  • In this video I show you the method I have developed over time to wash my handspun skeins after I finish plying. I hope you find it helpful, maybe get an idea or inspiration for your process.
Once the skeins are dry, I load them into my website store, here is the link to my yarn section of the store:

Your drying rack is a hanger for slacks, just slide the pairs one above the other. Excellent reuse! I really am loving your podcast, thank you for keeping me company at my desk.

Aha! Well that makes sense, lol - last time I wore "slacks" was about 9 months ago. Thank you for the comment, I am so glad you are enjoying the vlog!

I'm laughing about the yarn police 😁 I'm so, so excited to find your podcast, thanks to Lisa at Soulful Spinning. I, too, have a podcast from my farm, and I crave learning about other shepherds and what they do - I think we need more of this type of content! Looking forward to catching up on past episodes!

I was wondering how you wash your skeins! thanks so much for sharing! Also, do you count yards before or after washing? You may have said in a previous video, I don't remember.

I count after washing. I used to be concerned that the yardage was short due to the crimp, but feedback from my knitter customers is that my yardage is very close to what they need when they adapt my handspun to patterns. Prolly due to when winding and knitting, you are stretching the yarn a little.

Some people leave it on the knitty knotty when they wash it. Does it matter?

I wash it off the niddy noddy because I prefer to not stretch the yarn when it is wet. I feel like once the maker uses the yarn to make something, there is a risk it will change shape after she washes her finished item, as the yarn will go back to its natural state. This is also why I don't weight my skeins when I hang them to dry. I hope this makes sense!
