This video is spot on…if you have more time than money, you can skimp with cheaper suspension but you better have the skills or have experience installing suspensions. I give up counting all the frame swaps I’ve done because of old rides..dog legging down the road. Even front end alignment shops have a difficult time figuring out what’s jacked up. Just like framing a house…cross measure/triangulate all measurements to check square. We measure from ball joint’s to fixed point on rear axle. Double check wheelbase and checking square.
I did a heidts M2 kit in my 64 Nova, it was very high quality and straight forward to install. I have a 52 coupe I plan on doing the front suspension in some day, probably go with heidts or TCI. 👍🏻
Let me explain something to people. A lot of guys don’t know there ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to welding. You could have that thing tack welded 1 inch apart and it would hold up a battle ship. Most carbon welding wire is rated for 70000 lbs per square inch of weld.
No way!
I’ve been wondering this exact same thing and have been torn till now. Thanks!
I have installed mustang ll on my 57 chevy half ton truck and all parts are from speedway. Xept the cross member and Towers i dont remember where i perchased it. All in all very good parts.
My experience was using a Mustang II IFS from Southern Rods comparing to your video it appears it ,Ithe Helix parts like the a A arms the seals on the ball joints ,mine are already splitting and coming off. The biggest complaint was I, used a GM Saganau power steering pump . It worked fine for about 50 miles then the rack & pinion went crazy and blew out input shaft seal on the rack. I later found out I needed a reducer in the pump to drop the presssure . Now I’m finding out that Southern does not service their parts, I so far have not found a oil seal for the power rack!
I just installed a Mustang II kit from Heidt's in my '40 Ford coupe chassis on the way to a frame-up rebuild. I agree that the quality of their welds is FAR superior to any of the other brands you showed. EVERY component of the kit came with its own set of detailed instructions plus, as shown in the video, a 10-page booklet of instructions with exploded-view illustrations for their complete Mustang II Kit is packaged with the cross member. Their Customer Service/Tech Expert, George, was extremely helpful in answering my questions and helping me make sure I was ordering all the right parts for my application.
couldn't agree more. after this experience I'm a big fan of heidts. I will be using their stuff again in the future
Doing a TCI coil over kit right now. Coil overs are pretty decent, cross member and boxing plates are nice a- arms are stout. rotors plain only 4 1/2 on 5. $500 upgrade for otherwise. Calipers look Chinese. Swaybar is decent. Instructions do not exist for a 5 window. Had to cross breed a bunch of videos and look up specs from another manufacturer.
Dude! You save me major money!...1957 GMC truck and almost ordered the Helix. Thank you very much! Subscribed and keep up these great videos!
DON'T BUY THE HELIX!! or anything from JOHNNY LAW MOTORS or any other company from HOFFMAN GROUP! worst experience ever. I'm glad I went with Speedway Motors and Heidts! I'm glad this helped you make a wise decision!! thanks for subscribing and thanks for watching!
@@GODSPEEDGarage Thank YOU! Keep up the great work!
Canceled my helix kit I just ordered and went with the speedway kit instead! Thanks for the video was a ton of help and saved me some money and headaches
YES!!! that's exactly why I made this video... learn from my mistake!! I'm so glad you DID NOT go with the helix kit! you made the right choice. I'm so happy with the Speedway kit, and they are an amazing company to work with. they will do everything in their power to make it right. not so with HOFFMAN GROUP (Johnny Law Motors, Helix, etc.). thanks for watching! I'm glad it helped!
I installed one of these cheaper kits on my wife’s 67 mustang it came with everything I needed and no instructions I had to email them and get four pages from them not a lot of information but was able to figure the rest out I have a question about the ball joints are they all interchangeable and where can I purchase the better quality ones as of mine all already destroyed and I have not even drove it yet thanks !!👍🏻
A guy I'm building car for ordered a helix suspension for his car. I gave exact measurements and told him I didn't want it if I had to cut and weld on. And guess what no instructions either. And crossmember was too narrow. I called them back and was told its universal and you have to cut it. Now it is a very good looking kit with powder coated crossmember. The rotors are drilled and has coil over shocks..but I do have to cut crossmember and widen it almost 2 inches each side..
