    ✵✵✵✵✵Would you go to MARS?
    (Astronomy/ Space Exploration)
Ray Bradbury inspired us to dream of the Red Planet and beyond. We dedicate this video to him. Live Forever! amzn.to/2KNgKJx
Join us on a Mission to Mars! We’re going to investigate the Red Planet. Inspired by SpaceX, NASA, ESA, and other space explorers? Us too! We can’t wait. We’re going to do our own space exploration in this video.
Learn all about the fourth planet from the Sun in our Solar System. Why is it red? Is it very different from the Earth? What has NASA discovered on Mars lately with its rovers and explorers? How will astronauts make a home on Mars?

Great video! I love how a sense of pretend and make-believe is woven into it. This reliance on imagination is a very important part of inspiring a sense of wonder. How many scientists can say they were inspired by fantastic tales and daydreams? Most I'd wager. How many were inspired by the Kardashians or the home shopping network, or infomercials? None. I hope.

    • @Socratica
      @Socratica  7 років тому +3

I know we certainly grew up looking up to scientists and allowed to dream of new achievements by reading science fiction. Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov...we owe so much to them. I think you're right - I bet almost every scientist can say this was part of what shaped their interests.

Great video. She looks she had fun making this, and I can see why. I was surprised to see the comment that it was "professional-looking" because I'd assumed that it was.
Earth's air used to be mostly CO₂ too, so all we should need to do is get some plants or cyanobacteria going. Is there enough water near the ice caps for that? Plants should thrive in that atmosphere, although they might need a bit more nitrogen. Are the weighted suits enough to prevent muscle atrophy and loss of bone density? Are there any kind of feasible terraforming procedures would it take to increase the surface pressure?
Why the crustal dichotomy? Is the thicker crust related to the smaller size and density not creating more heat and pressure in the core or the smaller gravitational gradient not pulling all that external iron in from the surface? Does the magnetite in the atmosphere also shield from UV radiation along with blue light?
..ready for her to do Mars video 2 anytime;)
I also appreciate the effort to pronounce people's names correctly, from Évariste Galois to Schiaparelli.

This was a good idea and I would have thought it was cool when I was younger. I think you should take it farther though with detail. For instance instead of "We are on our way to Mars" talk about delta v, gravitational assists and how we actually figure out where to point the rocket. Then talk about the challenges of getting enough fuel in orbit to fuel the ship to mars etc. IE I think this would be even better if you kind of simulated in detail all of the challenges that we will face on our way to Mars.

2:13 Why would we need a lot more fuel? Once we've got our course set wouldn't we just travel on inertial flight? Even if it's a longer trip it's still the same concept: point where we want to go, give thrust until we get to speed, shut off boosters and glide until we reach our destination. The only time we'd need more fuel is if we needed to make course corrections

Seems to me that the logistical requirements will cause a lot of problems for a trip. Not only do you need to think like a prepper as to what you're going to need, how long it will last and how you're going to get resupplied but you're going to have to be very picky as to who you bring, what everyone will do to stay busy and what skills will your team need. The social planning will have to be as detailed as the mission planning. What do you think?

The Biosphere 2 experiment ended in disaster for a lot reasons, one being that they couldn’t get along and they broke up into two groups. It ended early and wasn’t considered a success. The challenges in colonizing Mars are far greater!

You don't really have to stop the atmosphere for leaking into space. It takes a such a long time compared to human life. If we somehow manage to import or generate all the nitrogen and oxygen that we need into Mars, we can keep doing that.

But wouldn't space colonies make more sense? That way we could live at normal gravity and have more control over our environment. We also wouldn't have to worry about landing on Mars because of the thinner atmosphere. Less friction to slow falling objects. Also, on Mars, we'd be at the bottom of a gravity well, making it harder to leave. I'm SURE I'm not the only one who sees this. Is there something I'm missing?
*edit* Even if we terraformed the planet, it wouldn't solve either the gravity issue or the atmosphere issue. The only way that I know of to do that would be to somehow inject the core with a dense, viscous fluid. That would be an absurdly HUGE undertaking, and we don't have anything close to the technology needed. Also, the amount of resources needed to do such a thing would make it infeasible. Seriously, why do you people keep talking about Mars!?

    • @jmseipp

If you watch many of the videos here on youtube that discuss the many very great hurdles that would have to be overcome it does seem like an impossibility. I wish Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos would spend their money on building massive new wind and solar plants here on Earth instead so that we can transition away from using fossil fuels much more quickly. Especially since it sure looks like we’re DOOMED if we don’t!
