- Visiting the old murder site, the jail, the graves of Wallace and his accomplices, body dump sites and more. I love this movie, and up until a few months ago had no idea that anything so interesting happened around where I grew up!
Well done! I have lived in and around Coweta Co for 30 years. This is a very comprehensive overview of the locations. I read the books years ago, and had forgotten that Heard County was part of the story.
I have just recently published a new book on this case based on the investigation of my grandfather, Revenue Agent C. E. Miller. He was investigating Wallace and Turner for Moonshine over a year before the murder. He knew details that never made it into this movie. He knew all the principal players very well. I will be signing books and speaking to the Meriweather County historical society on April 8. My book, entitled "Moonshine Over Georgia" reveals details never before made public.
@@chrisskates1038 I am working my calendar. Sounds very interesting. Happy Easter to you.
Great tour! I've known of this case all of my life being from middle Georgia and have driven through on Hwy 41 and 29 where the murder occurred but time kept me from seeking out all the key localaties. Thanks again!
I'm from Ga I love that movie I just watched it again the other day Andy Griffith and Johnny cash are great in it
Fantastic job on this bit of unfortunate and interesting piece of criminal justice history . I recently watched the movie and this complimented it perfectly .
Herring Sivell Didn't want to testify on Wallace's behalf because if he did he would've gotten the Chair.
Thomas Strickland was one of Wallace's cousins.
I knew Sheriff Potts,he arrested me a few times.
Wallace actually used a shotgun when he hit Turner over the head.
The house that John Wallace lived in at the time of the killing burned several years after his death but there is a house on that road that he lived in before he was married. It was much smaller and it is still there and the nephew lives there. It doesn’t look like what you’d think it would. Although I’m sure that house you saw was part of the Strickland family, though I’m not sure whose it was. The Strickland Family home place was on that road as well, so maybe that house was part of it. It’s in the timeline as far as I can tell.
I wonder how many folks from the families involved would want to interview about their bloodline’s past? I’ve spoken with Bob Yarborough about it, who was very helpful and made for an awesome interviewee! However I wouldn’t want to knock to ask about some Dixie Mafia connections just to get a shotgun in my face 😂😅
Judge Samuel Boykin was from my home town, Carrollton Georgia.
Turner was going north not south to Coweta County.
Really enjoyed this! You done a great job & thanks for sharing!
I was in that jail in Greenville about 1966.
Wow! Under what circumstances?
@@johnposey1455 I pawned some stole skill saws that were stole out of a school in Greenville.Got 2 years in Alto.I was 16.Some of the same people I met there would be my drug trafficking partners later.
Good job. I have never been able to get anyone to confirm where exactly Mayhaylay’s original cabin was and that road is well guarded with cameras and stuff. How were you able to find out about the house where she died?
Both places I learned in local Georgia history Facebook groups, I believe I messaged a local church - and they messaged back explaining the original cabin was in the woods. I think it’s an ATV trail, there’s no No Trespassing signs as far as I saw! I always try to respect private property. And someone else commented on a discussion post that she died in a home near where Mayhayley and Lancaster roads intersect, with several chimneys on it - one that looked much more modern. I figured this one must be it!
By the way, I love all your videos as well and appreciate the feedback!!
I was in the 5th grade when this was aired on television. I'm going on I'll be 52 in 2 months.
6:07 Just about 1/2 mile north of the gas station, there's a street named Camp St. Maybe the tourist camp was along that street as well as along Hwy 29/41/Alt 27. Streets are usually named after some significant item of historical interest or landmark. That street has long since been redeveopled with new homes.
Well narrated
You did a great job!
I have this dvd
If you go down Wallace Road and past the lake, Wallace lived on the right side
down a dirt road.
I am pretty sure Sunset was across the street. Straight across from the first store you looked at
He headed north not south
Sheriff potts lived in Alan Jackson home town of Newman Georgia
Just like in the movie, some of these "facts" aren't right.
griffith played a convincing bad guy
Mayhaley Lancaster was robbed 23 times. She couldn't see that coming?😂😂😂
Or maybe she could see it, and didn’t want to intervene when bad men decided to cast their lots? 🤔 Really though, I think she was just a spiritual woman who played up her role as a creepy woman in the woods so that she could get enough attention to run as a progressive political candidate on the platform of building infrastructure in rural Georgia. Which is what she did! Sadly, nobody remembers her for her political career, but I do think she was ahead of her time - basically a hippie grandma lol
Turner was not a good man either he was a coward who went AWOL.