Thanks for posting this in-depth comparison. VERY helpful. BTW...really dug the recent video of all the Flattys, etc. dragging on dirt.
Hey great review I too am thinking of a mustang 2 now for my 51 styleline taildragger which I realise now I need air at the front, to be honest I was looking at the summit/helix but now will look elsewhere Thankyou as always a very thorough video all the best Jason
Thanks for the heads up! I'm in the middle of this part now-i know where to spend my money.
glad it was helpful. whatever you do - DON'T BUY FROM HELIX, JOHNNY LAW MOTORS, or any other company owned by HOFFMAN GROUP. I went to portland and saw their operation first-hand, plus dealing with them on the phone. terrible company, and worthless junk IMHO. spend the money and support good companies who actually care about their products and YOU the end user. you won't regret it.
Thank you for your comparison. I’m not sure which direction I am going on my ‘59 Apache. Nova subframe, Mustang 2 or leave the straight axle and upgrade the brakes and suspension. I don’t know how to weld yet but I want to learn. Thanks for the info.
Hopefully you have your suspension in place by now but for others…Camaro/Nova front ends are ok but usually take more time to install/fab core support mounts etc. Camber was always a problem..even when 2nd gen Camaro’s we’re new. Nova is same suspension as Camaro.
Your simplest solution is heidts mustang II or super ride. Fatman is good as well. We complete them in 2 days but give yourself 3-4 days or weekends. I run heidts super ride on my personal rides but customers typically go with mustang 2. It’s a,,,good enough suspension.
Kick ass video. I have used speedway kit in past. The ball joints suck replaced with moog other than that fit great welds are good lookin not the best but good enough. N yes speedways service is the best bar none.
Another ringing endorsement for an excellent review man. Is the Heidts cross member one of the universal ones where you select track width?
Great video, helped enormously. I have a 98 Jeep Cherokee 2wd 2dr that I'm putting a sbc in and it has a straight axle up front, so no IFS. 👎 Thanks for posting
Great job on this comparison. You included pricing as well which for some reason many comparisons leave out (key to the decision process). Can’t stress enough how your post editing is appreciated man. Good job. Clay
thanks brother that means a lot! post editing is more work than people think, but it's worth it to produce quality videos. glad this video helped you! whatever you end up purchasing - DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM HELIX, JOHNNY LAW MOTORS, or anything else from HOFFMAN GROUP. worst. experience. ever... check their BBB rating (since they deleted my review on their website)... ok. rant over... thanks again!!
GODSPEED Garage - Thanks for the heads up on them. Will steer clear.
Great video! I appreciate your research! The caliper brackets blew me away! Stamped steel? Absolutely not! The cast is probably cast steel rather than cast iron, and is way stronger. I wouldn't put the Helix kit on anything that would go above neighborhood speeds. It just looks like it would break or bend too easily. Again, thanks for the reviews!
IIRC the speedway kit ballpoints are moog units for Chrysler K cars
Hello All, I wish you had this vid out sooner ....LOL and that I had found it... I made the mistake of getting the Helix IFS kit a little way back, as you stated customer support totally sucks, I am not a pro at restoring car projects, this was... lol... supposed to be a relaxing hobby project, I am working my way through it though, with vids like yours and others, figuring out what is what, so I am making progress. I did order the kit thinking it was for my car (65 Mustang) as they ask for a car model when you order it, you get bags of parts with no instructions as to where they go, what little instructions (you have find someone to send them to you) you finally get are vague, and only get you so far, yes you have to make your own calculations to cut the crossmember and Shock tops to fit your car, which totally sucks because that's why I ordered my kit for a Mustang, but as you say, it is a universal kit so you need to modify it as needed unfortunately . If I had to do this over again I definitely would never use Helix again, pay the extra money for those other kits. Unless of course you are into pain and suffering and enjoy figuring out problems just for the fun of it..
