How to Spin Yarn from Alpaca - Balanced Plying

- Let's learn how to spin yarn from alpaca! In this video I explain balanced plying, while I make this lovely two ply alpaca yarn. I have several bobbins of alpaca fiber that was hand spun into singles. I'll also include show how I troubleshoot any twist issues to achieve a perfectly balanced, fluffy yarn.
This is the fourth video in my How to Spin Alpaca series. I am taking an alpaca blanket from raw alpaca fiber all the way to finished hand spun yarn. Check out the other videos in the series below. Girl....you made my day (or months). I'm Dutch, just started to get into this fleece-to-wool-thing (still looking for a nice spinning wheel), twisting 2 threads together in my language is called "twijnen". I heard people saying they they were "twijnen" from 1 thread. And I was like....wtf...HOW? I didn't know the English word for it and I let it go (for multiple things I'd rather look at English tutorials, but I didn't know the word for "twijnen" in English).
But this is how... Duh...so simple, once you know it...I was looking for it for months, just discovered your youtube and watched it for relaxing matters and all of the sudden: BOOM. there you go. Cool. :D thank you!
I'd be interested to know where you get raw fleece from. I live in Noord-Holland and I have no idea where to look.

This was actually helpful. I think. I'm trying to use all my alpaca and sheep wool I have stashed to make yarn that will work on my sweater knitting machine. Now that I have learned a little bit more, I understand that I'm spinning too tight. This was something I just dealt with when hand knitting. Wasn't that big of a deal. But with the knitting machine, it was falling off or snagging really bad and I have finally figured out that I had little random loops getting bigger and making the needle "misfire", if you will. So then I went back a few steps and worked on that issue. So I'm in the process of (,SO flipping slow!) spinning super thin alpaca and then I will ply it. It's hard to find the happy place between it taking up on the bobbin too fast. Or making twisties. Because alpaca is so cloudlike in comparison to sheep wool that is more velcro-like.
I'm working on a sweater for hubs and a blanket for one of my nieces, and then I think I will be ready to go back to presenting my work for sale.
I have horses and I gotta make the money to feed them. One of them is a draft! Ugh! $$$$$$$

Another very good video on the technique and principles of plying. I have an original LeClerc wheel (bobbin driven)with a giant bobbin that I found in Victoria BC yonks ago. It is my dedicated plying wheel. Since I also use a walking wheel, I have a Lazy Kate with two bobbins that I made myself. I made a tension box made from a cardboard box and 3 dowel rods(per Eileen Chadwick, The Craft Of Hand Spinning). I place the Lazy Kate behind my chair and the tension box under my chair and of course the wheel in front of me. You are absolutely correct that the plied yarn should be relaxed(no tendency to twist) or real close to it. Be aware that cats have an intense fascination for yarn as it is coming off the bobbins of the Lazy kate.
I used to have a Louet, and I'm so sad I sold it. Those bobbin driven wheels are the best for plying! Also, an original LeClerc! What a treasure!

JillianEve in my opinion, you are a very talented educator as well as an expert in the full handling of fibre. I have spun lots of fibre in the past but moving onto Alpaca and found very little of use on the net until i came upon your superb series. Thank you. Now then what was the name of your carding machine please? I think I would love one some day soon.

Thanks for your descriptive style of teaching! 😊 I am feeling a bit mixed up though. It seems like you ply 2 different styles-- by that I mean, when you began your plying you held each 1 ply in each hand. Those plys joined together and it looks like only the pull of the wheel got the yarn onto the bobbin. Further along your video. It looks different- 1 hand holds the 1 ply’s and the other seems to be feeding/pushing the plied yarn onto the bobbin. Hope that makes sense. And do I see that right? And does it make a difference? I am having trouble getting a consistent ply.

Hey, new ply-er here. I am plying my second skein ever. I am doing all my spinning on drop spindles, which means they get a lot of time to rest. When I plied, I made sure that the 2-ply didn't double up on itself. However, when I then washed it, it did the bubble thing like your example of under-plied yarn. I'm guess the water allowed the stale singles to remember its twist. How do I ply stale singles that are balanced after I wash the 2-ply? I have spent a lot of time on google, and can't find much information on not under-twisting.

You mentioned having to do an entire re-spin? How is that done, please? I can't picture this; not enough hands..
Sometimes if I'm not satisfied with the twist in my yarn, maybe it is over twisted or under twisted, I can feed it back onto the wheel as if I am spinning it, but only for the purpose of adding or removing twist to it. That can help me get it all balanced out! 🧶
@@JillianEve well, I don't seem to be able to achieve a balanced yarn yet...but I enjoy your posts immensely and maybe I'll get it yet. Would you believe I've been spinning for 10 years, made some pretty things, but nobody ever taught me about balanced yarns. I wonder if you could do a video to show how this is done? I just picture yarn spitting out of the orifice, unraveling, and going in two different directions, and how can you wind them back up again? I for one will hang on every word! Thank you ...oh, BTW, while your background music is lovely it was a little hard to hear what you were saying. (Sorry, I'm a little hearing impaired) But wow, I enjoy watching!
@@kimreese9400 Yes, I'm going to do a video soon about making a balanced 3-ply yarn! I have had several requests for it so it is all queued up! I do apologize about the music. I think this was one of the first videos I added music to and I completely agree that I made it too loud. Just like spinning, UA-cam is a constant learning process! Unfortunately I can't do anything to change it now, but know that in the future, I'm keeping any background music much quieter! Happy spinning! 🧶💖

A empty toilet paper roll makes a great bobbin to go onto the wool spinner.....tried and tested.

I just want to say I don't like music when you are talking. The music makes it sound like a promotion film and for me makes it hard to listen (I'm Dutch 🤷♀️)
I'd rather take a beating with a brick stick than spin alpaca! I am a wool spinner I know my limits.
Why on earth have you put music on this video?!? I enjoyed the previous three. I did not have to struggle to hear you speak or to concentrate on the content. Two points 1) age related hearing loss starts at age 35, so from there on it is more difficult to make out what is said when music is in the background. 2) It is a complete distraction. When attention goes to the music - er, what did she just say? - rewind video. These both make the video stressful to watch. Would have loved to just listen - to you.
I'm so sorry about the music. I agree I set it too loud. UA-cam is certainly a learning process! While I can't do anything to change the music on this video now that it's published, I can say that I'm doing my best to make every video a great viewing experience by learning from my mistakes, and improving on each video I upload. 🧶💕

Please turn off the music or at least make it very very soft. For the hearing impaired it is painful.
I'm sorry. This was one of my first UA-cam videos. I made it 2 years ago. I've learned a lot about editing since then and my music is no longer so loud. It's a learning experience! I have plans to update my alpaca series and redo the videos so the music won't be so loud. I can't change it after it's published though. I'm sorry it was painful for you. 😔
