I take an empty toilet paper roll folded and when I pull my yarn off the ball winder, I slide it on to the old roll. The carboard keeps the ball from tangling up in my hand. It allows me to ply a larger ball.

Hi Rayne, hope you're OK. Thankyou so so much for this video on plying on a Drop Spindle. This has to be the Best Video that I've seen on Plying. I've only ever spun singles and been to afraid of plying them together. Now feel able to ply them together after watching this video.
    Thanks again.
    Happy Spinning.
    Take care and stay safe.
    Love Jen xx 💖😘

Thank u so much 4 taking the time 2 show us this technique..I've been wondering 4 a good while if I could do this. Its actually 1 of the main reasons I looked 4 & bought a drop spindle(this & 2 make plarn yarn that is nice & twisted or maybe I can ply them too...I was wanting 2 ask tho, does any1 know if I can do this with like 2 skeins of store bought #4/worsted weight,100% acrylic or some acrylic blend yarns & also what about 2 sks.of #4 100%cotton yarn,or that $ tree 100% polyester chenille that's thin as #4or barely #5 guage yarns???

4got 2 mention why I wanna do this w/2 skeins of w.w.acrylic store bought..I am knew 2 yarn crafts & just recently in last 2 wks.have learned basic crochet stitches, but b4 that have mostly been loom knitting for a few months. The 1st loom set I got(which has the 4 main looms I've ever used, although I have a martha stewart build a loom set 2),are the kinds w/like large/xl guage spacing btwn.pegs,& pretty much require u use bulky#5 or super bulky#6 yarn..Almost all the yt tutorial videos 4 loom knitting (& patterns u can find 4 free)show or requireIf using these looms & hardly any are for reg.or finer yarns..If u only have w.w.#4 around, then they usually suggest u hold at least 2 or 3 strands together in place of the chunky yarns,& that's what I have most of on hand. Can't always afford 2 go out & get some of the 5&6,when I already got a bunch of #4 on sale b4 knowing what I was doing..It's hard 4 me to hold the strands 2gether & not snag & pull off the wrong strand sometimes,so I want 2 ply the 2 together & am sure this will help...

Just made my first yarn plying with the drop spindle. Only small quantities, I do not need much yarn as I am more felter, but was pleased with the results. I simply wound my yarn on a pill bottle an I was able to ply. Thank you! I I can see making more at yarn!

I think i should rephrase my question from old comment I made..Am still curious almost a yr.later & trying to figure out if it's possible 2 use this concept on 2 skeins of store bought #4 worsted weight 100% cotton yarn. Idk if the strands of yarn from ea.skein are already plied by machine when the yarn was made,or if that makes a difference or not(Id be changing a couple of things 2 better fit the situation tho,obviously..Like I'd put ea.ball/skein where it's easy 2 unwind & in their own seperate bowls beside me on the floor or up higher on a table. Also, would try to do the spinning after I invisble or Russian joiin the 2 ends 2gether & then see if I can make a slip knot or find a way to secure them on2 my spinner hook. Also after all that, I'd then try to start the twist by hand like u showed & attempt 2 keep the v shape & tension best I can while pulling up & using the slack of the continuous feed from skeins/bowls)...If it is possible 2 do w/the cotton yarn,,then what do u think about if I tried this w/acrylic yarn w.w.#4 (that I can def.say already looks plied) as well?? Hope this isnt too much of a bother & that I will hear some kind of feedback. Thanks so much 4 ur time & the great video..

I think it is possible. It would take a long time to untwist the already plied yarn, but if you have the time I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. I have seen others have to have too much or too little twist in their handspun skeins and have to re ply it. So I would think it would work the same way.
I haven't really worked with cotton that much so I am unsure of it's properties on setting the twist. But if it has alot of "memory" to the yarn after it is un-plyed then you could try giving it a soak and then dry with a light weight to straighten it out some and then try plying it. I hope these tips help. Sorry if I don't reply or it takes a long time. Cheers