GREAT ADVICE FROM ANOTHER PERSON WHO'S DEALT WITH HELIX and HOFFMAN GROUP!!! it was the same for me dealing with them... FORTUNATELY I live close enough to be able to drive the kit back up to their warehouse so I didn't have to pay for return shipping!! I was gonna do a follow up video, but decided not to because I didn't want all the negativity on my channel... horrible experience to say the least. and I will never purchase from them again. ALWAYS CHECK Better Business Bureau rating before dealing with a company! anyway, sorry you are dealing with the headache of a crappy company selling crappy products... wish I could help more... but thanks for watching!
When the crappy helix ball joints go bad in under a year the only replacement they offer cost close to $350 a pair
yep... exactly what i was thinking. BUY IT NICE OR BUY IT TWICE!!! thanks for watching!!
I recently picked up a 77 Mustang 2 to use front end on my 70 maverick. People saying that nothing will work
Help me out. Will it work under a 62 Fairlane 500 2 door?
Great video. You should do the same video for rear triangulated 4-links 👍
Nice job on the review, with people like you doing these reviews helps us viewer's make the better purchase. 👍
Thanx 4 sharing.
Thanks for watching! whatever you decide - DON'T BUY FROM HELIX!! OR JOHNNY LAW MOTORS OR ANYTHING OWNED BY HOFFMAN GROUP!!! check their BBB rating... it's terrible. so many stories of people getting screwed. I posted a review on Johnny Law's website for the kit I bought 3 TIMES and they removed it every time.
You didn’t mention the heights had the 7/8 tubing like the Chinese.
I was looking at the same kit.i know in suspension iam not cutting corners iam going with name brand on my 48 fleetline
Good information answered several of my questions and put to rest some of my doubts.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the info, I was just trying to figure out what one to go with on my 57 Chevy truck ✌️
glad it helped! whatever you do, DON'T BUY HELIX or anything else from JOHNNY LAW MOTORS. garbage product and worse customer service
@@GODSPEEDGarage Need help finding a front end suspension kit for 1948 DeSoto. Any suggestions
With a 1967 C10 truck I'm wondering about the mustang II rack. It's housing and piston diameter would pretty small, considering it was designed for a light weight car. I would think it may wear out quicker and develop leaks if used on a truck, 5.3L engine and accessories. Then consider forces larger tires may impose on bump-steer if not exactly level when fully assembled. Good side-by-side comparison on parts though. SpeedWay parts, the oldest speed shop in the nation, right there in Lincoln, NE. Great people!
Hi what do you say to Paul Horton's Welder Series? His crossmember costs $ 317 (Made in USA).
I haven't heard of it! but that's a great price for made in USA!
@@GODSPEEDGarage Please let me know if we can help with any parts in the future. We're a family business in Canada and have been making hot rod chassis parts since 1978.
awesome video dude, thanks man i was going to buy the cheap ebay kit, now i will be buying the speedway kit
YES!! I am in no way affiliated with Speedway, but they have always taken care of me... whatever you do - DON'T BUY HELIX!!! or anything from Johnny Law Motors (Hoffman Group) for that matter... they screwed me TWICE!! never again... glad I could help! THANKS FOR WATCHING!!!
That was an eye opening experience and well worth the price of admission. Thank you so much. I currently have a 51 Chev 5-window and this is a project I'm anticipating doing very soon (bummed I didn't get a tax refund this year). I'll likely go with the Heidts or TCI kit but was considering the Speedway kit. Though it does seem to be a good value, I like what I saw when you showed me the Heidts kit.
if you can afford heidts or TCI you should definitely go that route! I'm pleased with the Speedway kit, but ultimately ended up with heidts A-arms and crossmember, along with the heidts sway bar. whatever you do, DON'T BUY HELIX or anything from JOHNNY LAW MOTORS, or HOFFMAN GROUP. check their BBB rating... it's terrible. WORST. EXPERIENCE. EVER. ultimately about a $1200 mistake, that would've been more if I didn't live in Oregon and had to pay to ship the kit back!
