Village of the Watermills by Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams
Transcribed by: Woz Choi
“Good Day” Akira responded smiling. The children picked up flowers and left them on stone at the edge of the river. Akira continued walking towards the village. He saw an old man working on his waterwheel, building it primitively.
“Good Day” Akira said. But no respond!
“Good Day!” Akira said with raising his voice.
“Good day” the old man responded.
“What is the name of this village?” Akira asked
“Does not have one”
“We just call it The Village”
“Some people call it Watermill Village.”
“Do all the villagers live here?” Akira asked
“No”
“The live in other places.”
“There is no electricity here!” Akira curiously asked
“Do not need it”
“People get too used to convenience. They think convenience is better.”
“They throw out what is truly good.”
“But what about lights” Akira said
“We have got candles and linseed oil.”
“But nights so dark!” Akira said
“Yes! That is what night is supposed to be.”
Why should night be as bright as day?”
“I would not like nights so bright you could not see the stars.”
“You have paddies” Akira responded “But no tractors to cultivate them? he continued.
“Do not need them” the old man responded while working on his waterwheel.
“We have git cows and horses.”
“What do you use for fuel?” Akira asked
“Firewood mostly.”
“We do not feel right chopping down trees but enough fall down by themselves.”
“We cut them up and use them as firewood.”
“And if you make charcoal from the wood just a few trees can give you as much heat as a whole forest.”
“Yes, and cow dung makes good fuel, too.”
“That is the natural way of life.”
“People today forgotten they are really just a part of nature. Yet, they destroy the nature on which our lives depend. They always think they can make something better. Especially scientists. They may be smart, but most do not understand the heart of nature. They only invent things that in the end make people unhappy. Yet, they are so proud of their inventions. What is worse, most people are, too. They view them as if they were miracles. They worship them. They do not know it, but they are losing nature. They do not see that they are going to perish. The most important things for human beings are clean air and clean water and trees and gras that prodice them. Everything is being dirtied. Polluted forever. Dirty air, dirty water, dirtying the heart of men.”
“On my was to here, I happened to see some children putting flowers on a stone beside the bridge.” Akira said “Why?” he continued.
“Oh, that!"
"Long ago a sick traveller died by the bridge. The villagers took pity and buried him right there. They placed a large stone on his tomb and put flowers on it. So, it became a custom to put flowers there. Not only the children. All the villagers put flowers there as they pass though most do not know why.”
“Is there a celebration today?” Akira asked after hearing sound of celebration through distance.
“No, funeral.”
“You find this strange?”
“A nice, happy funeral. It is good to work hard and live long and then be thanked.”
“We have no temple or priest here. So all the villagers carry the dead to teh cemetry on the hill. We do not like it when young adults or children die. It is tough celebrate such a loss. But fortunately the people of this village lead a natural way of life. So they pass on at a ripe old age. The woman we are buring today lived ninety-nine. You must excuse me but I am going to joing the procession.”
“To tell you the trust, she was my first love. But broke my heart and left me for another. ha ha ha ha ha.”
Akira kep on smiling by hearing his last message.
“By the way, how old are you?” Akira asked.
“Me?”
“One hundred pluss three. A good age to stop living. Some say life is hard. That is just talk. In fact, it’s good to be alive. It is exciting.”
Funeral continues celebrating

Here for STS but I feel great that I've got to discover this. Indeed, natural life is very beautiful and we only have to appreciate this little thing and little happiness around us in order to protect this natural world that needs us right now. We are living in a technological world wherein we forget the value of life, the people, and most especially the environment. We tend to neglect our duties. I hope, those who are watching this video, you must learn to appreciate little things because real happiness is not being comfortable with regets, but it's being at peace from what you see and expereince.
I'm one of the students with an sts subject and I'm so happy that the curriculum has included this on my course. Indeed an eye opener to us in the generation of technology, this is so underrated ._. ❤️
STS brought me here , thank you it is an eye opener for everyone.
Shout out to all students ng UCU na nandito dahil sa STS
Contains all the opposites I can imagine. Earth/water man/nature young/old life/death traveler/stasis knowledge/ignorance - and the bridge that brings together and divides. Amazing.
Man and nature are opposites?
been reading the comments and yeah same ahaha here for STS. anyway this film's worth reflecting, the old man has mentioned a very good point and hell yeah wanna visit that place someday. i suddenly feel sad living with all these advance technologies we have now, damn carries much pressure. wish i was born in a place like that or perhaps in a tribe ahahaha lol.
here to accomplish a task for my STS subject but felt so great watching this💖 very nice film🥺💖
nandito ako dahil sa STS kayo ba?😅
The kind of life of the village that was presented in the show was a conservative, productive and peaceful life. The village was really making use of their natural environment for the processes that serves a purpose for their typical way of living.
I can see that the old man is conservative about nature or his environment because he wants to live the natural way of life, and that he doesn’t use electricity to conserve it and to live how man are used to, mentioning the purpose of night is to provide darkness and don’t need to be overpowered by brightness. He stated that, man have forgotten its stewardship responsibility because humans are not contented on what they already possess and craves for more for our own convenience, not minding it's effect on the environment where we depends.Relatively scientists that invents things for people for people’s convenience and happiness but later on making them unhappy.
The village of the watermills set a point that separates and distinguish the huge difference on the influence of lifestyle to humans continuity of existence/ duration of their life on earth. There, the old man said that funeral on their village represents that people lived a long life and old aged death since they work hard to survive and be thanked. Barely young people died, which they mourned for such a loss. Comparably, the modern lifestyle does not ensure happiness to people because the advances in science and technology have helped us to exploit the environment for our benefit, but we have also introduced pollution and caused environmental damage. The impact of environmental problems on humans is significant, affecting all human activities, including health and socio-economic development. The nature of human are being dependent on their environment since they are part of nature, as being created by the supreme being. Humans need to interact with the environment to gain environmental resources that obtain our food, water, medicines, building materials, gases, minerals and many other things. People get used to convenience as the old man says in the video. Simplicity to be the most important, people nowadays throw away what is really valuable. see it, is of celebrating life and nature and it has a major criticism against science and technology as generative force of pollution and misery.
Here's my own reflection for your enlightenment. Hope this helps! Kudos college students like me, Fighting!!💪 kakayanin whahahha

This short video clip shows us how we should be grateful and appreciative on everything we have right now.
A lesson learned that even living in a simple life, environment life can still be meaningful and full of excitements.
Through our high-technology, living right now, made for us very convenient.
Thank you.❤
