I love that you keyed in on that moment in the ruins where Fern peeks over Frieren's shoulder - that's one of like three moments between those two over the course of the series that I believe show how truly intimate their familial bond is without saying a word or calling any attention to it. The first was in the herbalist's shop in episode 2, when Fern has the seed rats up her sleeve and Frieren comes over to stand behind her. Frieren leans over Fern, and Fern leans back into her and looks up - in that moment, regardless of whatever conflict or uneasiness may be between them consciously, their unspoken mother-daughter relationship shows through. The scene in the ruins has a similar vibe, just with an older child. It's brilliant writing and directing, and it doesn't seem like a lot of reactors catch those little subtle moments, so it's cool that you did. 😊
I caught onto those moments too. It shows that actions speak louder than words about the nature of their relationship. Just like it's also with Fern getting Frieren out of bed every day, doing her hair, dragging her to see the sunrise, Frieren getting birthday presents for Fern, patting her head, the interaction we saw in this episode that you mentioned and the list goes on and on. It's really cute to watch how relatively quickly (especially for Frieren) they have grown comfortable with each other.
I think when Frieren said “ a mere ten years” at the end; it’s in a different context now. Before it felt more like she was saying as it was insignificant. Now she feels that the ten year journey will be short for her, but she knows it’s significant. Like the term, “Nothing maters”; it can be interpreted in both a positive or negative way
It's like saying "it's just a pebble" after learning that a pebble can start an avalanche. With the added context, the previously ignorant statement turns into a reminder that no matter how insignificant something may seem, it's worth paying attention to and can have unexpected consequences.
At this point Fern's been with Frieren since she was about eight years old, so Frieren basically helped raise her and she's underestimating the bond they have. Frieren shows more physical affection to Fern that she's shown to any other character in all four episodes, doing things like patting her head and sleeping on her lap, and Fern is also comfortable sleeping on Frieren's shoulder or brushing her hair and so on. They're family but they're both a bit oblivious.
I just have to say that you two have great chemistry in discussing what you think about these shows. The conversations are genuine, and it really feels like you aren't reacting or choosing topics just because you know the camera is there. That's rare and refreshing to see on UA-cam. Most reactor channels can't get away with just letting things happen as they happen, but you two are naturals at keeping things interesting, and the editing choices seem well done to keep the pacing brisk but digestible as well. You have fun watching these shows, and that really comes through on screen to your audience. So keep up the good work!
I think Heiter and Eisen were so adamant about sending Frieren to Aureole because they wanted her to have some closure with Himmel, and if anything, to bid him a proper farewell. It's totally possible Aureole isn't even real but if she indeed gets the chance to speak with Himmel, it will probably only be about those things she regrets not saying when he was alive. Romance is out of the question, he's not coming back from the dead. And yeah, so far the anime has covered the first 60 chapters of the manga which is still ongoing and currently 131 chapters long.
exactly. It can´t be about coming together and live happily ever after, as much as some people seem to wish for. I mean, he´s dead for about 80 years now, But yes, closure I think is the thing she´ll get speaking to him.
@@ShnNar1000x Yeah, for sure. 14 is probably my favorite episode and chapters 117-118 of the manga made me cry my eyes out. But... SPOILER WARNING The only way I can see Himmel and Frieren ending up together is if Frieren dies, which is highly unlikely. If Serie is any indicator, she probably has more than 10 000 years left. But I do believe that during their journey Frieren will come to understand she loved and still loves Himmel, romantically, in every sense of the word. (You could argue it has already happened in the manga.) They will probably confess their love for one another but Frieren will still have to move forward. Himmel is dead and nothing is going to change that. It's super sad but that's how it is :(
The idea that it's not just the beauty of the world you see, it how those around you are illuminated in joy, a good meal shared is twice as delicious; the mosaic of the two is the the true cumulative beauty of the moment.
Ever since the flower field scene where Eisen and Heiter are unabashedly frolicking in the field together, I have loved the relationship between them. Also Eisen is just plain cute.
One thing I recommend without giving any spoilers is to enjoy it a little better try to watch episodes 8-9-10 at the same time, even if you release it later for a better enjoyment overall.