I put new springs on my mustang ll and i didnt cut the springs and it sits good than with cut springs.
thanks a bunch for this vid buddy,!!!....i did notice they put the same picture of parts on the adds for different cars,it got me wondering....i was looking at this mustang kit for my 36 plymouth ,ill deffinatley steer clear...thanks again
glad it helped! DON'T BUY HELIX!! or anything from JOHNNY LAW MOTORS for that matter... complete garbage, and worse customer service
What happened to the Fatman Mustang II front suspension?
Awesome review at just the right time. Thanks!
I really enjoyed this review, very well presented and described, now I know what to stay away from. Like your style, thanks so much, I've Subbed
Thanks for watching!
you missed at least one budget kit out there, check with fatman fabrications for their mustang ll kits.
Excellent information - thank you!!
Thank you. That was very helpful.
I've got one but ackerman is there rack with mine not mounted 1930 ford can you please measure I have coil over shocked 12 inch mounting
Good comparison lots of good info keep it up
Take a look at full tilt suspension impressive kit
Just wondering if speed way offered an option for drilled and slotted rotors? And BTW thanks for the info, I was seriously considering the Helix kit, you saved my ass!
i'm soooo glad you didn't go with HELIX!! Johnny Law Motors, Hoffman Group are the WORST! (check their BBB page) i'm not sure if Speedway offers that with the kit. i would love to do slotted and drilled rotors. you can contact them and i'm sure they'll let you know. they have great customer service in my experience... THANKS FOR WATCHING!!!
i wish i had seen this video before i bought my helix suspension kit
Can a heidts subframe be used with the speedway kit?
Very very informative and helpful. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the video I was gonna go with Helix but now I'm definitely 🚫 NOT 🚫
YOU WILL BE GLAD you didn't buy the HELIX kit!!! I'm happy this helped!
Can you get a kit like that to fit a 40 Ford deluxe two door sedan
Great info...I’m just starting on a ‘36 Dodge coupe project and this helps greatly with my options! New subscriber
Awesome! Thank you! I'm also building a 29 dodge sedan!! post some videos of your 36!
Hi David. I'm also starting a 36 Dodge coupe and if you're further down the path I'd like to talk with you about some of your decisions.
joe strickland how can I reach you...without putting my contact info out there for everyone to see?
@@davidsmith3828 Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I've recently joined facebook to look for parts in their marketplace. If you have an account you could find me there. User Joe Strickland. Profile pic is a woodspirit carving. thanks
Hey Dave, Are you able to find me on FB?
The speedway kit looks alot better built to me that would be my choice!! Thank you for the video looking to replace my front suspension on my 1950 Chevy!! PS... Have you had any experience with Fatman Fabucation Kits?
I have not used Fatman kits, but I've heard good things. after this experience, I am a huge fan of Heidts
@@GODSPEEDGarage .. Hey brother can you give me the link where you purchase the Heidts kit I just like there kit better than the other one, I am like you on a budget can't afford alot .....
@@aaronson2540 you can go straight to the heidts website: www.heidts.com/part/mustang-2-front-suspension-ifs/ or you can google search "heidts mustang II". they also sell them at places like Jegs and Summit Racing among others. just to clarify - I used the SPEEDWAY kit: www.speedwaymotors.com/Mustang-II-IFS-Standard-Tubular-Control-Arms-Stock-Springs-and-Spindles,2089.html - the crossmember is sold separately, and these kits are specific for the vehicle you're putting it on. I went with the HEIDTS crossmember, and because of a snafu on Speedway's part, I got heidts lower control arms. Speedway is a great company, I'm glad I chose their kit. but for an extra $600 or so, you can go with the heidts kit. hope that helps!!
Thanks for the comparison!!
Thanks for watching!
Dang! Was hoping for a kit to build a mustang 2...
