American Bandstand 1966 - Spotlight Dance - My World Is Empty Without You, The Supremes

Steve Schreiner, Pat Reddy and company spotlight dance to the Supremes’ latest release. I like when Dick seems to get a little frustrated and says “just move, that’s all!” at the end. A small crack in the teen-whisperer’s usually unflappable facade. Lol.
“My World Is Empty Without You” just entered the Billboard Hot 100 today at #78 and will peak at #5 in 5 weeks - the 1st of 8 consecutive top 10 hits (4 of which were #1’s) for the Supremes. The final song of the 8 will be “In and Out of Love”, the song used for the late ’67 Bandstand dance contest - when Famous and Jenny won the Volkswagens in January 1968. Not a bad 2-year streak for “the girls”.
My world wouldn't be empty, but it would be a lot less full without you. ;) Thank you for watching!
Thank you for posting this.. I was 8 years old and an avid radio listener
I was 13 at this time. Wonderful music to grow with.
One of my favorite Supremes songs even if you can barely hear Mary and Florence in the studio version. (Some reports claim that it is not even Flo on the record.) I have a hard time not doing the Supremes' arm choreography when hearing this, but at this time Diana, Mary and Flo had not yet performed this live on TV so the teens had to make up their own moves for it.
This week we lost a prominent figure in the recorded music industry. Though not an entertainer or producer he made his mark in the business by sharing his interest in music charts to the world through his many books covering a century of (mainly) Billboard charts of all genres. I have some of his books and chart stats posted in this channel can be attributed to this man. RIP Joel Whitburn 1939-2022, may the charts be with you.
I still have my early 90’s, tattered, copy of “Top 40 Hits “. As a pop music “nerd”, (and long before the internet)I found it endlessly fascinating. RIP Joel Whitburn.
Hi ya Keith!!!
@@YCDTI I still have a few of those books too. I'm glad I'm not the only one.
@@YCDTI since it's music, I don't really consider it "nerdy" I think it's rather fun!
@@YCDTI I still have my copy too. This is proof that I am truly an Oldies Geek...Thanks for the new video clip. 😊 👍
Thank you beautiful remembers ¡¡
I was 7 when this aired but I remember this and The Supremes EXTREMELY WELL ‼️ AARON I HOPE YOU ARE DOING WELL AND THANKS FOR THE WEEKEND BOOST 🤠😎❤️‼️
I was 4 but my little sister was born on this year!!
I use to watch American bandstand in the 70s when I was a teenager every Saturday morning 🌞
I never missed bandstand or soul train !!! The 70s the best !!!
You just can't go wrong with the Supremes. Super fun video to watch. I'm always waiting for your next upload Aaron.
I thought it was - and confirmed - same airdate as the Batman promo and "She' Just My Style" was No. 1! I recognized a couple of the dancers in this clip - and their outfits/hairstyles! Both great clips!
Their world might have been empty but my world just got better because of this clip! Thank you, Aaron!!
Another great song, some interesting dance moves, thanks
Hey Aaron!!! You gotta love The Motown Sound! It really did define an era & was such a fresh, youthful sound that all ages loved & enjoyed till this day! The Supremes were everything! Groundbreaking, door opening, beautiful Black women who were icons in the field of entertainment. I really wish groups in general was still a thing, it's just all solo artists now, really.
Although the energy from the couples here was good & strong, they didn't quite nail it. Lol, but hey, fun was always the name of the game on AB, so they get a pass from me.
Also, it amazes me how many toothpaste products have come & gone & it makes me wonder why certain brands have stood the test of time & other are just a figment of our imaginations after awhile, hmmm...
Anyway, another great clip Aaron. These past few Saturdays have been kinda bland without my AB videos from you & Jeff. Hope all has been & is well with you buddy!!!
Hi Kevin! If you watch Steve (Polka Dot shirt and vest) and his partner, this particular style may remind you of Frank Vanderpuil. Steve and Frank were good friends and Frank first invited Steve to the show. I'm uncertain of what the dance they are doing is called. Maybe Don would know? I love this Supreme's song. Good beat and it's easy to dance to!!! 😄
@@thefirstMrsLankton Hey Jean!!! Thanks for that info, didn't know that. Now that you shared that, I can see the influence on Steve's dancing, but we know who is better, no comparison tho. Lol Great song by The Supremes, one of their best. Hope you're well, friend!
@@thruthealcove play Motown and this chick is movin' on the floor!!
