This episode is the first hard indication (there were previously a few hints) that while Frieren is stupidly old by human standards she's actually very young by elf standards. This duality is apparent in her character if you look for it.
I'd say somewhat young, not very young. After all, after saying she is young, Kraft proceeds to say both he and Frieren have lived a long time, and he appears to treat her as an adult. Potential SPOILERS below Further, there is evidence Kraft is less than 2,000 years old. So him saying she is young would be more like a forty year old calling a twenty year old young.
I always don't like this interpretation of this episode, saying frieren is young when elf is already on the brink of extinction means not a lot of elf have even reach frierens age, it's just that serie and kraft is just stupidly old.
12:46 And that's why Fern is almost undetectable even for Frieren, he taught her to suppress her manna since he found her. Also, in episode 2 during one of the "years passing" montage when Heiter is sunbathing, you can see Frieren draw a circle around Fern in the sand. It's to show her how much manna she should release while suppressing it.
Fun Fact: The insert song, “Bliss,” was used as the ending for the series’ four-episode premiere on Japanese TV. It is indeed sung by Milet but it was also composed by Evan Call, the composer of the OST.
I always found Graf Granat's claim that they'll always remember Frieren to be a little bittersweet. Cause so far, everything we've seen points to the idea that they won't _literally_ remember. The world will move on, and the names of great heroes will be forgotten. Kraft mentions he's done great righteous deeds, yet Frieren has no idea who he is. But at the same time, their act of kindness will still make an impact, as the city lives on. Also, I love the idea of Frieren showing up 400 years later asking for a favor, and Granat's great-great-great-great-great-grandchild has no idea who she is. I imagine Frieren would be disappointed, but not surprised.
Yes, as we see later, Kraft once saved the world, like Frieren and her party, but no one knows who he is. Even if their statues used name plaques (as many people have pointed out) it's not clear people would really remember. Another example: Frieren walks into a celebration for the heroes, she looks exactly like she always did, yet no one notices her or realizes who she is. She does not hide her name and yet, 80 years after the events, most people don't recognize her name -though many remember Himmel. Eventually, Frieren will be in Kraft's situation.
thank you for sharing this! I love to know all about this little details we miss as western audience just because of culture! I love to see those little details everywhere in anime and manga! You have such a rich culture filled with all of this you could say "magical traits!". Have a wonderful day! and thank you once more!
To me, Heiter and Eisen created this adventure for Frieren. They wanted to help her. They wanted to make her life more fulfilling. So they created the perfect companions for her. Young companions that will have alot of years with her. And they set her up to travel to see Himmel again. The set up the goal of the journey. This is Frieren's story, but the are the authors😁
the interpretation i like of the line "that's just something we desire" is theres no proof that the goddess will actually be there to praise kraft when he dies but he believes in it anyway. Just because Kraft "needs" the goddess to be real doesnt make her real. It's just something we desire. then kraft responds by calling out Frieren essentially saying aren't you doing the same thing going on this journey to heaven? kind of similar to back when Heiter was saying its more convenient to believe that heaven exists. it doesnt really matter if its true or not, just the act of believing it's true can make life less painful, especially for an elf that lives so long. kraft even calls frieren young since she hasn't reach that point in her life yet of "needing" to believe in the goddess.
I'm not a religious person but I absolutely love how religion is handled in Frieren. It focuses entirely on belief and how it can improve a person's life as seen through various people like Heiter and Kraft
Religion is a coping mechanism to deal with the cruelty of life. This isn't bad or good. What matters is whether it improves the lives of others. When I was younger I was more of a pseudo-intellectual that wanted others to conform to objective truth but as I've gotten older and wiser I see the utility in the fragile having something to soothe their ailing heart with. I think it's rather beautiful conceptually. Even if it doesn't exist simply believing that it does may help some get through life. I don't like when people use it as convenient excuse not to treat others well so I dislike organised religion in general. Also, the belief system in Frieren seems to mirror shintoism in that they care less about converting others and thinking in absolutes and more about improving the mental health of the citizens.
4:52 I believe the reason reporting on trimming the trees was important enough to interrupt the meeting is that it is related to the barrier. Perhaps they had to attach something to the Flamme tree to allow Lügner and such in.