Great video thanks for the info! Can you please tell me why you went with the Hiedt crossmember and tower and not the speedway? I watched all of your videos on this and didnt hear how you decided that. Thanks.
tmg24 thanks for watching!! when I saw all the problems with the HELIX kit - especially the crossmember - I thought I could fix it by using a high-end crossmember with the HELIX components. WRONG... the HELIX components won't work - A arms are a different width, bolts are different size, track width and geometry would be thrown off... that's when I started exploring other options... I almost sent the crossmember back and went with the Heidts kit (which would've been another $500-$600), but summit would've charged a restocking fee plus shipping adding to the overall cost... I found the speedway kit, searched for reviews (couldn't find much - hence this video), called tech, asked a bunch of questions, and decided to go with Speedway and keep my crossmember. I am SO GLAD I DID!! (if you saw the install video it turned out great) I returned that piece of crap HELIX kit, which is another long story - they charged me an 20% restocking fee (even though it wasn't as advertised and there were a BUNCH of issues with it including damaged parts from poor packaging) and I had to pay shipping?!? I will never deal with JOHNNY LAW MOTORS or HELIX or any other company owned by HOFFMAN GROUP (check their BBB rating - it's horrible!!) I left a review of that kit on their website and THEY TOOK IT DOWN!!! in fact, there are NO reviews, which makes me wonder if they took other negative reviews down as well?!? I digress...
all in all it came down to the fact that I already purchased the Heidts crossmember. the speedway crossmember looks decent enough and I'm sure you'll be happy with it. I've been happy with everything I've purchased from Speedway. and their customer service is excellent.
I recommend Phil Schmidt at Mustang II Specialty Shop NOS used Obsolete
Great info, very informative and thanks for sharing
Not saying the helix is good or anything, but just going to point out a solution to one of your issues. The section you cut out to fit your frame, flip them over and weld in under the frame, to fill in rhe section the frame overhangs.
that's an idea... but there were a TON of other issues with the kit. they advertised it as if it was specific for my car, only to find out it's a UNIVERSAL KIT, and the track width was wider. it wouldn't work for my car. cheap ball joints, bearing, and other "consumable" parts. HORRIFIC welds. it didn't feel safe, let alone lacking quality. I'm glad I didn't put it on my car. I'm MUCH happier with the speedway kit, and with speedway's customer service and tech team.
@@GODSPEEDGarage i hear you but i just seen a simple fix to the overhang issue .
Ackerman where did you mount the rack
Great video, thanks! Cheers, Doug
informative video brother! thank you
Have you guys heard of Jamco suspensions. Was wondering if anyone had opinions on the brand
There's a special place in purgatory for Johnny Law motors...
YES!!! worst experience with any company I've ever dealt with...
@@GODSPEEDGarage The best part is, they have several other companies they're disguised as in Iowa and California. So you gotta be careful... EBay won't just give them the boot either. Sad.
Nice job. Thanks for the info.
Great video. Do you have a link to the speedway kit? Having a hard time finding it.
THANKS FOR WATCHING! here's the link to the exact kit I purchased in this video...

Mine is a split windshield
I noticed yours is a sold one
Is that stock?? Or something you did

I'm not 100% sure it will work for your application. I would recommend contacting the manufacturer to confirm. whatever you do... DON'T BUY HELIX OR ANYTHING FROM JOHNNY LAW MOTORS or HOFFMAN GROUP!!! worst experience ever... anyway, thanks for watching! hope it helped!
@@GODSPEEDGarage I found one on speedway but need to find a crossmember like you did. There was another company that sales a diy weld crossmember kit but I can remember where I saw it it was a hot rod company

oh man... spread the warning... it was the worst experience I every had with any company ever
I'm building a 56 Fairlane whats the best front end and rear end swap suggest
Fatman Fabrications has kits for most anything, the best kits out there in my opinion. You don't have to install a universal kit and modify to make it fit!
I'm still debating if I can do this in my driveway since I have no garage space
Hell yes you can garage makesit easyer in bad weather. But it dont do it for you.
