All because of a Japanese KFC franchisee coming up of a marketing campaign. It somehow convinced the majority of the Japanese public that Americans eat chicken, rather than turkey for Christmas. It was the 70s, not many could fact check'em back then.

According to a few Japanese users I follow on twitter, this film is kinda of a turning point in dinosaurs movies in Japan as after the release of Jurassic Park & later Walking with Dinosaurs, dinosaurs & paleontology in general became a popular interest & topic. As such, dinosaurs & other prehistoric creatures were depicted slightly more accurately in pop-culture over there. Just look at Rebirth of Mothra 3, the later remakes of Doreamon: Nobita's Dinosaur, & Magic Treehouse (yes, it's based on the American books) for example. Hell, there's a animated movie based on a prehistoric worm of all things called "Pikaia!".
@@AllisonPregler Yeah, it was an animated film. You would think a film based on a popular series of American childrens books would received an English dub, but it strangely didn't. Although it may have been released in Spanish speaking territories. Either way, I hear it was well received.
@@i.m.evilhomer5084 It's been a while but from what I've heard, the original author of the "Magic Treehouse" books said she liked the movie. However, she didn't want it dubbed because she was concerned that it would 'take away the magic of reading' if kids learned about the film.

It had this girl with a puppet squirrel in a kitchen making the chocolate hazelnut filling. In the comments on one upload of this particular ad was one that said "Hey! It's the cute police girl from Central Ikegami Police!". This was a police drama that was in Japanese for about 5 or 6 seasons and that girl in the ad was an actor in that show from season 4 onward. The actor's name in question: Yuko Ogura.

As someone who's seen this movie when they went thru their Clamp phase this. Yeah this is a weird one. Yet oddly normal for something based on a Clamp thing.
I feel like one could go through a CLAMP phase and never fully finish it, given there are projects they haven't really finished X/1999 afaik, even in the manga. It’s like an American movie from the 90’s through the eyes of the Japanese. Same thing happens when you watch a Japanese action movie, that is so clearly based on American action movies, and they do all the tropes found in American action movies but without exactly knowing why Americans do them. I also imagine that’s what it’s like when the Japanese and Chinese watch American action movies and suddenly everyone starts doing kung-fu and other Asian action movie things.

