This is the first time I've seen something painted with the new Imperial Fists yellow, it's very impressive! Never thought I'd see a yellow paint cover like that. Cheers for showcasing it like that. Very nice terminators as well!
Contrast > wash > white > contrast is a very nice one that deserves to be explored with many colors (your note on the specific nature of this one notwithstanding). Well done.
this technique makes so much more sense to me than the commonly recommended base > zenithal > highlight > contrast, which frankly looks terrible outside of youtube.
Imperial Fists were my first army back in 1989, yes I'm old, at the time my painting process involved yellow paint straight out of the pot all over, then a bit of silver on the guns, finished off with a goblin green base. Each model took about 1 minute. They weren't good...
Aaay! 89 my birth year 😄. Yeah that sounds about right for all of us pre internet childhood kids. I really wish they'd bring back Goblin Green just for nostalgia sake. Warboss Green is close but not quite the same 😔
This is a really cool method to paint imperial fists, thx. I started painting my first army according to this and by the 4th squad, I'm starting to get quite good results. What I tend to do is after the first wash-drybrush-yellow phase do another light drybrush and apply another layer of yellow, but really lightly, mostly avoiding the edges completely. This helped me get more consistent gradients. Worked on Dreadnought really well.
Oh wow this is great! I tried a test marine with just Imperial Fist and it just looked too flat, so I abandoned it. I'll definitely revisit that test model now with this technique. Thank you!
Why didn't this color exist back when I still played 40K? I spent an entire summer experimenting with all sorts of ways to get the yellow that I liked, and this makes it so simple. I saw your video about using makeup brushes for drybrushing a few years ago, and it was a _game changer_ ! I get _so_ much better (and faster) results since I started doing that. Thank you!
Ms Bono, ABSOLUTELY enjoyed your tutorial. Direct, clear and simple. I am a much older hobbiest with no aspirations of becoming some pro painter, I just want to create goid looking models with the least amount of work and your style does that for me...thank you!🎉😊
@@DarcyBonoCreations i am aware that you are extremely talented and capable of surpassing this beginner technique... what was refreshing was that you took the time to consider us folks who are only starting or may be intimidated by higher leveled artist and you made it relatable. Thank you again.

I like the style of this :). I wonder how much different it would look if you started from a powdery pink instead of the ivory. Might be able to more depth in your yellow with the same amount of steps.
This was a greatly useful video! For anyone interested, I played around trying to find the formula if using Speed Paint instead of Citadel Contrast. Burnished Red seems the right substitute for Goregrunta brown. I think the ratio of Burnished Red to Speed Paint medium may be as high as 4:1, however.
I generally strongly dislike Contrast/Speed Paint videos, but the way you used them here was absolutely brilliant. I'm completely reassessing my approach to painting my IF army! Thanks!
honestly, step 1 of this guide is the most important to make proper yellow. Prime the miniature with white - and then even terrible citadel's averland sunset will be smooth and cool. love the guide, hopefully i'll get my hands on new leviathan set and contrast yellow. not for imperial fists, but for lamenters though
Here you can see a real artist, who has tested out most possible techniques... thx for the yellow guide. Will test it and maaaybeee add a few troops to my Crimson fists...
Great tip to do the black first before starting with the contrast. Big time saver/mistake saver step. Also, love seeing you use a wide flat brush for contrast paint on larger surfaces! For people who have done scale modelling (i.e. Airfix style stuff) this is a no brainer. Rounded brushes are great but not for base coats on flat areas.

This was the first video of yours I've watched. Really well filmed, excellent clear narration, not pretentious at all (unlike some). So I've subscribed :-)
Awesome vid! I always paint cheap and say all you need is your base color, dark wash and white. My black and white are my most used colors and I glaze the base back over the highlights to pull the saturation back. I love bringing my pallet down to the least amount of paint pots possible and using what I got. This proves you don't need 4 different shades of the same color to achieve great results!
Awesome tutorial. Was interested in painting yellow power armour, but even as a somewhat skilled painter I was concerned at the amount of effort. Painted a test model and found it easy AND awesome! Much thanks to you @DarcyBonoCreations !

This is a really great technique, worked well with Seraphim Sepia as an alternative (the recesses don't get quite as dark, but still okay). I had two issues, but I think these will improve with more practice: 1. Imperial Fist didn't spread quite like how it did for you. It didn't seem to flow quite as well, blotched/pooled a bit and felt a bit inconsistent. I didn't get a nice smooth finish. 2. I really didn't give the model anywhere near enough of a dusting to have strong highlights come through. I tried using Corax White if that matters? Thanks for the great tutorial!
Thanks for watching, glad you liked it! Yes, using Corax White does matter quite a bit. Corax is closer to a light grey and is not a pure white. That being said you're going to end up with more muted highlights.
Ok, that settles it; I'll be getting that yellow contrast paint this week. I've been painting IF on and off for over a decade and this must be the easiest way I've seen yet.
