    The bolt peaks around 50kW, you should only be using a 350kW station if that is the only one available. Leave those open for faster charging cars.

      Not all the fault is on the driver, new EV owners might not understand that the fastest charger speed might not be the best for them and others. Personally I think EA and the others should had a system in place to notify EV drivers that the charger they are using is faster than their car and slower chargers are available that will still change at full speed. I think Chargeway's numbering system is really good but it still has the issue that drivers will drive a car with speed of 4 but see a 7 and think it will charge their car faster.
      Absolute worst case they could start charging slow charging fees if you aren't using a charger that matches the speed of your car if one is available although that probably wouldn't work well until charger reliability gets better.

    We just got our 2023 Bolt in November and have been very happy with it so far. It's probably good to get it during our cold months (Colorado) so we know how it performs in the winter. We've been using ChargePoint chargers in town and it charges to about 215 to 225 miles depending on how cold it happens to be. I do see that a mile driven in the cold isn't exactly a mile, but if I am driving down a slight downhill grade, it does go longer than a mile. I expect spring and summer will be different. We haven't taken it on any road trips yet, but our daughter lives in the Aspen area and there are free ChargePoints about 2 blocks from where she lives. We might take it skiing there in the spring. Not sure if my skis will fit inside (maybe). We have another vehicle, a 2011 Chevy Traverse that has 260k miles and we plan on driving that (road trips, too) until it dies. I need to have a level 2 charger installed in my garage now. We have the choice of ChargePoint Home Flex or Enel X Way JuiceBox. The ChargePoint is faster, but I've heard of quality issues with it (over time). Not sure what to get

    I got BOLT EUV a week back. One thing I am realizing is unless you charge at home EV does not make sense.
    Case in point my MDX gives 27 mpg on highway. For $3/gallon of gas it comes out to $0.11/mile.
    DC Fast charging in DFW area is $0.60/kwh. So it's $39 to charge BOLT EUV to 100%. If you get 220 miles then the cost is $0.17/mile.
    I think hybrids will fit the math perfectly. Real use of EVs is not road tripping instead these are best suited for around town with low home charging rates.

    • @TKevinBlanc
      @TKevinBlanc Рік тому

      Where do you pay $3 for a gallon of gas? You get more than 220 miles in a Bolt EV for a full charge. You're rounding in the favor of your presumptions. Your point is still valid that if you aren't able to charge at home, an EV makes much less sense, at least in terms of energy costs. They still require almost no maintenance (brakes, oil changes, filter changes, etc.), so they're cheaper to own.

  • @Longsnowsm
    @Longsnowsm Рік тому +4

    Infrastructure is the biggest problem. Not enough chargers, not reliable chargers, not enough fast chargers. I know with the Bolt speed with DCFC isn't an issue, but for those with faster charging cars finding fast chargers is tough and if you get off the beaten path you are lucky to find any chargers at all let alone fast chargers.

    • @Longsnowsm
      @Longsnowsm Рік тому +1

      @@LloydM Bad news is that Tesla's announcement with the White House stated they are only opening up like 7500 chargers. So it is only a tiny portion of the Tesla network. I don't look for that to help us very much. Tesla should have been told that you open it all up for the public funds or you get nothing. Who ever negotiated that deal got the short end of the stick and Tesla is in the driver seat.

    Thanks for sharing your experience with your Bolt. I think I made the right decision with my 2021 Rav4 Prime purchase in 2021. I’m not ready for a fully electric vehicle until maybe the next decade when battery technology becomes more advanced and charging infrastructure becomes more established across the nation.
    My Prime gets around 600 miles total range when fully charged and when the gas tank is filled up. So my road trips are worry free and the ~45 EV miles take care of my daily commute needs.
    Considering I got my Prime for MSRP at $43K in addition to the $7,500 tax credit that was available in 2021, it was a deal that I couldn’t pass up because I knew the tax credit wouldn’t last that long for this particular vehicle.

    I’m in the middle of a 600 mile road trip in a Bolt. Got conned by Hertz into renting it (the website implied they only had Teslas). Never again. We’re 8 hrs into our trip and only halfway there. Normally the whole trip is 10 hrs. Pathetic charging speed. Totally unacceptable for any long trip. Ran into a young couple with the same Hertz “deal” who got conned the identical way. Basically ruined their vacation. They were in the market for a new vehicle and wanted to check out an EV. After this experience the husband said he felt like buying the biggest diesel, smokiest PU he could find. 😅 between Hertz’s dishonesty and Chevys bad product this trip has convinced me to forget EVs as a viable option. At least for the foreseeable future.

    Nice video I like your honest viewpoint. Had a 2018 Bolt and thru the GM buy back was able to get a 2022 Launch Edition Bolt EUV for virtually pennies. I use mine basically for work commutes and average weekend running around town. It is great for that and having a charging station in my garage I have never used public stations, but with the number that I see not working the average American is not going to cozy up to electric cars too soon. Really need to build a reliable infrastructure first. I don't buy into the BS hype that they are better on the planet because they are definitely not, but they are a blast to drive. Since 2018 I have averaged approx. $25 a month to charge due to my all-local tripping so it fits my needs great.

    EV Charging etiquette 101: If your car can't charge at high speeds (like the Bolt), DO NOT use the 350kW chargers, if there is a 150 available. It's the same as a gas car ICE'ing an EV charger.
    We realize that new owners do not know these things, so the word needs to be spread via media like UA-cam.
    I actually want to thank the creator of this video for posting this up, because it's a perfect way to let EV owners know about things like charging etiquette.