all within 5 years! *Mind Blown!*
And in Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla you have a kawaii dinosaur hatching from a giant egg that everyone wants, is raised by the female protagonist, and eventually winds up with a parent dinosaur
@@Tareltonlives oh yeah, they did do that with Godzilla Junior. I almost forgot about that. it's been a while since I've watched the Heisei films.
Coca-Cola and cocaine smuggling? Sounds like Christmas!
Merry Dinomas Allison & Phelan! And Have A Happy Noob Year! XD
Phelous and Lupa: I dunno if it's stupid or lost in translation.
Anime fans: What are they talking about, this is perfectly fine, smart and normal dialogue.
Nah, I think it's more
Anime fans: A little bit of column A, a little bit of column B. That tends to happen.
Me, a Star Wars fan: There's problems with this dialogue?
Why am I not surprised this is from Japan?
Wish I'd known about this movie when I was a kid, I would have loved it..
Merry Christmas Allision and Phelan! Thanks for sharing this bizarre Christmas movie with us.
This is like some insane mashup of Dragonworld and Mac and Me and it still manages to be weirder in some ways than both of those films.
Ooh what's Dragonworld
As someone who's seen this movie when they went thru their Clamp phase this. Yeah this is a weird one. Yet oddly normal for something based on a Clamp thing.
I feel like one could go through a CLAMP phase and never fully finish it, given there are projects they haven't really finished X/1999 afaik, even in the manga. Not sure what they're even working on atm...new Cardcaptor Sakura anime came out, maybe other stuff. And Xxxholic is getting a live action stage adaptation or possibly a movie, I forget which
@@ToHoldNothing Yeah hell I never even finished Tsubasa the thing that started my Clamp decent into madness because after awhile that Clamp weirdness stopped being fun and was more aggravating and kinda creepy in spots.
I need to see this! I'm also super curious about the manga-- I hope that has a translation or an English release!
Thank you for spotlighting this! REXUUUU!!!!!!
Nothing says Christmas quite like dinosaurs and KFC
Chi materialised these objects and cloaked the dino due to her psychic powers
I always mix bits of Star Kid and Guyver up in my brain since I watched both around the same time as a kid.
There was probably way less nightmarish body horror in Star Kid than I remember.
Merry Christmas Phelous and Lupa!
"Rex has waited 5,000 years for this day"
So dinosaurs only went extinct 5,000 years ago?
I wouldn't be surprised if this movie came from multiple ideas people had for a dinosaur story (natch), but someone decided to combine everything and just roll with it. Must've been that smuggled cocaine. At least the baby T. rex looks cute, even if it looks like a weird mix between Charmander and the live-action Mario movie version of Yoshi.
Anyways, Merry Christmas Allison and Phelous!
Happy Holidays Allison and Phelous!
Glad to see Yoshi from the Super Mario Brothers movie got more work.
I was sold on this film from the first clip.
oh this looks adorable already
this isn't the last time Clamp had a character named Chie since many years later they released Chobits whose main character is named Chii. who like Rex were both created by science.
Clamp does like Clamp do.
@@TommyDeonauthsArchives which is fine with me because they created my most favorite anime: Card Captor Sakura. which has my most favorite anime character of all time: Tomoyo Daidouji.
Did they do that manga about Gon from Tekken? Or am I grasping at straws there? Pretty sure that was a shounen, CLAMP does shoujo usually
@@ToHoldNothing I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought about Gon since he does kind of remind me of him as well as Yoshi from the live action Super Mario Bros movie. Clamp can sometimes make Mangas outside of their usual genre. the best examples I can think of are Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle & XXX Holic. it's also the first Clamp film I can think before the 2 CCS films, the mini Clover film, and the later mini films based on the two titles I've just mentioned.
@@EpicJasonX9000 Yeah, I think both of those were in the vein of confirming a weird shared universe that CLAMP has technically done in a way since Magic Knight Rayearth, though very few mangaka are popular enough solo, let alone as a group, to have a shared universe at all
The only other one I can think of is Hiro Mashima, since Rave Master, Fairy Tail and Edens Zero all seem to exist in a shared multiverse
I love Phelan's Christmas sweater. 😆🤘
Playing “Largo” hatches dinosaur eggs? Okay. Sure.
I knew about the CLAMP manga but didnt know there was an adorably weird movie!
Oh man, I missed this one. I'll shelve it till next year. Great find!
Wooo! Merry Christmas 👋😎
Long haired girl without a mother figure adopts and raises a strange creature with black beady eyes and sharp teeth? And she also 'helps' him (albeit not very convincingly) dress as a human and passes him off as her brother?
These two were like - Lilo & Stitch before Lilo & Stitch.
Oh my god I can't unsee it now. Rex isn't quite as badly behaved.
Authorities chase after girl including big chase, Girl has problems reconciling with family, Girl tries to make scary but cute monster behave and they become best friends
Kudos to that translator! I wonder if anyone would be willing to dub it.
We need the Big Green Guys to Dub it in their style.
i cant wait to watch this, i want merch of this movie
How in the world have I not heard of this. As a anime nerd and a lover of weird bad films of this era, I'm surprised I never heard of this. I'm absolutely checking this out.
You guys are super super cool annd Imma LONGtime fan of yous twos. Much Love!! I hafta catch up on some of your more recent videos. You guys are soooo keww and soooo funny. Vash Starwind loves ya. 😎💎💖🤗
Thanks!!
I’ve been saving this for Christmas Eve so I could watch it while I wrap candies 🍭 So good.. so good. 🙏🏽 Merry Christmas Alison and Phalan. You guys give me hearty laughter on a regular basis.
Muchas Gracias !!!!
Thank you! Merry Christmas!
ok the dinosaur animatronics and puppets are super cute though
Yes! Kentucky fried chicken is synonymous with Christmas in Japan
It was a bit more surreal watching this as it sounded like a character was named "Cheese Mother",
Bennett the Sage's recent review of Harmageddon has a lengthy into about Mr. Kadokawa here (who branched his father's publishing company out into movies and TV, becoming a fairly major anime studio eventually). He apparently felt Kurosawa was kind of a hack!
Everything I'm learning about Kadokawa shows a rich well of insanity
I wonder how this compares to The Christmas Dragon.
....Wait, they actually afforded an animatronic, so this wins.
The Thumbnail gave me serious Theodore Rex flashbacks
The best Christmas presents are the surprises . I even looked this movie up on wikipedia and instead found "My Girlfriend is a T.rex" (no, not Chuck Tingle, just Sanzo)
Cocaine really does explain this so much
I haven't seen a paleontologist suck so bad at his job since Ross Geller
Chie's mom: Uh huh. So where's the dinosaur?
MOTHER OF THE YEAR
Wait a minute....discovering a dinosaur egg that everyone wants, sympathetic female character raises baby dinosaur...so this film is ripping off Godzilla vs Mothra, and Toho ripped it right back with Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
Shinoda: I must go now. My planet needs me
Think this dinosaur knows Mac?
"You're gonna abandon me?! ARURURURURURURU!"
That is an adorable dinosaur puppet, not gonna lie
I do find it hilarious that the moment people find out about a living dinosaur, they make it a commercial mascot.
"I have no title: I'm Sakamoto" A bunch of government officials...and their buddy who had a matching outfit
Tauntaun had to do his Christmas adventure and find Handsome Fellow
Everyone in this movie: Huh. A 10 year old girl's got a little dinosaur friend. Well, you're gonna see that.
Okay, I laughed at the Blues Brothers looking antagonists all going to a restaurant for Christmas. I'm going to pretend this has nothing to do with Chie and Rex and they just wanted to have a nice dinner together.
Chie and Rex, dancing in the snow, bump into Ann Darrow and King Kong Ice skating
Science alert: most dinosaurs were warm blooded, and probably would shiver. If a bird is shivering, they are minutes away from hypothermia. So DEAD
This review is an amazing Christmas present-this movie is adorable and shameless and just plain insane, and this review is hilarious and letting people know about a forgotten film
Tauntaun: This movie's not weird! ARURURURRURURU!
Congrats on a true bad Christmas movie discovery! I thought I knew them all but I learned something new today.
2:07- I fondly remember seeing Star Kid after renting it from the video store back in the day, but that was a long time ago, and I'll take your word on it.