I don't know if I can remember this I was I'm 70 years old but I think I've seen this before thank you it's great thank you for having it on again when I was a little kid I was under an ironing board and I saw this on TV
WB Aaron. Great to see Steve in the Spotlight Dance set on the Prospect Studio's stage sporting the dark brown floor covering with the square light color "spotlight" design. This was a real treat after so many weeks' YCDTi! absence.
Hi Don! You knew I'd love this one. Sweet little uptempo tune from The Supremes. I read on Steve's blog that Frank was his best friend. It was Frank who extended the first invitation for Steve to be on the show and I can see they have a similar dance style...don't you think? I had the first album this song was on, but for the life of me I cannot think of the title. The Supremes had so many great songs you could really move to. I need to do some streaming! Thank you Aaron so very much for the time you take to dig up these great video clips of our AB regulars and the music. I miss you and wish I could give you a big ol' hug. To all the Dads, Grampa's, and good men who filled in when a Dad wasn't around....thank you and Happy Father's Day!
@@thefirstMrsLankton Well said all the way around, Jean!
@@thefirstMrsLankton HEY jean thats too bad you lost it . I have a 45 and my cousin has a green 33 album where the three girls are dressed in white. I think from 65 or 66...
I Hear a Symphany
@@thefirstMrsLankton what's the name of Steve's blog? Did he also have any other AB stories to share?
Aaron thank you for another show.Diana always looked as great as she sang. I enjoyed the show. Oh yes if Jenny is out there , you also looked as good as you danced. Summers getting in the swing and hope everyone enjoys...
Great Supremes song! Some odd foot movements on Steve yet he was often the focus!
The Supremes were wonderful to listen to. I was watching AB in the 70's. I was born in 67 & love the music from these era's.
I think this would be a hard one to dance to. I have noticed some dancers in other difficult Spotlight songs keep to the edge of the light or slightly outside of it as if they didn't wish the light to highlight their dancing. I could be wrong and reading into it that way because I would probably be doing same Ha Ha. And Aaron I see you channeling Ed Sullivan with that "the girls' comment.
Do you have any more posts from the 1963 episodes? Thanks!
Thanks for uploading these amazing clips Aaron! I am so excited that it is finally summer and I hope all fathers and father figures have a Happy Father's Day!
Seems it wasn’t an easy single to dance to?! ❤️
Welcome back, Aron!
It’s great to be back Gary!
It was good to salute these ladies at the end of Black Music Month. They were ground breaking and survived the British Invasion, one of a few American groups which has. Thanks Aaron for a great clip!
Like so much Aron. Many thamks
Does anyone know the dance styles Steve (polka dot shirt) and Diane (hair up) were dancing? Or were just "doing their thing". I just love this particular "spotlight" video! And the Supremes were my favorite female group.
The girl with the shiny top and beehive hairstyle is absolutely stunning, and what great moves! Thank you for this -😀
I agree! I couldn't stop watching it, the "spotlight" makes it so different.
Add 1976 American bandstand episodes
Thank you for the memories👍
Love this song, but these dancers seem a bit awkward dancing to this...
Yes, what was going on with these dance moves? I wonder how Famous and June would have handled it.
I was 11 years old and danced often to the Supremes. I don't recall this being difficult to dance to at all.
@@thefirstMrsLankton yeah, I don't know why these kids couldn't keep the beat 🙂
I was just 6 at the time and knew teen dancers just from my aged 16 brother and his friends with their dates at our house parties. I’d have expected the kids here having done the Jerk or something similar dancing to this-but I must’ve watched too many beach-party movie reruns on TV over the years?! 😂 🤷♂️
Tempo is pretty quick in this song. Did the 'skate' come out after this?
Yes, the skate.came out in 1966 and there's a couple of Bandstand episodes from '67 with people also dancing to it
thanks ''
Do you have any more full episodes?
I do, but YT keeps blocking them. I’ll keep trying to post though.
Dick Clark was well known for his hair trigger temper behind the scenes. Your stage persona and real life persona can be quite different.
I’m convinced the music is never in line with the footage
i was 4 yrs old
How many shipped out to Nam , would have been perfect time , except for that dam war.
Looks like this was a bit difficult to dance to.
You have to cut your dance steps in half to keep up...in other words dance in half-time or on the 2 and not the 1.
I forgot highwater pants were cool at onetime
Probably why bell bottoms were invented, to completely contrast high water pants!
The girls should have worn white Go-Go boots.
great video..the tall one, Larry, had some crazy feet moves🙂
