Pepper and Egg Sandwich | The Chicago Style Egg Sandwich Recipe

- This is how you make the ultimate Chicago Style Pepper and Egg Sandwich. Soft scrambled eggs, stewed sweet peppers and Turano French bread ( the same bread used for Italian beefs in Chicago) give this pepper and egg recipe the true Chicago flavor.
The secret to this Lent recipe is stewing peppers the day before. It makes the flavor so much better by allowing all of the spices to infuse into the peppers. This is the best sandwich in the world during lent! I use green bell peppers, the same peppers for Italian beef sandwiches.
** Sweet Peppers Recipe **
1 green bell pepper
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 tsp kosher salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tsp dry oregano
1 tsp granulated garlic
1. Preheat a saute pan over medium heat
2. Add the peppers and cook until they lightly soften
3. Add the seasoning and stir well to incorporate
5. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until the peppers are soft but al dente
6. Cool the peppers and store overnight until ready to use

“Peppers and eggs that’s what I should’ve had”
Uncle Jun 🤓
Fuck this I'm going to Boca
Mr. Magoo!
That’s exactly what the guy from Curb Your Enthusiasm said.
I legit came here from Sopranos when I saw him say this.
I recently went out to Texas and New Mexico. I had peppers and eggs with what they call hatch green peppers and a homemade tortilla. MADONE!! 🤌
Yum!
Just like my little Sicilian mama made for me on the South Side of Chicaaaaago!
This is the best comfort food evah!
Brings back wonderful memories of her and my dad.
I'm going grocery shopping in the morning, gonna get me a baguette and peppers, I gotz da eggs already.
After watching this, it reminded me that I gotta make braciole soon.....it's been awhile.
Thanks Mike!!!
My girlfriend is a vegetarian so pepper and egg is a great go-to meal we can both enjoy. I've tried a few recipes, but being from Chicago this recipe hits the spot while others did not. Thanks!
So basically your mind played games with you..because it's no different than any other place that makes italian pepper and egg sandwich... Everyone from Chicago thinks their stuff is so much better for no reason at all...
@@gballs007 Aaaaand you've discovered the Chicago Effect. Where Chicagoans insist that everything from Chicago is better than anything from anywhere else. Example: "CM Punk is the greatest wrestler of ALL TIME!!!" The Chicago Effect.
I just subscribed! My Dad grew up on Taylor Street. In the 60's and 70's we shopped on Harlem Avenue in Chicago on Saturdays for lunch meat, Italian sausage and bread!!! M. Vigiletti ❤️
Making it tonight after work!!
omg i always make pepper and eggs i was brought up on that.. delicious.. plus potatoe and eggs with onion
Back again, for another lent when my family says 'Mom, please make the pepper egg sandwich this Friday!' Thanks so much for this easy and delicious recipe!!!
Nice video! Johnnie's in Elmwood Park has peppers and eggs every Friday, they are as amazing as Johnnie's beef !
They add sausage if you want to pay a little extra - which I always do, of course. It's freakin' heaven...
Grew up in Chicago, as a teenager found a place that served pepper, egg and Italian sausage sandwiches during Lent. Shhhh, tell no one. Pure heaven. Thank you for the recipe. See more sin in my future.
I only committed a venial sin, I had my sandwich dipped in the beef juices. Had the best of both worlds, peppers and eggs and gravy bread..
Pepper and egg on a hoagie roll is a staple at hoagie shop in Philly during lent. They will make them year round.
Being an Italian from Brooklyn growing up on this very nice job Michael. Many use red peppers but I agree green superior for this. Excellent job. Amazed many dont serve this sandwich as can eat for breakfast, lunch or dinner and also can add potatoes to give it that extra kick.
Green is definitely the way to go!
A lot of traditional Italians also add small cut up boiled potato pieces then put on the grill with the rest of ingredients (or make potato and egg sandwiches as well...)..but the green peppers, egg and potato sandwich is the way to go!
Chef you nailed it!! And I have a black belt in eating pepper and egg sandwiches.
I lived in Chicago. My favorite sandwich
Gotta try this
Oh man, that's looks so simple and delicious. As the old saying, the simple things in life R often the best. I'm gonna make this ASAP.
Excellent! Trying tomorrow!
Portillo's pepper egg sandwich is the seasonal treat. Thanks for the recipe and this sure looks easy and delicious. Will definitely try and will add some hot peppers as toppings
like to mix in some red peppers too for sweetness
A favorite of my Mom's.
Too good to have only during Lent.
That looks great! Perfect for Friday’s in lent!
You know it!
Great Video. Best pepper and egg sandwich video I ever saw.
Try Sip and Feast -- the New York Italian version. This looks insipid by comparison.
Just what I was looking for 😮💨 lent time is great for pepper 🫑 and eggs 🥚 🥰🔥 thank you 🙏🏼
YummY......
Definitely going to make this ! May even do one with the candie jalapeno I made the other day.
That sounds tasty!
one of my favorite things during Lent - - and at home any time!! I never included oregano before, duh! YUMMY
That looks absolutely magnificent. Wish I had one right now. Great video!
Thank you so much!
Can’t wait to try it!
Thank you! You are going to love it!
That's a thing of beauty
Thank you so much for this recipe!!! It’s Perfect! Recently started using Poblano for my pepper and egg sandwiches. 👌🏻
I was thinking the same, or Anaheim.
This is wild, there is also a sandwich VERY similar to this in the NYC/Long Island area!
Classic. Perfectly prepared
Oh yeah! Yes could eat this sandwich every day!
