    Hello from Sydney Australia! Thanks for taking the time and effort to make all of your tutorials, they are excellent. I am a newbie spinning (I only bought my first spinning wheel a week ago - an Ashford Traditional) and your tutorials have been invaluable. I appreciate how you thoroughly explain each step in the process and do not assume your viewers have prior knowledge. Keep up the great work. Blessings to you and your family! Monica

    Thank you for explaining all the particulars! I really enjoyed this series with alpca wool. I'm a beginniner spinner. I must say what I have spun so far is not pretty but I'm proud of it! ... I love to crochet so I think my first project might be slippers with what I have spun. I subscribed to your channel and am looking forward to more of your videos...now on to binge watch more of your videos! Cheers from Owen Sound, Ontario Canada

    First, I love watching your videos. Thank you for sharing. I’ve watched these alpaca spinning videos several times while working on my alpaca fiber. I just finished knitting my alpaca cardigan, which is very long and weighs probably between 2 to 3 pounds. I need to block it now and am nervous. The alpaca has about 20% or less of merino blend in it. I’m pleased how it turned and don’t want to ruin it now. It’s been a big learning challenge and I managed to survive many mistakes during my process. I’d like to wash it in my washing machine in cold water and spin it. If I wash by hand, it would take forever to dry, because of the weight and awkwardness. I could put the cardigan on my gate board and spray it and weight it down or do it on a counter. Last year I spun my Romney/Tunis wool and knitted a jacket similar to this alpaca and washed it, then blocked it. It came out great, but this feels different and I read alpaca is more delicate. What do you say?

    Oh my goodness; I've learned so much! Two Ply! Thwacking! So *that's* how you get beautiful medium weight alpaca! I kept thinking, with some wool I did, that two ply would be nicer; but, I gave it too many twists and it was very active. I was so unhappy... because, I didn't know exactly why it was doing that; again, as I mentioned before... I didn't quite know what I was doing with my scotch tensioner. But, watched those videos, got that! You didn't say "Z" twist; but, I got that! At least when I did the 2 ply I did know to use the "Z" twist. :-) A 2nd wash; then thwacking it. I can't wait! I caught a glimpse of the finished skeins in the beginning.. I think maybe even in an earlier video. I remember because I thought how beautiful it looked; and I didn't quite realize it was the Alpaca. So, it was the same color; and I kept waiting to see how you were going to make it look so nice! (An observation about spinning the 1ply fingerlings, I noticed when you were *not* spinning and let the yarn get close to the orifice it would twist over itself. I kept thinking, this is too tight; but, then I think, if I'm understanding correctly, what I saw was some of the twist that would drift into the draft. This makes sense as I watched closer when you were going fast. So, it's possible and even probable that while spinning, one can get the count up to a bit less than double what you want to spin in twists per inch; then you let that pent up energy flow back into the drafted yarn; this is the action that lets you have a finer control over the number of twists per inch. As you spin faster, you can draft back further, which you did. If you're new, and spinning slower, you can do it like an inch worm style, like when clouding. I'm sure that after a while, one can get a good idea by looking at the yarn when it has about 10 twists per inch. And, as usual, I'm getting TLDR (sigh, I get that a lot!) So, time to stop talking, and get doing. But, :-( I'm still waiting on parts for the spinner! :-/

    Hi, I know this video is old. On your first video, I believe you had roughly 3 pounds of fiber, but on this video when you weighed it the end, it was roughly 1.5 lbs/825 yards. Was this just the half that you sent back to her? Or did the 3 pounds end up only making this much? I have 10 alpacas, and I am going to shave/process them, just trying to figure out roughly how much one blanket produced. Thanks, LOVE your videos!

    Thank you so much for the work you put into teaching us how to spin and process fiber. I am just starting my journey of spinning and this has been so helpful and creating excitement for my journey. I noticed the first video in this series you weighted the raw fiber at a total of 3.7 pounds and finished yarn at 1.5 pounds. Is this just the customers portion (half the yarn from the original 3.7 pounds) it seems like alot of weight was lost during processing. or am I miss understanding something?

    • @JillianEve

      I just finished watching and had the same question. To lose nearly half the weight after washing and processing, especially when you said that you shouldn't lose as much alpaca weight b/c of the lack of lanolin. I feel much better now that I see your answer!!! (Did I mention that I bought my first alpaca fleece yesterday and it weighs about 4.2 lbs :-)

    I didn’t think “ that “ you could was “ wool “ in “ hot “ “ I “ thought “ that it can “ shrink “

    • @JillianEve
      @JillianEve  4 роки тому +2

      Yes, it can shrink (or felt) which is why I don't agitate or scrub it. If it just sits in the hot water, it will be fine. However if it sloshes around in the water, especially with added soap, it will felt and shrink. It is a very careful process!

    • @JillianEve
      @JillianEve  2 роки тому

      It takes time especially as you are new and learning. Thinner yarn takes longer than thicker yarn and some spinning wheels spin faster than others. A lot of it depends. If you want to try it out without a huge investment to start with you can always try a spindle and see if you enjoy it. 🧶🐑✨

      @JillianEve  3 роки тому +1

      The WPI helps me know what my yarn might be good for if I want to put it into a project. For example, lace yarns tend to be 30 or more wraps per inch while worsted yarns tend to be between 9-12 wraps per inch. Very well done and informative "But." This series of video really doesn't have much to do with "Alpaca." Yes Alpaca is used but the instruction is really just about processing raw fiber all the way to finished yarn. That is great :) Given it's title it is misleading as to the extent it discusses Alpaca. Alpaca is a fiber with some unique characteristics that really are not covered in this series. This viewer was specifically looking for that information (as the title indicates) and while appreciating the overview of "blanket to yarn" process, was disappointed. A better title would be something like "How to Spin Yarn from a raw fleece." The title used has characteristics of "click bait." That said, for the beginner or more advanced spinner, this series is an excellent overview. Also keep in mind that there are many views on how this process should be done and one should compare ie the type of washing machine to use and if one should use one at all. But thanks Jillian for the series and your perspective on the methods to use.
