TV can use more reality shows like this, where the main themes are optimism and camaraderie, that still has competition, but overall the themes aren't just backstabs and betrayals.
That's always why American Ninja Warrior, no backstabbing in that show at all. Just straight competition.
That's why I like Forged in Fire. It's a bunch of people with the unusual hobby of making weapons usually in their houses and they compete to see who makes the best knives and swords. They help each other a lot. Any competition show that's based on something unusual, like there's a glass blowing one that's the same way. A lot of art based competitions, but the more uncommon ones especially.
Idk, I don’t even watch reality shows anymore but I was just thinking this show looks kinda dull and tame. I’m not talking bad santa behavior but if they’re competing for money, don’t the claws have to come out a little bit? Claus claws?
"Great Flower Fight" and similar shows seem to have that vibe. Yes they clearly picked "types" to be in the competition; they need characters after all. But they're all nice to each other and the stuff they make is really really cool.
Face Off, which was a movie make-up/creature effects show, after season 1 was very good for that. You still had moments of overblown drama here and there, but mostly it was about the craft, and it often happened that everyone in the workshop would stop what they were doing to help one contestant who was having trouble (prying open a stuck mold, for example).
"I think I've had enough cookies to last me a lunchtime." Ok, that line is staying with me. 😂
Replace "cookies" with "burgers" and you have a classic Mitch Von Malibu quote.
I made Santa Karl's Santa tricorn! He's been a good friend of mine for over a decade and is an amazing dude. See him every season at the Half Price Books flagship store here in Dallas!
Aw that’s great to hear! Thanks for sharing!
@@AllisonPregler Update: I sent him this video and not only did like it but he also tagged several of the other Santas in a Facebook post sharing it. To your delight or potential horror several of the Santas have now definitely seen this video.
The moral of this story is that santa can be anyone. Therefor Allison is santa
Yay ❤
Allisanta
I can't believe John rocked up all "I'm not here to make friends" to a SANTA COMPETITION
Delusion unlocked
Norwegian here!
So I had pretty recently moved to the US when this show first aired, and my husband is friends with Santa Karl so that's how we heard about it. Immediately the name of the show rang a bell so I did a bunch of research and I remember finding the name of one of the Norwegian comedians (Espen Eckbo) who created "Nissene på Låven" in the production credits.
My best guess is that he somehow got together with some US producers and upon learning about the Norwegian satire show they figured it could make a good authentic reality show in the US.
Thanks for the info about Espen Eckbo! Helps to solidify the connection between the two shows. So wonderfully weird.
Tommy the elf seems like he is having fun! Thanks for sharing this gem!
I normally can't stand reality tv, so it's good we have someone like Allison who can sift through it all and find the best of it for us. Merry Crimmus, one and all!
this is the kind of obscure content/in-depth media analysis i'm here for
I absolutely love we've finally found the reality show where everyone IS there to make friends
Man, this should come back. I keep seeing stuff like "People who met for the first time get married in five minutes" and "will these couples cheat on each other?!?" and it's kind of tiring. Although I think I did hear enough about "Santacratic Oath" for a lifetime :D.
The old santas sleeping is what got to me, my heart has melted
I’m not a big fan of any type of reality show, but this one is so sweet and wholesome that I could see myself enjoying this one.
It would have been hilarious if they had different Santas from around the world.
The Santa Olympics would have been on them for gimmick infringement then
That way lies Schwart Piet. It doesn't end well.
It's based on the Norwegian reality spoof Nissene På Låven (same meaning as the English one but is from a Norwegian Christmas song where a Santa is sitting on the barn bridge and eating porridge, and suddenly is surrounded by rats that try stealing his porridge).
Exactly the holiday retrospective about a thing I'd never heard of that I never realized I needed!
So many Santas. My inner child is crying tears of joy.
The fireman thing was probably the producers' idea. I was in a reality show pilot (that never went anywhere) and everything was plotted before hand.
I was going to say that. I would expect the bulk of this is planned out, reshot if needed, and just edited out if not wanted.
@@culwin That's pretty much how it was for me.
I didn't sign any non-disclosure (that I remember and since the show never became an actual series I don't think it matters) - basically Ty Pennington wanted to create his own Antiques Road Show but with an auction so they were looking for people with antiques they wanted to sell called The Great American Auction. I happen to have some very old books that are first editions but I also had a vintage wedding dress. They had me propose to Ty.
Then when it's finally aired they cut my 15 minutes down to 5 seconds.