10 bucks says Himmel was the Fern-level of caring for Frieren to wake her up in the mornings. Can totally see him brush her hair lol Also when Frieren opened that chest on the pirate ship is a pretty rare sight. She usually has horrible luck with those kind of things.
I think the "mere 10 year adventure" has changed meaning for Frieren. She used to say it with indifference, and now she says it with a soft smile. I think a mere 10 years used to mean that it was too short to matter when you live for thousands of years, and now with her experience, she thinks it is too short and that's a shame because she wants to make the most out of it.
Fabulous! Fireren Friday!!! And Flamme the Legendary Mage was Frieren's master a thousand years ago??? Whoa! That was such a great moment when you find out and you see Flamme planting the tree. Flamme is eihter a very good study of people or she has some seeing powers. It'll have a second season. The show's too popular not to.
Just subbed because both of you are the most invested and thoughtful about this show I have seen anybody yet, I highly recommend checking out Dungeon Meshi after Frieren as both have similarly stellar character writing, and one could argue that Dungeon Meshi has even better character designs and world building.
One point: the whole journey took 10 years, going and coming . As you'll see, the party does a lot of side quests as they go along and, maybe, as they come back.
I love the phrase "emotional potential energy". That's such a good phrase to use to describe how this show does what it does. Each episode is all about the strategic slow build-up and sudden release of emotional potential energy. Maybe that's why you're so nervous about reaching the destination. If they can build up this much emotional potential energy in one episode, what can they do over an entire season or several?
To be honest - i've always seen this "it'll be a mere 10 years adventure" in this scene in the end as something very sad. Like, Fern here, what, 16-ish? And you're being told that for the next ten years its already pre-predetermined what you'll be going to do? "Hi, i've decided that for the next ten years you'll be doing X :)". And Fern is like "oh...ok, i guess,"
The two stones represented breasts. It came right after Frieren pointed out how much Fern has grown, especially her chest, for her to look like Frieren’s older sister now. Frieren was momentarily self conscious about her chest thinking if it had anything to do with their diet. Obviously it’s greatly due to Fern being a human that grows old quickly compared to elves.
My guess is that she will meet Himmel and they will catch up like old friends, and then they will express certain regrets, but they will decide it's okay. What I then hope is that they will express their love for each other in a simple "I love you" to each other, and end their conversation with a smile and a "see you later." That quick goodbye at the end will make more sense to you later on.
This season only covers a little less than half of the current Manga. The story arcs get longer over time as they head north. There's far more danger and trials as they travel north. This is still a Heroes journey, it's just that Frieren didn't learn the lessons important for a Heroes journey her first trip, so she has to go on the Heroes journey again.
If you do decide to make a patreon then I wanna be your first subscriber ;). If not then thats cool too and just enjoy your reactions here ^^. (Not forcing or trying to force you, just making that clear!) Also, Eisen is such a amazing character, he doesn't say much, but he has some of the best lines in the serie.
We need a Flamme Cosplay! BUT Rest in peace Atsuko Tanaka (VA from Flamme) died after long illness 20th August. She will definitely missed and be remembered. 61 is no age.
The 1st season i think only covered the first few volumes of the manga. There is plenty of content remaining for a 2nd season. The 2nd season hasnt been confirmed but considering this series is currently the highest rated anime of all time on "MyAnimeList" means more than likely it will get another season
Unfortunately, the question isn't whether this will get another season, but rather will Madhouse and all the talented people who worked on this to make this such a masterpiece be coming back for the second season or will this go the way of One Punch Man S2?
@@annabethchase2569 trust me I've thought about the same thing. Madhouse is historically known to make one season then dip. And yes One punch man was great and received well but for some reason they didn't wanna continue it. But Frierens success is on another level so I'd hope they will continue it. But if not then another studio will pick it up. And hopefully it will be another studio that puts their heart and soul Into like madhouse

The term Frieren Friday was what we used to use when the season was ongoing and a new episode dropped every Friday.

Yeah, glad both are so invested in this show.
many reactors take week between watching same anime, it sure won't help to remember details
The first 4 episodes really measure how attentive the reactors are. That "Sour grapes" tangent is one of the best indicators of this
