American Bandstand 1968 - Makeup for men? - I Can Take Or Leave Your Loving, Herman's Hermits

It's the end of the road here for Herman's Hermits' phenomenal chart success. Their cover of “I Can Take Or Leave Your Loving” will be their last Top 40 single in the U.S. It peaks at #22 today on the Hot 100. (#1 in Canada)
The Bandstand Regulars I spotted today: Al Allegre (men will wear makeup "for the benefit of man"), Roberta Simon, Forrest Hutchins, and (that) Maureen Cohen answering the question. Dancing - Rick Bach (2:33), Robin Miller (2:30), Don Sanuskar (2:54 - he hadn’t sat down yet after just finishing the Spotlight Dance to “Love Is All Around”) Famous Hooks & Jenny Nichols (2:57), Patty Barden (3:03), and Sondra Gomez (4:07 and in this videos' thumbnail). Who'd I miss?
A peak behind the curtain - we found out today that a group of skilled writers don't work late into the night coming up with the "Question of the Day", lol. I wasn't around much in '68 or even 3 years later, but I don't think men's makeup ever was a "thing" back then? or ever?
If you're following along, this is the same episode where they danced to "Love Is Blue" as the #1 song, "Love Is All Around" as the Spotlight dance, and “Tomorrow” by Strawberry Alarm Clock - all posted here previously.
Thank you, as always, to my video partner @jthyme (Gary) for supplying this episode and thank YOU for spending a few minutes in 1968 with me.
    More to come!

How fascinating! One year later, David Bowie would release "Space Oddity," and the whole glam rock experience would begin. Men would be wearing makeup much more than evening out skin tone. 🙂

Hi Don. More questions if you don’t mind. This time not about dancing on AB but watching. In the time before VCRs I am guessing the dancers had at most one shot to watch each episode. Would you watch at home with family or did dancers ever get together to watch? When the taping is happening the dancers could tell in many cases the camera was on them at a particular time. I am imagining myself in that situation at home watching with family and telling them - get ready, I am coming up! Was it like that or did it become matter of fact? Were you ever surprised while watching to discover that the camera caught you in a moment you were not aware…and it turned out a good moment or one you were not pleased with? With taping several episodes on Saturday did that mean you did not get to see that days broadcast? Finally, seeing Sondra Gomez here and on the reunion videos on ABdancers channel made we hope/wonder if she is still with us and watches these. Her personality really shines on those reunion videos and she seems such a fun person.

@@bradsense7431 bradsense you nailed just about everything. There weren’t any episodes that taped and aired the same day. Doing four episodes in a day/weekend the soonest we’d see the first taping on tv was a week out from taping the episodes. And, yep, there were the viewing parties too just as you imagined. There were a few times that we went to the mall - when department stores had TV sections. We’d turn all the tv’s to Bandstand to draw attention. Always got busted but it was fun while it lasted. LOL

A few months back I returned to my home town in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley, after two decades down in New Orleans. My parents insisted I stay with them while I look for a place to live and decide whether I want to return to work or to retire. They were avid dancers - giving disco and ballroom dancing lessons for a few years - and have enjoyed watching some of the old YCDTI clips cast to their new Jumbotron-sized TV. I unfortunately did not inherit a shred of their dancing skills. :(
I grew up knowing my High School hosted our local version of Bandstand - courtesy of legendary local deejay Gene Kaye - in the 50s and 60s. Kaye and Dick Clark had a close relationship and Clark was responsible for getting big-name acts to appear on our little local show. Many of the acts who appeared on "Dick Clark's Saturday Night" would immediately depart after taping and drive up to Bethlehem to perform right there in my old High School's gymnasium.
But what tickled me was when Dad recalled that Dick Clark, while he was a popular disc jockey in Philadelphia, used to moonlight as a deejay at the Frolics Ballroom, a popular dance hall in Allentown, before he was tapped by WFIL to host Bandstand. It gave me a bit of pride discovering Clark's connection to our moribund rustbelt town, known usually for our two greatest contributions to America: Crayola... and everyone's favorite Easter treat: Peeps. Rumors abounded that Dick Clark had a soft spot for the Valley and kids from that region were given priority to appear on AB, but Dad scoffs such scuttlebutt.
Dad was invited to appear on Bandstand in his senior year of high school, 1957-1958. He was dating Mom at the time and wanted her as his dance partner, but my grandparents were horrified at the suggestion of their goody-two-shoes daughter shlepping down to big, scarey Philly with a boy they hardly knew. So dad took his cousin Patsy. Unfortunately, they had a fender-bender on the drive down and never made it to WFIL's studio. Dad was more concerned with graduation and prepping for the upcoming baseball season and forgot about Bandstand.
Not sure how goody-two-shoes Mom was, though. My parents hastily married in January, 1959, just days after their 19th birthdays, and my sister, Theresa, was born that June. Do the math. 64 years, 7 kids and 12 grandkids later, they're still like teenagers in love... except when Mom has enough of Dad's shenanigans and puts her foot up his ass...

@@bradsense7431 I'm glad you enjoyed the read. I love telling stories... especially those involving my family. To say my family members are "characterful" would be euphemistic. I'm the middle of 7 kids... the family nerd...and the "hunk" of the bunch. We've been compared to "Eight Is Enough" and "That 70s Show"... with some salacious filth thrown in ... and quite a lot of dancing... and drama lol.
And at the helm of our family ship are our parents, Dewey and Veronica, who worked through the difficult early years of their marriage - Dad working full time while getting a degree and Mom struggling to deal with his youthful philandering - through the good years, where Dad's career allowed a rather comfortable lifestyle for us (though our tightwad mother kept extravagances at bay) - through the unthinkable death of our youngest brother, Nick, at age 21... something we couldn't have coped with without our mother's firm tenacity and father's guidance and natural leadership.
I could write a book. But I digress...
I, for one at least, love your contributions here. Your Christmas story touched me deeply, humbled me, and gave me greater appreciation for the emotional and financial security my parents afforded me.
Your story reminded me of a particular Christmas from my teen years... but I'll save that for later.
I look forward to more from you.

@@yossarian6799 Thanks.I am the six of seven siblings so I can relate to large family adventures. Sorry about losing your brother Nick that must have been so difficult for all especially for your parents but as you describe how they got you all through it is a testament to them. As for that Christmas story I have been meaning to add to that as I am afraid I may be giving an inaccurate picture. While everything I wrote was absolutely truth our we were not some sort of Norman Rockwell image of a family. In fact we broke apart soon after. I did not want to leave a wrong impression so I will have to add to that soon. Take care.

@@bradsense7431 you mentioned in the Christmas story that your family later separated. My heart goes out. I can only imagine how difficult that must have been. Hopefully you have the same bond with your siblings that I enjoy. A few years after Nick's death, we began having our annual "Lock-In". We kick Mom and Dad out and commandeer our childhood home for an entire weekend. Significant others are not invited. Cell phones are turned off. We cook our meals (no Domino's or Door Dash), dine together, watch movies, dance to old 45s, play football in the back yard and share our innermost secrets.
It seems idyllic to some, but we have the same problems as any normal family, usually sibling rivalries and petty jealousies. Mom and Dad were great parents, but hardly perfect.
People from those small familes with the 2.3 kids ... just don't know what they're missing.