3:12 Further, the scales were a manifestation of Aura's magic. Only a demon could wield them (Frieren notes the magic is beyond what humanity's magic can do, including her own), and they probably disintegrated back into mana when Aura died.
Stark made it pretty clear at the end of his fight that he was fine. He said he was prepared to die, but her hits were so weak he realized he didn’t need to worry about her killing him. That’s why there was no real need for concern.
In translated version I watched Frieren said to Kraft that the Goddess walked the lands only once - during the Mythical Era. But in this version her words are different.
They eventually get to why she doesn't say goodbyes. This show seems to have a way to get around to addressing every aspect of how/why she acts the way she does.
Äußerst is the name of the city where they intend to take the 1st Class Mage Exam. It's pronounced "Oyserst", kinda like "oyster". The ß is actually like double "s" in German.
Loved the conclusion to the Aura arc and they showed us that they spent time with the town and helping clean things up with the montage and song. Wonderful feelings. Kraft is a cool character. He's lived such a longer life than Frieren it seems to have everyone that knew of his rightious deeds has died and that's why he believes in the Goddess now.
I like how the entire party can relate to Kraft at some level. For Frieren it's the fact he's an elf, for Fern it's his religion, and for Stark it's his martial training. Even though it was a relatively brief encounter, they all shared something in common with him :)
This episode serves as the perfect interlude between the before and after of this season. "Bliss" is simply a masterpiece. For the next block of episodes I recommend watching 13 and 14 together. I, having started with the manga, watched episodes 12 through 17 of the animated adaptation in one evening. Take your time, there is still so much to see in this wonderful first season. Ps: A request, if possible, if you are considering a future anime to make reactions to for inclusion in the channel, I highly recommend Oshi no ko. Take your time, the first episode is an hour and twenty.
I would love a series of just random stuff they did as the new or old crew or just a bunch of shorts from both. Even though its nothing a like I would say slime Diaries would be a good comparison to what I would love from this.
Frieren say, "want to be remembered is a desire". Kraft ask, "is the existenst of heaven also just a desire?". Is it wrong for chasing a desire seems the main issue in that converstion. Thats my take.
😊 I’m in my fifties now, and one of the sadnesses I feel is of Legacy, not necessarily mine; but in general. When I was born, in March of ‘69; they had yet to step on the moon. 🤔 And now, some guy named Elon is working towards Mars. The World is full of Young New Things, but my perspective protects me from the fears of change … 😅 Anyway, I relate to these Elves, and cry over their perspective on the world. So Beautiful, I can hardly stop my tears- of Joy and of Loss. 😌 Thank 🙏 You Anime … my heart is strengthened by your continuous effect on the future.
Kraft get tojied, literally xD he is probably more than 4000years old or older I love how they used medicine based facts, as a nurse its every time a cool surprise. The letter that looks like a b is a sharp SZ. We in Germany used this like in the Word "Äußerst"(the most far point out there) or "Außerhalb" (out there/outside). Fun fact, in Indonesia translate krafts says a "warrior monk" but idk why in english translate kraft only says a "monk". But u will know in the next episode krafts before become a monk he is a warrior.
Isn’t normally the monk class similar as a warrior class? As I’m aware monk class fights with martial arts and no weapons I guess that’s why the warrior was not added to the Translation since being a warrior would mean the use of a weapon
@@wilpalkiathe warrior monk archetype is a eastern concept, which got more popular in the west after RPGs became a thing, but the monk archetype in the west would be a christian monastery monk (like the ones the vikings raided), so not warriors
So fun fact because we might not see Kraft's story for a while, Kraft as lived for far longer than Frieren as, if Frieren is over 1000 years old, Kraft is rougly tripple if not 4 times that and his feats are just insanity to think about for someone that does not use magic in this world, Kraft is a STRAIGHT HANDS fighter. Spoiler from way bellow so expand the comment at your own risk. Kraft was also a member of AT LEAST 1 party of heroes and they were much stronger than what we can ever expect with insane deeds to boot.
It's suspicious that Craft is asking her about his past deeds. It's possible that he's glad that his evil deeds aren't known. Even in the real world, not everyone who believes in God is a good person. This work has a tendency to confront such problem definitions.

@@Ryodraco Well... (SPOILERS!)
Kraft's young compared to Serie, considering she's hinted at having been around *since the dawn of Human Civilization*