Wasn't expecting not expecting so much wholesome energy from that ending! :)
I swear on the Santacratic Oath, I had a single man tear near the end there. Thanks for the hard work putting up your funny content!
New show to me! It sounds stupid but also hilarious and a lot of fun
A wholesome reality show? That really IS a Christmas miracle
The karakonzala/gremlins/yule goat movie challenge is inexplicable and I love it
A fun upbeat review of a fun upbeat show. Thank you so much, and have a wonderful holiday season! Merry Christmas, Allison!
I gotta say, a "reality" show that's actually good-natured and harmless fun sounds very refreshing. Seems like a show that's having fun _with_ the participants rather than at their expanse.
I like the outlier reality competitions that feature loyalty and kindness. There was once one called The Quest or something that was basically a LARP. Ahead of its time, really. But I remember a contestant literally wrote a tavern song praising the host. Raise your glass for Sir Ozric (or whomever) the Brave!
Wow thanks for this treat, Allison. I def needed this kind of holiday cheer.
I hope you, and yours have a wonderful season this year!
I want to pet all those sled dogs so bad
me too friend
@@AllisonPregler Happy New Year!
Why does Tommy the elfs makeup remind me so much of one of the times you did a video on some makeup palette 😂
loooooooooool
I've watched this twice now with different friends, and each time I burst into tears by the end. It's genuinely one of the sweetest accidents reality TV ever produced. Gonna make watching at least this video a new annual thing~
Aw thank you! Merry Christmas!
Santa Allison just delivered an early gift for us to enjoy!
You should totally watch "Nissene på låven". It's really funny, plus I'm curious to what a non scandinavian person would think of it.
Nissen på låven is also a popular christmas song, which is part of why it was called that. (Beyond all the folklore around nisser that is not about christmas and Santa.) 😊 It is bonkers to me that this has a «inspired by» american version.
Yay reality show lessons at Christmas!❤
Also these episodes proves why your voice is brilliant for podcasts 🤩
Amazing video! I love hearing about weird little reality shows like this!
Oh. Oh oh oh, that was a delight. I'm crying a little.
If I watched this, I'd want them all to win.
Happy Yule to Lupa and Phelous and all y’all out in the multiverse! 🎄
Have yourself a merry little Christmas!
Thank you!
What is this Krampus slander?! He's Kringle's right-hand, uh "man" that deals with the bad children! They are a team! He's not Santa's nemesis, he's his... uh, uh, hey, Real Black Santa I need you to finish this sentence
What a great review of a weirdly wonderful sounding show.
Another great video! Merry Christmas and happy new year Allison.
Merry Christmas, Allison and Phelan! Happy holidays to all!
And usually, Reality TV is just scripted nonsense... but Allison found us what might be a hidden gem!
If that isn't damning the genre with faint praise... I don't know what is...
I'm honestly shocked that the Surfin' Santa did not appear in Baywatch or Nights
11:45
When Santa Steve said the joke it sounded like "I hope you're nice when you kick me out," but when John Whatsis says the joke it sounds like an innuendo 😭 noooo
Wait Jon Gabrus was on this???? Talk about burying the lead! The man is an improv comedy legend. Maybe this wasn’t his best vehicle but still, man’s incredible.
Wow, that was adorable. I wish I'd known about this series when it was airing.
Tommy instantly won at me. And you have to give credit, this is truly all versions of Santa!
Why does this sound so wholesome I would have watched this show if I knew about.
That’s true christmas magic.
I love these kind of reality shows & a Christmas one with friendly competition definitely fits the bill. Others like the Masked Singer & Lego Masters are also my favs for that reason. Thanks for this wonderful post. Merry Christmas Allison!
Merry Christmas Allison!
Well it couldn't be Santas in the House because that's where Cory is.
All this Krampus slander makes me wish one of the Rangoons' humans coulda cameod with their Krampus muppet to defend his maligned reputation
Thank you for a very positive review!
I hope whoever frosts my cookie is gentle.
Would be great if someone turned up dressed like the Billy Bob Thornton Santa from *"Bad Santa,"* one of the best Christmas films.......ever. Merry Christmas, everyone!🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲
The sweetness of the contestants makes me think of my favorite reality show: "Who Wants To Be A Superhero?" Stan Lee searches for someone to become the next Marvel hero. It's very silly, pretty intense, but also just the sweetest!
I loved that show! Watched it every week.
I've never heard of this show, but you make it sound heartwarming and delightful!
We need a Baywatch in the Barn. Get Hasselhoff, pay him whatever is needed, make it happen.
