Over half the time Venus is not the nearest planet to Earth; Mercury is. In fact, the scientists have crunched the numbers and found that on average, Mercury is the closest planet not only to Earth but to every other planet in the solar system as well.

It shouldn't matter that Mars is only closer than Mercury every 26 months. That's still its closest point to us, as that's how you're measuring Mercury. So Mars is actually second closest to earth.

    • @jgcalc
      @jgcalc Рік тому +7

True. Venus is closest..... at its closest. Mars is 2nd. On average Mercury is closer than either . So not even 2nd according to that. On average its closer than Mars or Venus. But at its closest.....it's 3rd.

They got their numbers wrong. The closest approaches for Mercury, Venus and Mars in respect to the Earth are 27 million miles, 25 million miles, and 34 million miles respectively. For some reason they used Mercury's average distance from the Earth instead of its closest approach distance. While there are times when Mars is closer to Earth then Mercury, so long as you use the same metrics for all three planets, then they are correct by accident.
During closest approach, Mercury is closer to Earth than Mars.
During maximum separation, Mercury is closer to Earth than Mars.
On average, Mercury is closer to Earth than Mars.
At times, however, Mars is closer to Earth than Mercury since each planet has its own orbit and are independent of each other.

Basically to travel to Mars we really need better engines to travel around space. Something like an ion engine or something like this that can be upscaled to a much larger ship and then you need a magnetosphere to surround your ship so you don’t die in trip if you’re hit by a mass coronal ejection from the sun comes your way.

One because it’s far away and it is in orbit. Planning for an interception considering gravity speed and the possibility of several course changes you would have to really do a lot of math and have the ability to provide fuel for acceleration deceleration and orbit then return. Yup just those few are quite profound!

0:50 Well done. You really need to check your numbers.
The closest approach for Earth and Venus is 25 million miles. You got this one correct. The average distance is 62 million miles.
The closest approach for Earth and Mercury is 27 million miles, not 48 million. 48 million miles is the average distance.
The closest approach between Earth and Mars is 34 million miles. The 55 million figure is for kilometers. The average distance is 140 million miles.
Perihelion has nothing to do with the distance from one planet to another. Perihelion is the point at which a body is closest to the sun and that distance is about 128 million miles. The term to describe the closest approach between two planets or other astronomical bodies is the unusually pragmatic "closest approach". I guess "perihelion" sounded more scientific or something.

Earth and the moon... in that distance, you can fit ALL THE PLANETS of the solar system side by side in that space!!
So multiplying that and receiving a number as to the distance between us and our neighbor!!!
    Absolutely insane!!
To achieve this, we would have to send multiple craft with the materials the crew would need for supplies and fuel to return. Land those there and have them waiting for them to give and do al the scientific studies and observations.
    Wow!!!!
What it would be like to stand on another planet and just SEE THE SUN!!!
1st time I saw the sun from Mars... I ended up writing a song.

@@DanielWatson-vv7cd BTW, I don't disagree with you in principle. I was just responding to your original post of why would we want to do it. It is part of the human experience to explore. There is another reason. Because we are systematically destroying the only planet we live on. Going to Mars for example, can help us potentially learn about the evolution of that planet to educate ourselves on our own (like what happened to the magnetic field and the atmosphere and water). We should be paying attention to the effects man has on his own environment in order to get smarter about how to preserve it. There are those in power now who don't want us to put Earth observing instruments in space to better understand our climate, how its changing, and the effect man is having on it. These people are being fed misinformation by egregious polluters of own own planet who don't seem to understand that all the money in the world now will not help their future progeny to survive in a world that will no longer support life.

It's hard to get there because we don't know how to leave earth, and probably can't

It's so hard to get there because we have not even been to the moon yet

Even if we sent you, flat earther, to the moon to see it first hand, you still wouldn't believe it because you live in your own little world, and that little world is not Earth.

Should have paid closer attention in school and taken more than finger painting and basket weaving, eyes shut, head-in-sand.

What a laughable title. I clicked in it to not bother watching the video but seriously. Any human being educated to grade 8 in the public school system, can figure out why it is we haven’t been back to the moon for shits and giggles. It’s far too costly, quite simply.

Sorry mate, this could have been a really interesting video, but you just go on and on and on... getting to Mercury would be easier than for you to get to the point. Five minutes in, and I'm outta here.

Cool video! Thank you! Have a blessed year 😊 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