Thanks bro!!!! Good info for the do it your self guys. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Speedway A-arm weld at 10:21 didn't have proper shielding gas... lots of pinholes in the weld. Looks like some cold lap on the top weld too... That's about the only bad thing I can see on it.
i noticed that too... called speedway and they 2-DAY AIR shipped me a new set with a return label... they are a GREAT company. i don't hesitate to recommend shopping with them. HELIX on the other hand... ugggghh... WORST COMPANY EVER. Johnny Law Motors, Hoffman Group (all the same company)
would you recomend a bolt on kit from speedway
I don't have any experience with a bolt on kit, sorry. most of the kits I've seen are weld-on, but you do need a quality welder and you need to know what you're doing
They gave us stickers for extra horsepower ....I nearly pissed myself.
Good intel, thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Iam doing heidth kit already
excellent choice! I agree with you... don't cut corners when it comes to suspension. it can be life or death - literally. you won't be disappointed with Heidts in my humble opinion
What about fat man and Camaro front clip 67-69
Ty bro
Hi do You know to happen the speedway kit part number ?
Thanks 🙏
Im gonna buy Heidts stuff . Im building a 34 ford in Portland and am at the stage of crossmember and front suspension . Im totally buy American at this point . id rather pay a bit more and support American business.
Thanks for your info....
Billy Sells Portland Or.
Hello from Sisters, Oregon!! Heidts is great! if I could afford it I would go with their kit. the good thing about the Speedway kit is I can swap out with Heidts stuff later if/when the speedway stuff breaks down. I agree though, I try to support USA made companies as much as I can even when it costs a little bit more. totally worth it. thanks for watching and commenting!
Hey man looking for a mustang 2 kit for my 59 Apache . What would you suggest ?
hey! i have a 58 apache!! i love that truck... anyway, i would suggest the best kit you can afford! TCI and Heidts are pretty common top-end kits. Fatman Fab is another great kit. and there are lots of fab shops making kits. check with Speedway to see if they have the kit for your application. WHATEVER YOU DO... DO NOT BUY HELIX!!! or anything from JOHNNY LAW MOTORS, or HOFFMAN GROUP for that matter... (they are all the same company). it was the worst experience i've EVER had with any company. check there BBB page... they are the worst. ok... rant over haha! best of luck i hope that helps!! post some videos of your project! THANKS FOR WATCHING!
Timely advice thank you.

Awesome Video. Thanks
HELPFUL THANK YOU.
Can I please call you for more questions
U have instructions on a mustang ll kit but you didn’t order it? The description says mustang ll...
are you referring to the heidts instructions? I ordered the heidts CROSSMEMBER and they sent me instructions, which included instructions for the complete kit, even though I only ordered the crossmember
From what I've seen, Helix is crap, sometimes warped control arms, I would be checking tube thickness
HELIX is absolute garbage, and worse customer service. don't buy anything from JOHNNY LAW MOTORS, HOFFMAN GROUP, or HELIX
Good vid, good man.
good info thanks
I have dealt with that Hoffman group, Johnny Law Motors. It took them almost 6 months to send the complete kit for a transverse front axle T-Bucket kit. The first shipment came with an inventory and identified the parts that were still pending... Why the F* do you advertise a "kit" but not have the parts in stock? In the end they managed to send all the parts but they came in with no plan. 6 of 8 bolts one week, then 3 of 4 bushings another. Then the 2 missing bolts... totally unprofessional and ridiculous. dealing with them on the phone wasn't terrible but it should not have been necessary
Speedway rocks!
I've never had a bad experience with them. great company, customer service and products!!
Wow this video is a eye opener i almost bought the one from ebay for my 66 🐐. Thanks brah!!
you won't regret it if you spend a little more money to get one from a reliable company like Speedway!! glad I could help! THANKS FOR WATCHING!!
Bought mine on ebay… had to grind down the caliper mounting brackets because they were machined wrong. Other than that it was fine…. Still haven’t driven and have to to get it aligned we’ll see how that goes
What’s a tax return?
I'm not sure. you'd be better off any of the companies involved. Speedway has an awesome tech department. I do know for sure Speedway parts work with the Heidts crossmember and towers. hope that helps.
These kits use mopar ball joints
good stuff!
good info pal..