I have the thrilling conclusion to the saga no one asked for. Remember last year I was looking for a cool Xmas decoration I saw in the back of one of your videos? It was located on Amazon. At last I am free
That aside I’ve literally never heard of this and as someone who loves boggling content that’s pretty uncommon. Thank you for this gift
Cool and all, but you should start your post with "its me Grif"
The Santa with sunglasses reminds me of Dale Gribble from King of the Hill
Allison found a genuine treasure for us. What a lovely christmas.
This seems like such a sweet show. Merry Christmas Allison!
At least they didn't use Black Pete as a nemesis, imagine the shit TruTv would've gotten into...
Jon Gabrus has talked about this show a bunch on his excellent podcast, "High and Mighty." I wasn't sure it had ever actually aired anywhere. It seems like a pretty insane show.
There was this web based reality show called strip search by penny arcade. It was a competition to be a web-comic artist, super dorky, and I loved it. Everyone on the show became good friends and it was genuinely so wholesome to watch. Contestants would cry when eliminated because they had become such good friends and didn't want to leave this new group. That show made me wish there were more kind reality shows, I loved it
Gnomes in the Barn looks like it was really Kids in the Hall! Thanks for this! Merry Christmas!
The Santa-Cratic Oath!
This seems so genuinely sweet and fun. I hope I can find it to watch some day.
This is so weirdly wholesome. Like that Angela Lansbury Mrs Clause movie.
You didn't tell me who won. Now I have to watch the whole thing.
Heck yeah you do
Merry Christmas Allison
Simply amazing. Thank you for this video.
No way, actual people from the show noticed this vid!
And they’re all so nice ahhhh
Wait, the Santa's considers being sneaky and hiding secrets un-Santa like? Isn't that the thing Santa is suposed to be super good at?
Merry Christmas and happy holidays, errybody!
my uncle was a Karakondzula, was good work when you could get it.
This sounds like a Santa equivalent of The Great British Bake Off which sounds dope.
The Santocratic Oath
The Santacratic oath section drove me fucking insane
EDIT: this is a fun and great video just to be clear
What a great find and amazing review. I loved this, thank you keep rocking
Merry Christmas
Thank you, Ms P, for all of your delightful work.
So, taking something that was a satirical parody of modern media and earnestly repurposing it as a real show, without a hint of irony, is a *bold move*. If I was doing something that was first a mocking parody, it would certainly give me pause, I would hope. "Should I be doing this thing?" ... It sort of reminds me of when people or institutions reprint or repost The Onion articles. If that wasn't usually so gross I would find the childlike innocence of the act charming. 😂
Edit: Not to say I don't LOVE this! Thank you for the Christmas cheer, Allison :)
I like the idea that Santa isn't a person but a title. I'd love to be Santa Kenny.
You can be!
Happy holidays!
Thank you!!!
We need more seasonal reality shows
Thank you for letting me know this show exists
There’s a farm joke here somewhere.
They made a reality show based on a parody of reality shows?
Guess Reality TV is literally beyond parody, now...
The Santa-cratic Oath
If they ever do a season 2, they have to get Mick Foley either as a host or as a competitor
This was fun. Merry Christmas all.
Oh I remember this show, it had that famous catchphrase you couldn't get away from: "You are The Weakest Santa. Goodbye!"
A wholesome reality show? Well, now I've seen everything!
The Santacratic Oath name is roughly as dumb as putting “aholic” after stuff, like shopaholic. The Hippocratic oath refers back to a specific person who originally came up with the idea and it’s called that because of Greek linguistic conventions. Just call it the Santa oath.
absolutely loved this video, you did such a great job
Thank you!
At 15:34 "look at Rudolph"... Yeah. A deer head mounted on a wall.. that's disturbing. How dId anyone approve that Christmas decoration?
This show looks utterly delightful, and this video was utterly delightful.
I'm so sad to hear the show only got one season!
You have an amazing voice. Honestly, I thought you were one of the voices from WatchMojo. You're that good
Hey thanks!
What? "Nissene på låven" is my favorite christmas calendar ever and you're telling me they made this thing....for real??🤣 as in not a parody?? I'm dying😂
Seriously where does she find these jems. You know the title tells you it's going to be a banger.
Ummmm….the Yule Goat is a Swedish tradition, not a Serbian one. Also, the whoe thing is that it’s NOT supposed to be set on fire (but people do anyway).
I can't believe they crossed the Christmas streams!
@@AllisonPregler Nah….they just made a new flavor of frosting.
Merry Christmas ^^ to all 🎅 Santans^^
