This is one of the best tutorials I’ve seen for miniature painting. Super easy to follow along, clear camera work, and everything was edited great. You’ve got a new subscriber.
@DarcyBonoCreations I completely agree. You go my sub immediately! The methods, paint used, even the list for the gun were very nice. As a new painter, thank you for this video.
THANKYOU for talking about the mold lines! I haven't seen anyone else mention them and I thought I was just either going nuts or got super unlucky with a badly cast sprue. But yeah cleanup on these little dudes is taking me 35-40 minutes per mini, it's excrutiating. Looking forward to finishing that bit and actually getting some paint on them!
This is an amazing tutorial. The model looks gorgeous and the steps for the Vespid are very clearly explained and demonstrated. I would like to have seen the weapon demonstrated as well even though we did get a text description on how to do it. I find that watching the process unfold is immeasurably more helpful than a simple description. For me, the concepts in miniature painting are what's easy to understand, but the technique/application/execution is what's more difficult to learn. Watching someone actually do the application helps so much more as a novice painter.
Thank you! And yeah sorry, I got kinda burnt out on the video towards the end. However, I did find this one that GW put out a while ago if you haven't seen it already: ua-cam.com/video/gCX9F2lbMVQ/v-deo.htmlsi=sAXTWiYxSR4Q_XUK
@@DarcyBonoCreations No need to apologize. Your tutorial was wonderful overall. Thank you for the video recommendation. I appreciate it. Have a wonderful day.
This is nearly exactly the colour scheme I had in my head for the Vespid's I pre ordered the other day. Thank you for this tutorial its been a great help
I have not the money to buy a tabletop army nor the talent to paint properly, so it brings me vicarious joy to see how talented people execute their color schemes.
i was searching on google for this hornet color pattern for two days and then today when i stopped searching ... tadan!!! here it is ! great paint! i love how it feels ! i will surely paint them in a similar way!
I like the color concept because it emphasizes this aspect of the Wasps, which is exactly how I envision the Vespids. I think the sponge markings are particularly well done. I also like the fact that the weapon stands out in white, as it closes the bridge to the Tau Empire and thus assigns the Vespids to the appropriate faction. Thanks for this great tutorial, which allowed me to paint my Vespids relatively quickly. Yours look really impressive and I hope I can come close.
Saving this one for when my box comes in. Gonna have to pick up some Lahmian Medium; never knew to put it directly on the model and then the paint, just assumed you mixed it. Thanks!
This is such a great tutorial and the end result looks fantastic. I’m torn between doing a yellow and black “hornet” sort of scheme or doing them in pink/magenta.
I heard you speaking on Squad Games podcast, they had obvious respect for your skills and videos, and now I clearly see why. I wasn't going to paint mine these colours but wow I'm considering it now. More importantly, I think I could choose two sets of complementing Constrast paints and achieve the same thing with your guidance. Very nice.
I may have to try this technique for the wings! Though for the main body I'm using an old air paint (Eidolon Purple Clear). It was a gift so I figured why not use it for my vespids?
Amazing tutorial! I've just finished building my Vespid Warriors (after much frustration because of the mould lines 😂) and was starting to think about what colour to paint them. Yours look beautiful so I might try to replicate the scheme using speedpaints.
Very nice tutorial! I think I heard somewhere the backpack thing was a device for controlling the Vespid? A tank of some chemical that injects into them to keep them compliant or something. Think Jem'Hadar from DS9 I guess.
Excellent work, nice tip/reminder on using a bit of sponge for the blotches of black, that technique would work well for camo patterns as well. Your Stingwings look really good!
I love these models… but disappointing about the mould lines. Your scheme is great and really love the detail on how you used Lamia medium (especially comparing with water and contrast medium) 👍
I was torn between going with a blue theme or a yellow theme but I think I like the look of this more and I already have a pylar glacier team for my snake ladies. Gonna see how this turns out with nazdreg yellow since that’s my preferred yellow paint. Wonder if it will look good over runefang steel for a metallic carapace.
Cool! And Nazdreg Yellow over metallic results in an intense yellow gold appearance...so they may end up looking a bit more synthetic, but that could be cool
Looks great and will definitely use the video for my Vespids. Only pondering if I should do some edge highlighting/drybrushing on the yellow, not sure if it'll add more or not. Any suggestions on what type of yellow to use for the drybrushing?
Thanks! I use Dorn Yellow, and mix in a little of the Iyanden Contrast Paint to adjust how bright or dark you would like it (out of the pot Dorn Yellow is very bright). Army Painter Fanatics also have a really nice range of light yellows as well. Their Space Dust color is a good one for highlighting the yellow on the video as well.
This is super cool, very excited to try these techniques but with some different colours. Would the Lahmian medium blend technique work okay with non-contrast paints?
Thanks! Yep, you certainly can, however, it's not going to have quite the same effect due to the higher pigmentation in acrylic paints. In order to make it work more similarly to the video, you'll have to mix in Lahmian Medium into your paint to thin it and then apply it to the wet surface of the miniature. There's at example of it in the following video at the 8:05 mark - ua-cam.com/video/altHjuzV7_s/v-deo.htmlsi=lQ487qstgC7Am5ri You may want to search "wet on wet blending" for more/better examples 😅.
@@DarcyBonoCreations Thanks. THat lahmia medium feathering technique has been a real help. I kept getting blotchy stains when I tried feathering before.
That's so cool! Amazing techniques, I really liked the gradient effect it reminds me of watercolor painting. Would you advice against doing a zenithal priming if I'd use this tutorial?
Thank you! You can, but I don't find it necessary in this case. If you do still want to zenithal, I'd definitely do it over warm undershading otherwise your yellows are going to be very desaturated with muted greenish shadows. So base coat a red brown or even a dark pink and zenithal up to white.
Really like this a lot. I was going to paint them like wasps as well. love pro acryl paints. I don't know if some of the paints you are using really exist in that range but maybe I can use more medium to make them contrast like? Either way, very helpful. thank you
With metallic under shading. For example the following pic (instagram.com/p/C3YXhL1OX2e/?igsh=MWhxZThhbHM2eWxpMQ==) was done by heavily dry brushing a light gold over black and then applying a glaze of warpstone lightning and recess shades of Kroxigor scales. There's a video example of Contrast Paints over metal here: ua-cam.com/video/Xq5TFp8WShA/v-deo.htmlsi=nIh7s6ZJ43wdqUpy
darcy you’re the best hobby youtuber in my opinion. incredible stuff. which contrast paint would you recommend to aim for a more orange tone akin to the boxart?
Well thank you very much :) Just theorizing, I would do Iyanden Yellow Contrast (slightly more thinly than in the video) then once it's dry follow it with a thin layer of Gryph-Hound Orange. Gryph Hound Orange over Wraithbone isn't bad either, but doesn't have quite the saturation.
@@DarcyBonoCreations cool, ty i also left a comment/message on Instagram as i figured it might be better asking there as it required a visual reference as well
This is amazing! Contrast paint has never looked so good.
