What are optical brighteners?
To make paper bright, manufacturers use chemical compounds called optical brighteners and add them either to the paper base or the coating on the paper. These chemical compounds reflect a bluer light when exposed to ultraviolet light. If no UV is present, they don’t brighten. If you use a UV coated glass or plexiglas you are blocking the UV light from reaching the optical brighteners so the white in your image looks cream. Also OBAs degrade over time when exposed to UV light so papers that contain them are considered by many to be less archival than those that don’t.