Check out ferro's on 200 w. 31st next time your in chicago...they serve pepper and egg sandwiches all year long and all day. Get the one with potatoes added...so good. Good job with the peppers in the video!
Sorry for the late reply. I live in Chicago so I will definitely check it out! Thanks for the tip!
Ferros, Freddie’s and ricobenes serve it all year round in Bridgeport , I love it, Freddie’s is my fave pepper and egg so far
Making my green peppers now! Can’t wait to make the rest of the sandwich tomorrow.
Awesome! I want to hear how you like it!
Italian food is the best can't wait to make this⚘🥂
Great video
Add a little cut up boiled potato to it..makes a great sandwich
Yeah!!!
NY/NJ you can get these year round. Out here in AZ where I am now... not so much...
OMG!!! I am salivating! I have not been able to find a good P & E sandwich since I moved from Chicago. I live currently in Scottsdale, and with all the Chicagoans out here, I am shocked there is not a good P & E!! Would you add cheese, parmesan?
They don’t serve it at the Portillos by you? I don’t ever put cheese but I know some people that like provolone on it
@@ChefPonzio no, I actually called the Scottsdale location and was told they don’t make it. I was back home in the Chicago suburbs right before Lent and did enjoy one at Buona Beef!
Buano beef serves one on Friday’s year round. So good. I get it with sausage.
I never added sausage to it. That sounds so good!
Thankyou Chicago👍...watching from the Netherlands...👁👁
Yummy
Yummy😊
Thinking about making one today…
I tried one at the Rendezvous a week ago and it was absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this. I am excited to try making it myself someday.
Thank you so much! I grew up eating these regularly.
@@ChefPonzio I got one of these skillets yesterday and had to try it out immediately. OMG! The aroma of those peppers in the house was amazing! It was hard to wait overnight to try the eggs. The sandwich turned out fantastic! Almost as good as at The Club. Thank you so much.
Our pizzeria serves them year 'round.
Could not sell that sandwich in NJ...need peppers cut smaller & add some onion
I add onions and real garlic , the Silician Way
😋
Leftover garlic bread and leftover tomato sauce goes well with the bread usually is the cut up some tomato cheese and put it on the bread and bake it with garlic and then I put the egg on top with Hot peppers cheaper make sure you take the membrane out and the seeds you don't want to kill anybody make sure you have your milk if they can't take the heat if they want more just add a teaspoon of Louisiana hot sauce or Paul Taylor's hot sauce you understandthat's it
Jalapeños and mushrooms along with onions would be a great addition to the eggs plus some cheese.
Use a flatbread or a taco shell or if I can find it I use French bread lots of French bread works good
Letting the peppers sit overnight was life changing for me....thank you!
Oh yeah! The flavors definitely enhance and they sweeten up nicely
Bruh! Holy cow.
Pepper and egg sandwiches are available other times than just lent!
I wonder what would happen if I added some diced onion to this..? 🤔
What make is the cleaver used to cut the peppers
Spice that sandwich up with some Chicago style giardiniera
Why not use red Bell pepper, they're naturally sweetest?
Is this sandwich ever prepared with onions too?
It can be but in my experience it is not common
Yes, onions and hot cherry tomato peppers and green peppers.
Pepper 🫑 onnines egg s 50 egg 50 jalapeno peppers 250 eggs take out the bread the membrane and the seeds so it's not so hot and I put it on a toasted bread butter really good it's the best lots of garlic and lots of onions at the end and that's all I add and some cheese grits the good cup of coffee good thing of OJ just the way your wife likes it she's the breadwinner of the family just don't forget to bend over when you see her am going home 🏠
A mix of red peppers and cubanelles are better than green bells.
Hm Arent Red Bellpeppers not better? cause the have more Flavour
this was recommended on a Sopranos video where someone ate a peppers and eggs sandwich lol (ua-cam.com/video/ausiwiNai0g/v-deo.html)
now I'm hungry
What about adding some hot giardinera to the eggs?
100%!!!
Cheap have a cheap Italian wine for usually she uses the cheapest stuff good toast of bread good butter so garlic powder and maybe if you're lucky jalapeno peppers with a membrane out and stuff and you be lucky if you get an egg sandwich in the morning you know what I mean don't ever piss her off make sure you have good times for her she leaves that's a good Italian wife Melissa you know when she cooks good you smell it for a mile away
eggs looked overcooked by the time you were done
Looks great but where's the cheese?
Bud, where did you get the Chicago from. My grandmother came to America in 1913 , landed in NY and they were eating it back then. So originated in Italy, brought to NY where you can get it in any deli or pizzeria ANYTIME of the year. Chicago tried to steal pizza and now peppers and eggs.
Yo you cut the end of bread
Fuck yea!!!! With mozzarella and Hot Giardiniera.
Needs onion! Grated cheese
Yes eggs hot peppers fresh butter corn oil add garlic cut up 5 fresh jalapeno peppers I take the membrane out chop them up big chunks throw them in the thing about a half a cup and some scrambled eggs two or three scrambled eggs to it and it's done and I'll put lettuce tomato onion and pickle and I put my thing on top with some cheese parmesan cheese some dry cheese I put on it I go to town with my Dr pepper and my legs potato chips barbecue bottle for Lay's barbecue potato chips and a big deal pickle
…And Damatos bread in Chicago has rats.
greasy af. also that´s not jullienne 😆
Your supposed to bake the pepper first and remove the skin! Smh
Chicago my ass it’s an Italian thing so it’s Italian peppers and eggs
There's no sweetness in green pepper
CAN'T WAIT TO TRY MAKING THIS THE WAY YOU DO!!!!
