank you máster!
fantastic video, thank you! only problem is the synth price raised for another 500 $
It,s interesting, thank you
O MINE! ... sound so lovely
this is beautiful. could not afford a jp8 but got a jp-80, so the jp8's spirit lives in the 80. if you ever get your hands on a juno-60, id love to see you speak about it.
this video is just brilliant!
my biggest regret in life is selling my mint Jupiter 8 with all original programming cassette tapes and some kind of midi box which i had bought from Tony Kaye of yes band for lousy 1200. two decades later i still have nightmares about that.
Wauu Cool!!!
at 50 seconds I still have that Roland brochure in my loft though opted for the SH-09 back in the day followed by the SH-101
I've never wanted anything more than I want a Jupiter 8:( 20k is just so far out of reach
I often remember back in 1990, when I saw one for $1000, which was JUST about something I could maybe scrape together, but what the heck, they would only get cheaper, right? In a few years I would be able to afford one, right? By then they would be $800, and I would have higher salary, right? RIGHT?!?
Ugh. Bad choice.
Edit: Should note that my Deepmind 12 can do quite Jupitery sounds, so I'm OK. Doesn't look at good, though.
great demo! Please please do a demo of the Yamaha CS-80
